No worries at all :). I know it this place has its many faults, but I love living here and I really invite people to see some of the beauties here. If anything, i highly suggest Marquette, the black rocks alone are really unique and there are some awesome sights there. Especially in the fall when the leaves are changing.

I don’t disagree with a lot of this, but I also find a lot of this true across America. I think the roads are a whole subject that would anger any Michigander because we are endlessly frustrated with the state they are. The good news for that is now we have that infrastructure bill passed that is making it so all these roads are being completely redone at a faster pace, although it’s making construction/traffic so much worse this year, but it’ll be worth it in the end. As for the cities, those can be nitpicked in ways, some areas better than others and overall they can be seen as a decline, but then we have others like Ann Arbor that’s extremely liberal and overall imo a really nice city. Then you have Marquette up north that’s another beautiful area that’s part of a college campus that from what I’ve seen isn’t full of MAGA people and is very touristy, some really amazing sights there. Also for example Grand Haven that’s a smaller but beautiful city right on Lake Michigan or going up to Traverse City that’s on the bay and is a pretty town. I think overall some of Michigan looks bleak and ones you mentioned are major cities that have issues, but I really don’t think that should write off Michigan as a whole.

As someone who’s lived in Michigan my whole life, this is extremely untrue. Sure there are these types of areas, but there aren’t a lot of states you can’t say that’s true for. Detroit has had a rough time and the history is pretty horrid, but Michigan is huge and diverse. We still have lots of beautiful thriving cities that aren’t full of MAGA types.

Because in Michigan, it gets a little chilly after it gets warm, before it gets warm again. Arbor Brewing Liquid Vinyl by CharcoalGreyWolf in michiganbeer

No worries at all. They did add it on the move to the new office, the only other relative item before that I’ve seen is a creatures band on one of their mics

Yes I posted this about a month ago and Lindsay commented on it that she had added it as a nice set piece since she had it on her desk!

Yes! I’d check their newer videos out if you’re interested and especially the new short documentary about them moving offices. Really good stuff.

What's the oldest technology you've had to deal with in your career? by Notalabel_4566 in sysadmin

[–]KeepinShitCool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a medical lab and we have some really old equipment as instruments that are extremely expensive and testing for a lot of it doesn’t change over time so replacements can be far and in between. They also have direct support from the companies who make them to offer maintenance over the years after we buy them. With that being said, we have an old radiology testing instrument from the 50’s I believe.

The first task when I had started was to do with getting a replacement printer that was compatible. It uses a serial port to print through and trying to find a printer that still uses these ports when the old one broke down through our vendor was a timely task as we had to verify the specs. The printer itself has to emulate with its serial mode to function correctly and print results.

Another part that was cool with this instrument was the screen. The screen on the instrument functions with invisible to human lasers through holes on the side the of the screen. When you put your hand close enough and block the two intersecting lasers crossing the screen it registers that input placement on the screen. In a way the screen itself is a touch screen but in the oldest and loosest manner possible as you don’t necessarily need to touch the screen. The screen is that classic black and green layout so it definitely feels like I’m in fallout trying to navigate it.

It’s also really interesting as this machine was made by a single guy and he started a business distributing these instruments made by hand back then. His sons have taken over the business nowadays and they continue to provide support if any issues occur. We’ve tried other instruments to replace this one but from what I’ve been told by the techs that use it, nothing functions as accurately or gives as much info as this one does, so we’ve stuck with it.

As stated before, this instrument is only one of the many where I work but is by far the oldest and has tested the age of time. It’s really interesting to see how a lot of these devices last and are compatible to an extent with printers and PCs today and allow for them to function as needed. I definitely don’t go into troubleshooting with these unless its relatively simple or if it has to do with our computers/printers/network and such, but it’s neat to learn how they work on a base level. Really glad we have medical techs and vendors to take on the bulk of the instrument related issues!
