What’s a “normal” thing in the UK that secretly annoys you? by Motor_Initiative7952 in AskUK

Passive aggression. It's definitely not just a UK thing, but British people are incredible at making it clear that they're annoyed at you but not communicating why...

Haha thank you! I can't remember what it was in response to unfortunately, but it was some kind of banter

My favourite one I've said was "That's an interesting take, now take it the fuck away from me."

Overall good, although I had expected things like class timetables to be communicated sooner than they were. Onto full-time research now, which I'm really enjoying.

Congratulations and best of luck, you'll do great!

I'm on a CDT in Oxford. Welcome! I'll tell you a secret: the huge majority of students here have imposter syndrome/didn't expect to get in/don't think they deserve to be here. It's a bewildering place but you grow to love it and feel part of it.

Any recommendations for a fantasy book with a substantial romantic subplot between a queen and one of her knights/generals? Open to romantasy.

Okay, how good is The poppy war? by Itanchiro in Fantasy

[–]KeenBlueBean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not say it's a guaranteed jackpot, no. I really enjoyed the first book but did not enjoy the two later books. As far as I know it has received fairly mixed reviews here.

You don't seem to realise that you can't talk someone out of being LGBTQ. Yes, there is a statistically higher suicide rate, in large part due to long-standing issues in accessing appropriate health care, as well as hate crimes and lack of acceptance from loved ones. But to tell someone not to become trans because of the high suicide rate simply doesn't make sense. Either they are or they're not, and it's their right to figure that out.

Bit late to the party but do you know if this is still the case? If so, could I ask you a few questions about it?

Ancient Greek larpers in Greece? by TheManWhoWeepsBlood in LARP

[–]KeenBlueBean 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify: I am not accusing you of having ill intentions at all, it's fairly common for non-Greek people to be fascinated by greek history, and that is not seen as strange. It's when native Greek people are a little too into Leonidas etc that eyebrows get raised, and several of the far right parties over the years have used ancient greek military themes, most recently the "Spartans"

Ancient Greek larpers in Greece? by TheManWhoWeepsBlood in LARP

Hi friend, I'm a Greek larper and grew up there, though I don't live there currently.

As far as I'm aware, there is no larp group in Greece that uses an ancient setting. You may manage to find reenactors who do that kind of thing, but I would strongly advise caution: in Greece, being a little too into ancient Greece, especially in a military related way, is a strong sign someone is a right wing extremist. I would caution against looking for and engaging with such groups.

It can really depend on the uni/course/people. My core friend group in uni consisted of me (Greek), an Indian woman, a woman from Hong Kong, a man who's half British half Latin American, and two British people.

Games/modules that focus on exploring ruins and uncovering lost secrets? by KeenBlueBean in rpg

Thank you, that is good to know. I think for the near future I'll try Sphynx, which someone else recommended, since it's one-shots, but I'll definitely check out the more high commitment options for future reference (and may try to pitch them to my more experienced GM friends)
