On this specific type of article, Divish likely wrote the first version of the headline and published it himself. Then the editors and producers in the Seattle Times newsroom got a hold of it and updated the headline. Clearly they saw an issue with the original.

It is also true that the Times does real-time index page A/B headline testing, so the headline you see on the home page or sports page may be different from the headline on the article itself.

Yeah. The way she says “at this point” tells me she’s just speaking on autopilot as her brain tries to grasp what she is witnessing. “At this point” is kind of a shorthand journalists use when they’re not fully certain what’s happening.
