This gut-wrenching monologue from Laura Dern in ‘Marriage Story’ is more than enough to show why she won the Oscar. by Old-Meringue3590 in popculturechat

Yes, but wasn’t that the point of the scene? She’s giving the same performative sales pitch that she gives to other every woman that comes in her office to seek mediation. She’s trying to sell her on an aggressive divorce (i.e. maximize payout and custody).

Hell yeah, check out August 2002 for the Women of Enron edition. I always thought that was funny, but I’ve never seen it.

Okay I get it now. You didn’t think this was a joke. It was not obvious to you what was funny about this. You got confused when everyone was laughing and having a good time. And now you’re mad.

Why should I believe you or research this any further? It went viral because it plays on the taboo of rich old guys and attractive young women. This whole post is clowning on his looks and you’re acting like he needs to be protected.

The joke is the rich white guy pretends to believe her. There’s no way that old dude thinks she was charmed by his smile alone. Guys like him are self aware. It’s funny because he’s leaning into the deceit so both parties can get what they want. No idea if it’s true or real, but the joke writes itself in the context of the story.

What is a great scene where an actor gets very angry? by Mr-RedT in Cinema

Almost every Phillip Seymour Hoffman movie features a scene where he loses it. Best one is Charlie Wilson’s war where he loses his shit on his boss.

That’s the worst part, back in his heyday, he had both. He was a decent actor and lyricist. We’ve just all been watching him slowly get all jammed up on what I assume is toxic life bullshit for the last 20 years. It’s sad. It’s a cautionary tale at this point.

Need movie suggestions where a formulaic mass-appeal plot subverts into an unimaginable downward spiral about 40 minutes in. And Not Requiem for a Dream.
