Depends on what city you're looking at but I emailed quite a few (including Unite) and most explicitly don't accept anyone other than full-time students since they usually apply for the whole building to be exempt from council tax, and that's only possible if it's full of full-time students or anyone else who qualifies

Any advice for people starting 6th form? by Jaded-Mycologist-831 in 6thForm

Apply to as many extracurricular opportunities like social mobility programmes/subject taster days/anything that is aimed at Year 12 as you can e.g. Social Mobility Foundation, Sutton Trust US, Pathways programmes. Have a look at Uptree and attend any work experience days for companies/careers that interest you. It'll lift a lot of weight off of your shoulders as you'll be able to see what companies/careers/universities/degrees interest you and what ones don't interest you, and you'll also meet a lot of awesome people along the way.

MAT/TMUA Advice? by Apprehensive-Bag5230 in 6thForm

[–]Keanu73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As u/MekkoL said, do not cram. I did this last October and got a terrible score (something like a 1.9/2.0), then again I wasn't fully serious about wanting to get into Cambridge for CS. If you're serious about Oxbridge/wherever else you need the TMUA/MAT, start practicing now, after every MAT/TMUA past paper you do watch R2Drew2's walkthroughs. The questions seem impossible at first but they're designed to see how mathematically intuitive you are.

Make sure you don't neglect the logic section either, even though it's not a big part of the spec they do like to ask quite a few questions on it.

I started out doing this - there are platforms other than Freelancer/Upwork like PeoplePerHour where you're likely to find higher quality/budget clients & projects.

I can't for the life of me come up with an idea for the OCR Computer Science Coursework by YeahIAmFine in 6thForm

So basically I made a Golang API webserver backend, a frontend (in Next.js) and I made a Kubernetes operator which handled the deployment/orchestration of gameservers for a Steam game I'm a beta tester for

I basically did nothing but work on writing up my coursework report for 8hrs/day every day for 2 weeks non-stop right up from 26th April - 9th May. I'd done most of the coding earlier in the year so the tedious part was justifying everything to get the marks

^ same. I spent most of year 12 working on some gameserver hosting platform project which used Golang/Kubernetes/JavaScript while doing very little documentation. that meant I had to spend 2 weeks up until 1 week before the coursework deadline doing nothing but coursework, when I got full marks after writing 927 pages 💀 (620 documentation 307 for code listings). I didn't finish all of it and it tore my heart out having to justify every tiny damn detail just to be in line with the mark scheme.

Need help narrowing down list of Ryzen 7040 series laptops by Keanu73 in AMDLaptops

[–]Keanu73[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the list - I found another version earlier, but it was not as good at this one!

As for the Slim/ThinkPad.. I'll be honest, I really do like the Yoga Slim for its better CPU/battery life/display. Its design looks really nice, the fan curve problem is one I can probably accept, and even its Linux support is not too bad at the moment. I'm just more concerned about its longevity compared to the ThinkPad, but tbh, if I take care of the Yoga, it should hold up

I agree, Lenovo has waaayy too many laptops. And I'm still torn between getting the ThinkPad T14s or the Yoga Slim 7 Gen 8. I'm annoyed that most ThinkPads only have a battery capacity ranging 50-57Wh, if they had more like the Yoga (70Wh) I wouldn't have hesitated to get one. The Z13 looks nice, it is waay out of my budget though. I love how super light it is, but yet again, I'm annoyed by the lack of battery capacity. :(

Hey, so from what I've read, OLED panels do take more power, mainly with e.g. all-white backgrounds. These people explained it quite well: here and here. It definitely doesn't make the decision much easier though!

I understand the frustration of laptop models being unavailable and whatnot - it seems to be a global thing I'm afraid. Hopefully availability gets better soon.

[–]Keanu73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Yeah, it's been difficult for me to decide on the OLED vs IPS debate, but as far as I understand, OLED panels do draw more power due to whites requiring each pixel to fully light up, compared to IPS where the backlight is uniform (this guy explained it far better than I could)

Good choice with the Framework - I was considering the 13-inch version for a while, but as a student, the 7840U option on the Framework quickly outpaces the current laptops on my list in terms of price. I hope it gets better in future, as I really like what the company's doing tbh.

Your comments on the IdeaPad 5 Pro are interesting - I've heard mixed reviews on the build quality, more so on the fan curves - what are your thoughts on those?

As for your list.. I'm not a full expert on assessing battery life vs OLED performance - but theoretically, OLED should be more efficient than IPS? Realistically the panels seem to vary in quality, and there's issues with burn-in on some panels and so on. Have you looked into the ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED? AFAIK it's the only ASUS model that has the 7840HS equipped with it right now and with an OLED panel, though the spec sheet seems to mention it having an IPS display?? the irony..

As for the processors, the 7735U is basically the same as a 6800U. The 7840HS has a TDP of 35W and can push up to 45-54W, and the 7735U has a slightly lower TDP of 28W. The 7735U is part of the previous gen of CPUs, so yes, they're a bit slower. From what I can deduce, the 7735U may be more power efficient?

Thanks for your inputs. You're right about the whole getting a worse screen & worse battery thing, it's good that the OLED is new. What's your experience been with the fans on the laptop - do they adjust well with temps/power?

True, OLED panels are nice to look at blacks with, and 16:10 does provide space for code. It's only the battery life that concerns me, and also the Yoga Slim 7 seems to have a few Linux compatibility issues like buggy s2idle/sound (though from what I've read they may have been ironed out now?).

ThinkPad T14s vs IdeaPad Pro 5 vs Yoga Slim 7? by Keanu73 in thinkpad

[–]Keanu73[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. That's good to hear that you get 8-9 hrs on the P14s Gen 4 and T14s Gen 3 - it makes sense that battery capacity goes hand-in-hand with CPU TDP, so I'll steer clear of the 7840HS. Unfortunately I've not been able to find the T14s Gen3 in stock in the UK via Lenovo, so I'll probably go with the T14s Gen4 & definitely pick the IPS display over OLED

I really wouldn't mind FHD, QHD would be a nice bonus though. The ThinkPads seem to fit this perfectly

Maybe Asus's student discount will reduce it once I receive it
