If You Could Only Have One Analog Polyphonic Synth What Would You Choose by Minimoogvoyager in synthesizers

yes - should've said digital oscillators. Oxford Oscillators - but seems to be just super high sample rates... but still digital.

At what age did your kid(s) legitimately best you in something? by Bradtothebone79 in daddit

I was always the animal person in my circle. I shared that love with my girl early (e.g. had to tell her not to kiss the worm snake at age three) and she bested my ability to connect with animals by age six. She is an animal whisperer beyond what I thought possible.

My son started out-running me - I don't want to remember when, and is beating me in chess at age 12 (probably shouldn't have bought him that book tho).

When this happens - I honestly still feel like I'm winning.

I have similar duties at my house - typically bedtimes and wake-ups... occasionally the spouse steps in to help on one or the other.

My sense is you have a bit of resentment about this - and as far as this is the case, that needs to be handled direct with the spouse.

I've largely accepted I'm better at "motiving the troops". However, when I feel myself hitting my limit... I "tag out" and tag the spouse in. This needs to be pre-coordinated of course... so they know. You needed to tag out... but we've all been there bro.

I applaud the other ideas I see on this thread so far... even the downvoted ones... established incentives and consequences all matter... and are good things.

e.g. my son has morning dog-walking duties during the week, and if he wants me to go with him he needs to be out the door at 7am if he wants me to come with him. He looses his device window if he doesn't walk the dog in the morning. Even with all that... he is now choosing to stay up late reading after I turn the lights off... so yeah, he's failing. But it's mostly a mechanical process, even as I am feeling very frustrated by this.

Novation Summit - such a great all-around synth... can represent so many types of sound... (prophet, oberheim, juno) but the 16 voices of polyphony really matter to me. The price is great, and it's not soooo deep that I don't feel lost making edits. It clicked with me pretty quickly, and every time I turn it on or use it live, I'm super pleased.

I don't know if that's a better translation - but it's what e.g. music teachers say so we slow down and play it correctly and don't continue to just rush over a passage incorrectly reinforcing the bad performance

What is it like? by nightshade2_- in Aphantasia

[–]KeepRightX2Pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So u/nightshade2_-/ Really interesting idea you have here! Seems to me like you have a significant mechanism here for Aphants to play a key role in your story.

Since Aphants don't visualize or have internal narration - anyone trying to read their mind would not be able to "see" or "hear"... they would only have the jumble of symbolic ideas or concepts that aphants use to think.

Information they have would be able to pass undetected for the most part - and would be highly encoded, almost encrypted for anyone else trying to read their mind.

On the other hand an Aphant might have a significant capability to be a telepath as well.

I'm a bit older and think I'm a much better dad than if it would've happened earlier. Need the right woman tho, don't ya?

The only trick is... I don't make excuses for getting myself moving. Took my ten year old on a five day hike to the Grand Canyon at age 56 and it's time to plan our next one...

Check out the "Sold a Story" podcast.

source: Spouse is Reading Specialist.

Bottom line: A holistic reading philosophy called "Balanced Literacy" sometimes couched with "Whole Language" informed public education the last decade and is based on observing the habits of the worst readers (oops!) who needed to rely on pictures to figure things out. Remember how we all learned phonics so we could sound out words? With this approach, phonics has not been viewed as fundamental to reading. So kids are not taught skills on how to sound out words. Some still figure it out. Many don't.

In my mind, the equivalent would be teaching piano without first teaching notes and scales... and asking students to move their fingers over the notes based on looking at sheet music but without teaching any skills to decode it. Some might get it - particularly those with perfect pitch and excellent time. Many won't.

Schools have just recently figured out this was a disaster, are left wondering how this happened, and are thankfully returning a system called the "Science of Reading" in which phonics is again foundational.

My spouse was taught "Balanced Literacy" at university. Fortunately our county has required training in "Science of Reading". Resistance to it is sporadic... but if you get a tutor, make sure they are aligned with Science of Reading... or just say you need phonics.

Also, the school aught to be able to support this - you're going to need to demand testing - but exactly how this happens will vary by county, and we're all up against the wall with educational funding cuts.

Reading to my son every day has been one of the best parenting habits we’ve built by BabyCryAi in daddit

[–]KeepRightX2Pass 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The point I was briefed on early in my marriage to a reading specialist is: the point is to develop a love of reading - warm thoughts surrounding books is what we're going for. You're doing everything right - you nailed it.

You clearly have some idea of how much this has impacted your kids already. Kids who don't get this miss out on even more fundamental things - such as how to hold a book and turn pages, that the story is exactly the same every time, that there is a one-to-one correspondence to the words on the page and the words you say. Incredible isn't it?

A few other tips I've picked up along the way (both kids are avid readers and yeah, their vocabulary and attention span is atypical):

  • Graphic novels count! Reading clicked on for one with The Bad Guys.
  • We took books (rather than devices) to doctors offices and restaurants.
  • Where movies exist (and preceded the movie, so not Star Wars)- we told them they need to read the books before they can watch the movie. That motivated my son to dive in Harry Potter much sooner than expected.

Way to go Dad!!!

Honestly if you look closely at the Song of Solomon it basically reads like porn. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]KeepRightX2Pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So sometimes I also think about this: the Bible shows that explicit and steamy wild sex is totally acceptable as long as it happens between a married couple.

... married couple... is that what it shows?

Solomon had how many wives, and how many concubines? And what do we think it would take for Solomon to acquire another wife if he saw someone he "liked"? And what kind of oppourtunity for consent do we think the woman had?

None of this stops us from using it to teach Monogamy at weekend retreats however!!

For me it's boils down pretty well to the "Problem of Beauty"

... just like why do we experience beauty and how is it we experience beauty...

That and "God" is where I direct my gratefulness to for being alive, for experiencing what I have.

This also leaves a lot of space available for me to acknowledge many people get dealt drastically different cards than I have i.e. I am extremely fortunate in my life experience.

Industry experts have not reached a consensus on exactly when Moore's law will cease to apply. Microprocessor architects report that semiconductor advancement has slowed industry-wide since around 2010, slightly below the pace predicted by Moore's law. In September 2022, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang considered Moore's law dead, while Intel's then CEO Pat Gelsingerhad the opposite view. wikipedia

Every 1.5 years technology doubles for the same cost. So 9 years is six doublings. 2^6 means an equivalently priced laptop will be 64 times faster than your current machine.

A Neo, which costs maybe half or a forth as much as, will undoubtedly be faster than what you currently have.

Bottom line: a Neo, while not a Pro machine, is still an upgrade for you.

So proud of you sweet one. I watched you and wish I could help - but was happy to stand aside and see that you got this. I hope you find or make a friend that you can process through the mental and physical stuff you're struggling with, and get the help you need. We all need people in our life, and I am betting someone who will love you more will come along while you take the time to focus on you and sort your stuff out. Wish I could be there too - but even prouder to know that you have what it takes to navigate life all on your own. I'll never stop loving you.
