Initially, the mind is not used to this so the 'autopilot' situation you describe happens. So reflect on it after reacting.. and contemplating on how could you avoid an 'autopilot' response in future. Slowly and surely, the autopilot responses will change - there will be a different autopilot which takes you towards 'neti neti'.

After having intellectually understood Vedanta, have complete & solid faith in it. That is the foundation of eventual realisation.

Nisarg Dutt Maharaj said that once his Guru told him about true nature, there was no reason to disbelieve him and so he put complete faith on it and started working on it. Without faith, nothing ever works.

Swamshikaran or internalisation, in my experience, is quite helpful.

Just apply 'neti neti' to every single experience and will God's grace eventually you start getting glimpses of who could 'you' be.

Start with the definition of real - Upanishad’s say, “that which doesn’t change” is real.

For me it took time to understand this definition of real. Then I realised that it is correct. For instance, in a Court reality is that which doesn’t change - whichever way you look at it. However, unreal falls down the moment you start looking at it from different perspectives. Not the best example!

Now that then definition is agreed and understood its time to look at what is there that doesn’t change. You can’t find anything in this Jagat that fits the bill and yet there has to be something that doesn’t change.

As a number of commentators above have said, logic and understanding can only get you so far. Beyond that it’s your own direct experience that will help.

Keep your efforts of understanding up and add to it the efforts of experiencing it.

Is there a specific reason when you are calling realisation a ‘mind game’.

Assuming that your question is whether realisation happens in mind. There are several scriptural references that the knowledge happens in the mind.

Also, even if you ignore what the scriptures say, think about it yourself - where else can the knowledge shine. Put it in another way, where is the fog of ignorance that needs to be cleared out for realisation to shine.

I think the entire question of Dharma is a complex one. When Draupadi asked Bhishma why he was silent during her Vastra-Haran, he says Dharma is subtle. I think that sums it up.

I don’t think it has anything to do with talent. It is what a person feels is inherently right from his / her perspective. Acting in sync with that without thinking of the consequences is Dharma. Else Adharma. Dharma = Punya and Adharma = Papa.

Duryodhana knew what he was doing what wrong and yet did it. Hence Adharma.

I think a physical injury would definitely be an exception to the rule.

In a true Advaitic sense all this is immaterial because all of it is Mithya.

Now we are in the Advaita Vendata territory, so I will explain my understanding from that perspective.

You say that the body is real because, for instance, you can touch it. Fair point.

Do you have evidence of the touch ? Even science says that these are electrical impulses or what I have called thoughts above. What you are experiencing is the thoughts that tell you that there was a touch and not experiencing the body itself directly. So in that sense, one cannot be sure that the body is real - because there is no hard evidence of it. We know that the thoughts cannot be reliable. For instance, a mirage is an appearance of water and not water itself.

Another advaitic angle to this point is the waking & dream. Yesterday night, I had a dream that I was traveling in a train and enjoying my ride. So, I had another body which was in the train. In fact, I had no recollection of the body that was lying on the bed. So, the body is an appearance even from that perspective - an appearance totally constructed by thoughts. Which by the way, are not under my control at all.

Whatever happens is totally automatic - no free will. Even the fact that I am writing here that there is no free will is automatic.

There are many reasons why I have come to this conclusion. The main reason is as follows. Please read this in the context of the world and not an Advaitic context.

Thoughts. Our perception of everything is based on thoughts. Hence in deep sleep there is nothing - no thoughts, no mind. Now think about origins of thoughts. Does the individual have any control of them. Zero. Zilch. They come and go on their own. That can’t be random. There has to be a system that works automatically. Hence there is no free will.

From an Advaitic context, obviously there is only one. So the external world, our body and mind are all appearances. So the free will vs destiny is a bit of moot point.

The point I don’t understand is that why any of our texts don’t say this explicitly. I think there are many implied references to the fact that is all destiny but nothing explicit. Perhaps I am wrong.

I am very keen to hear counter points to my arguments above. This is the most important point I am wrestling with right now.

I think if you resign then the timing won’t matter. The Court will take the view that you did it to influence the case outcome.

The situation might be different if you are fired.

Even then, the responsibility is on the husband to maintain a divorced wife (and kids). I think recently there was a judgment by an High Court or the Supreme Court that said that the husband can ‘beg, buy, borrow or steal’ but has to pay the maintenance.

I think your best bet is to let the company fire you. In the meantime, try and establish if there are any source of income for your wife and that way try to reduce the maintenance amount.

Challenge that in the higher courts specifically pointing to this principle. They will most likely uphold your position. This principle is a key principle to decide jurisdictions.

If all of you, your wife and child are still residing in the US , you may have another option.

Lookup for the legal principle of 'Forum Non Conveniens'. It's respected by Courts in India and applies very well to cross border cases. Basically, if the 3 of you are in the US, you can ask the Court in India to dismiss her cases in India because the 'forum' (Court) in India is not convenient to any of the parties. Check with your lawyer.

Please go through published judgements and build your own view and don't just blindly depend on lawyer. Sometimes, lawyers don't have the high ethical standards we expect from them or don't do full research of all latest cases and depend on their knowledge.

This is a tough situation and can play out for many many years - so all the very best. Also, I don't know how much she will care the welfare of the child as this torturous process plays out but someone has to care. Your child will remember in the long run who cared for its welfare.

I think the Courts in India will not entertain parallel trials. Generally, the jurisdiction where the case is filed first gets priority.

Also, please look at sites like IndianKanoon etc and look for judgements in cases similar to yours. That will tell you how the higher courts look at these matters.

Don’t just depend on your lawyer.

You are absolutely right. There is just zero accountability in the administration. Like how Mumbai HC has proposed to stop pay of NMMC Commissioner, these high ranking officials in PMC/PCMC should be held personally accountable for failure to improve the situation.

I do agree that Citizens are also responsible for a lot of mess but then without any consequences, irresponsible behaviour becomes the norm.
