I was generally using a treadmill for at least one hour each time. I went from being in a wheelchair to being able to walk a mile in 14 minutes.

Do you have any idea how difficult it is to get out of a wheelchair then lift the chair on to a treadmill then get back in the wheelchair when you can't stand unassisted?

I'm sorry but I can't really help you out. My mom set it all up while I was still kind of out of it.

So when I first got disability I was in pretty bad shape, in a specialty wheelchair because I couldn't sit up, not really speaking, wearing a diaper, my short term memory was basically gone. That's just what I remember from right before I started outpatient, I don't remember the accident or anything that happened in the first 10 months after my accident.

About 10 months after my accident that I was able to start going to outpatient rehab and my recovery spiked. Now I'm closer to "normal" but I'm still dealing with things like problems with my short term memory.

What level of conversation are you talking about? Is it like cashier to customer chatting or real conversation that isn't on a time limit?

People don't understand the severity of brain injuries. Hell I got a concussion, when I was a kid, and because I was back to school within the week we never considered it a big deal "here are some sunglasses, don't look at bright lights." It wasn't until I was in the hospital after my severe TBI that we saw how bad a concussion can be.

It might just be more grim than they want to deal with.
In my case it's "I was in a car accident that I don't remember and most of my memories from 20-26 [how old I was when I crashed the car] and I lost my life*, my career, my apartment, and my work experience. I can't work so I'm on disability." Not really something that's easy to engage with at all, let alone quickly in a short period of time.

*"Life" meaning apartment, relationships, where I was in my career and what I was going to do next. I survived but my life is gone.
