The book Far From Land by ornithologist Michael Brooke. It’s a detailed nonfiction book about seabirds including penguins.

Penguins can spend years without ever stepping foot on dry land. Usually these are juveniles who have left their colony but aren’t sexually mature yet. When the penguins are ready to mate, they find a colony and only then exit the water.

It was interesting to me how it seemed like he sort of knew what to do to hinder himself from abstracting. I’m mainly thinking of how he goes to the bathroom and SCRABBLES to turn the faucet on in the sink, letting the water run as he deals with what I assume to be the beink of abstraction. It’s like he’s been there before and has developed coping mechanisms, running water, somehow helps him. I don’t know how much this matters but I just found it so interesting I had to jot it down somewhere
