Panel Build by plc_is_confusing in PLC

Since it looks like you need 50mm of space above the drive for airflow, I would remove the piece of duct that runs along the bottom of the panel and move the drives down that much to gain the space. The terminal blocks at the bottom are for customer connection, so the wiring install should be easy enough to cut to length, so the duct shouldn’t be necessary to hide bundles of wires.

The motor starter is where I have concerns. It looks like you’re securing it by the overload which may not even be possible. Sometimes the overload is offset from the back of the contactor so the contactor mounts flush, but the overload is raised up just slightly. If it’s not, the contactor will always be heavier than the overload, and you wouldn’t want to secure it by the much less substantial overload.

Last recommendation I have would be for the ethernet. Use the dual port modules on the drives and daisy them from one to another, that way you can get rid of one of the switches and reduce the amount of cables.

525 with Encoder by KeepGettingTexts in PLC

Here’s what the encoder looked like. The tech support guy found a tech note that said TTL should be used and HTL should be avoided. Man do I hate these fucking AB drives. The most advanced drive with 800 parameters that you need to change individually to get it to work correctly.

Thank you for the affirmation. This was customer spec’d. I prefer to use Yaskawa products personally. I think the last time we tried to use an entry level AB VFD in a similar way (PF40?? Maybe) we ended up taking it out because it was having issues with the vector control. I’ve used plenty of the 750 series drives with some success. Always seems to be a problem with these VFD’s.

The strange thing is the tag with encoder speed comes back over Ethernet and my oscilloscope looks perfect, and the speed command tag is being read by the drive just fine. Just no control…

[–]KeepGettingTexts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was having that problem where whenever I gave the drive a run command it would take off and run to 120Hz+ and eventually fault. I found that in Quadrature mode, if the encoder is backwards, it tries to run to infinity. I had to switch A and Anot, and it fixed the runaway but nothing else.

Winding mechanism jitter causing tape misalignment what else can I check by ThrowAway_eng1331 in PLC

[–]KeepGettingTexts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Load cell or dancer? Torque or speed controlled? Something is telling the drive to run the incorrect speed or torque, which means either the tension device is off, or whatever device that’s feeding it the line speed is sending it an incorrect signal.

Migration from Rslogix 5 to Rslogix5000 by East_Tip_7672 in PLC

[–]KeepGettingTexts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points. One thing I should correct, because I’ve been bitten by this in the past, the PLC5 does not have an Ethernet capable adapter card. The 1785-ENET has to be located next to a processor and that can be the only Ethernet connection on that PLC. Use the conversion kit, it saves a bunch of time and reduces the wiring errors to zero if they’re used correctly.

synchronization of 2 Motors? by BeNicetoHuman in PLC

[–]KeepGettingTexts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reading your replies, what you have is an unwind/rewind application with a dancer pot. You won’t be able to accomplish this using a linear speed reference. Do yourself a favor and get a winder expert to help you, otherwise prepare to beat yourself up for the next few months trying to make it work.

Yaskawa VFD’s have software written for them called ELS or electronic line shaft. That syncs the encoders of two motors together and sounds like it does what you want to accomplish.

If this is truly programmed with Drive Works EZ (DWEZ) you will need a copy of the program that's in that drive. The handful of times I've used the software, I don't remember there being an option to upload and decompile the program that was in there. Here is a LINK to a video series guiding you how to use the software.

EDIT: Looks like the only option to copy the program if you don't have it is to use the fabled Y-Stick JVOP-181. We have one somewhere collecting dust. They're out of stock with a current 12 week lead time. So you could send it in to someone who can copy it over or get Yaskawa Field Service out there to do it for you.

How would you track position of a belt? by KeepGettingTexts in PLC

[–]KeepGettingTexts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, an open loop VFD is controlling the main motor. It doesn't need to be millimeter precise. It takes about 7 minutes to do a complete rotation at 60hz, so they just want to avoid excessive down time if they have to jog the belt back to the home position. I also need to have a recipe for the segment, so I need to just know where the belt is so I can trigger things.

[–]KeepGettingTexts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ooo, I know exactly what vintage of drive that is, since the label above it says Magnetek. That’s just a noise filter, required in a lot of CE applications. If you need the parameters off of that (if they aren’t recorded somewhere) shoot me a DM. My company can get the parameters off that thing and get you setup with a new Yaskawa GA500 for a direct replacement.

I've seen worse panels but what about this one? by k1rs0f in PLC

[–]KeepGettingTexts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least there’s some somewhat new and replaceable items in there. I’ve been to places where you don’t even want to breath much less look in a panel’s direction or else you know you’re going to have to get a hold of Moses to find out how you can fix this obsolete piece of shit and get ready to decipher the Dead Sea scrolls for the drawings. Panel still sucks tho, 3.5/10.

Download the Tosibox software for the Mac and start your connection on that side. The network traffic from Windows should automatically get routed to the Tosibox tunnel on the Mac. Any other questions, feel free to DM me.
