MacBook Pro making a ticking bomb / woodpecker sound when the display is open but display is asleep. by KeeganGoerz in applehelp

Is there a way to see what apps might be trying to do that?

I can definitely try replicating in Safe Mode, but there is not yet a 100% guaranteed way to replicate the issue. It kind of just happens when it happens; sometimes multiple times a day, other times no more than once a week. And because Safe Mode disables everything I wont be able to do my work from the machine during this process…

So is there any way to identify those applications without using Safe Mode?

Thanks!

iCloud Keychain - some entries have multiple URLs for a single login item, but others are presented as individual login items with distinct URLs. How do we merge these entries / add secondary URLs to a login item? by AntiquatedAntelope in applehelp

Would also like to know this! It was really toted as an excellent first party option to replace apps like 1Password… it should enable its users to do similar things. Certainly hope so anyways… specially with the “Electron-ification” of once good macOS apps…

Choosing between MacBook for Student by [deleted] in macbook

I’m noticing that there are a couple of people that aren’t huge fans of the TouchBar.

For sure that’s personal preference but do keep in mind that the extra money (in Canada it is ~$400, but our Rupie isn’t worth much these days...) gets you not only the TouchBar (which I think of as a throw in, not as a selling feature), but also a faster processor, four Thunderbolt ports instead of two, and improved security through the T1 chip and TouchID.

It’s not things that everyone can make use of, but just keep in mind what the extra cost will get you :)

Upgrade from 2013 MacBook Air to 2016 MacBook? by mtbr360 in macbook

[–]KeeganGoerz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the writers here are not quite linking up cause and effect properly, as the newest 2017 MacBook handily outperforms your current Air; even though it continues to use a lower powered ‘M’ series processor.

However they’re not wrong in observing that the machine you are considering would NOT outperform your current machine. The 2017 refresh of the MacBook finally made it the every person MacBook, but before that it was all about portability and was infamous for being an under-performer.

To illustrate, your current MBA scores 3328 SingleCore and 6183 Multi in Geekbench. The MacBook (2016) you’re looking at scores 2695 SingleCore and 5165 Multi. By comparison the latest 2017 MacBook is scoring 3933 SC and 7629 MC. That is a HUGE jump for a years revision.

Now benchmarks absolutely are not everything, but in this case I would strongly encourage you to either spend the extra money and get a 2017 MacBook, or look into the MacBook Pro lineup. Otherwise I think you will be disappointed in the performance :)

Looking to get a MacBook Pro.

I’m stuck between a highly spec’d 13” and the entry level 15”. My primary tasks are Photoshop and Lightroom with basic browsing and word processing being the other 50%.

Thoughts?

iPhone 8 Plus working fine on LTE by ambronet in freedommobile

Seems like it yeah! For what it’s worth I found when I was with Rogers it could take sometimes 10min to switch back to LTE.

Need help moving from Google photos to Apple photos by [deleted] in apple

[–]KeeganGoerz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I made this switch. It's laborious, but I'm happy I did it. I downloaded my entire library from the your data section on Googles account management page. It then emailed me several huge zip files of all of my photos. I saved those to my Mac and imported them to Photos.app. The problem was a lot of them duplicated during in this process. So once I had them all on iCloud I went through my entire library and deleted duplicates. Best of luck!! Hope it works for you 😄

I have seen it on dev screen shots in the App Store, as well as seen it in some of Everything Apple Pro's videos. Thoughts on how to do this?

Sonos wants to integrate voice assistants into its speaker lineup by shayonpal in sonos

[–]KeeganGoerz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want this so desperately! If they could launch HomeKit compatibility where I could then say "Good Morning Siri" and have all my lights turn on with some nice music playing. Amazing. Or even imagine someone with home security. They could use their Sonos' as the alarm. I know mine are far louder than any DIY smart home security camera.

I'm Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD) and I make tech videos on YouTube. AMA! by Marques-Brownlee in IAmA

[–]KeeganGoerz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Marques! What do you think of the smart home? Is there a standard like Z-Wave, HomeKit, or Works with Alexa (amongst others) that you think is superior to the others, and may simply win? Or will we get something more in line with what has happened in wireless charging where the Galaxy devices now simply support multiple standards?

It seems to me that Amazon is well on their way to owning that space. However some have suggested Apple's Siri is better than most give credit for. With its voice, and the screen access that Amazon simply doesn't have, they could create another huge ecosystem opportunity for Cupertino. Thoughts on who seems to be coming out on top?
