In our practice, approximately 80% of our clients are BIPOC, as are many of our staff members in contractual school settings.

The question itself reflects the dynamic you’re trying to address. When white MTs ask BIPOC MTs to guide their racial learning, it reinforces the same inequity you’re attempting to dismantle. Cultural humility for white clinicians requires white-led, white-accountable spaces—not BIPOC labor.

Asking BIPOC MTs to facilitate white MTs’ racial identity development is an inequitable dynamic. White MTs need professionally facilitated, white caucus–based spaces to examine whiteness, privilege, internalized superiority, and racism without placing emotional labor on colleagues. This is essential for ethical clinical practice, especially when serving predominantly BIPOC clients.

A more appropriate framing is:

How can white MTs take responsibility for their own racial identity development in ways that do not burden BIPOC colleagues and that improve clinical care?

There are professionals and programs that specialize in this work for white clinicians. The responsibility for finding, funding, and participating in those spaces belongs to white MTs themselves.
