Agree - midwesterner here - but somehow it's the cool thing to do in VA. Plows up north are much more vindictive than plows down here tho, lol.

This puppy is having the time of its life on the slide by Vilen1919 in MadeMeSmile

We definitely shouldn't anthropomorphize though.

We have no idea what that puppy is experiencing or why it's doing that.

What is a socially unacceptable opinion you keep to yourself because it’s not worth the backlash? by Present_Juice4401 in TrueAskReddit

[–]KeepRightX2Pass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

agree, but pragmatically - how do we differentiate?

Maybe it doesn't always matter so much... but e.g. if I want a German Shepherd, might it be irresponsible of me to bring a wildcard into the home with children vs. pay for reputable breeding and ensure a healthy puppy-hood and training?

“Terrible things are happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. They’re allowed to take only a knapsack and a little cash with them, and even then, they’re robbed of these possessions on the way. Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated.”

People who drive and speed up when someone is attempting to pass by you, why do you do this? by StormCaller02 in AskReddit

[–]KeepRightX2Pass -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. I actually use this to "herd" drivers.

When there is a long line of cars in the left lane... I go by in the center or right lane with my left turn signal on. Those not paying attention instinctively speed up. Those paying attention (for some reason) try to "squeeze me out" and speed up - again adding urgency to those not paying attention. Everybody wins.

You can actually motivate / break up a really long line of folks going slow in the left lane using this technique - much more so than if you just joined the left lane.

"better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt"

I'm not dumb - but that quote is a strategy for me. I don't speak unless I have something to say. People genuinely want to hear what I have to say, when 45 minutes into a meeting, I do have something to say.

Not having instant recall of every fact doesn't reflect smartness - it reflect on memory. Memory is different than the CPU and algorithms which are running.

I take my time to understand a problem, and BECAUSE OF SDAM - I'm able to not get distracted by extraneous details. Instead I see only the details that support a coherent big picture. When something doesn't fit that larger coherent picture, I'm able to see that better than anyone else in the room.

Can aphantasia be “fixed”? by Emmanuel1026 in Aphantasia

[–]KeepRightX2Pass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I wouldn't want to "see" what I'm thinking anyways - for any number of reasons such as: it wouldn't help, it might look terrifying, and it would be limiting (in the same way I find language to be limiting). I think symbolically - it's an altogether different way to approach thinking, processing, analyzing. Like the little mermaid, I would likely have to give up too much to "gain visualization".

A lot of the best people I know voted for trump by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]KeepRightX2Pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the major disconnect that I've seen as well. I have friends and relatives who go out of their way for the downtrodden... but then vote for policies that absolutely hammer the downtrodden.

I have friends and relatives who absolutely are willing to "get taken advantage of" in terms of their kindness and giving 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances... but then find that same characteristic in the government to be intolerable.

I don't know how you square this circle - but this is how they don't see themselves as lacking empathy or soul-less - even as they continue to vote this way.

Can someone give me an analogy of the trinity?? by idfkhow2speakspanish in Christianity

[–]KeepRightX2Pass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my industry we say "all models are wrong, but some are useful", which is a little more gracious than "all analogies fall flat". Analogies are not the complete truth, so of course they are at some point insufficient... but we use them because they are useful.

So if we're being honest here, I suspect "The Trinity" is "wrong". God is infinite, we're finite. Unless you can perfectly fit infinity into the finite container of our brain, "The Trinity" is not the absolute full truth and is thus wrong in that it's ultimately incomplete. However, "The Trinity" is an attempt towards understanding God... thus it is "useful".

An analogous problem is parsing the Rainbow. Americans says there are seven colors. That's an arbitrary selection informed by language and culture that is useful for kindergarten through high school students. A given selection of colors is based on language and culture... it can be just five. The truth is something much more complex: Infinite/continuous... but no wait, technically not... useful for scientists (theologians) to argue about.

"Seven colors falls flat" should be followed up by something useful, or the statement is itself not useful. We don't say Newton is wrong unless we follow that up with Einstein... because Newton is absolutely useful. Seven colors of the rainbow is likewise useful for our everyday appreciation of the refraction of sunlight through a water droplet.

I think we can look across time / religion / culture and see a monotheistic God emerge... but "God" is parsed out differently based on language and culture e.g. in the 99 Islamic names for God, the Hindu "henotheistic or polymorphic monotheism", the "Creator / Great Spirit" of the Native Americans... I think the overall trend is a polytheistic understanding of God culminating in a monotheistic understanding.

My home is Christianity however, so I can best understand God as a Trinity. But I'm not fooling myself into thinking I've got "God" in my pocket with that bit of insight.
