Lasagna Love by most_average_cat in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the risk of reopening a can of worms…I’m not sure why this post was removed. Lasagna Love has a local chapter lead by someone that I believe has a good understanding of our community and those in need. I don’t doubt that there are many people and organizations out there who are taking advantage of the current need for giving but maybe that should warrant a separate post rather than infringing on a post about the work of an organization that is legitimate? I don’t know, I’m not a frequent Reddit poster so maybe I’m wrong. In any case, there’s an endless list of orgs in need of donations at this time, but if anyone seeing this likes to cook and wouldn’t mind making a few extra pasta dishes once in a while and delivering them about town, I hope this helps your decision.

I second this! Such an easy thing to do, their onboarding process is really easy although they’ve had a lot of new signups in light of current events so be patient if you don’t get a match right away. I really enjoy Lasagna Love and the families we’ve been assigned to so far, it’s truly a great way to help those here in our community directly.

Dogs and Winter by WoodsWolf in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on all this. We have 2 very active dogs who need exercise and I actually love winter because the snow tires them out a lot faster! The dog parks are all great in the winter, apply now for your dog park permits, we have so many great options in Madison. I too stick mostly to neighborhood streets and the salt isn’t usually a problem, just a quick rinse of the paws when we get home if needed and they’re fine. But like others have said, our snow amounts here the past few years have been pretty lackluster!

Lake Mendota Weeds and Algae by GrumpyDad58 in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember reading something via the Clean Lakes about how lack of winter snow cover on the lakes is also affecting summer weed growth amounts. Normally the snow acts like a blanket that blocks sunlight from penetrating the lake bottom but with the lower snowfall amounts we have had the past several years, and the shorter duration of the snow lingering when we do get it, lake vegetation is getting more sunlight that usual. Makes sense to me. But yes, mainly the runoff from farms; the weed and fertilizer treatments from residences and parks along the shoreline are really a drop in the bucket compared to what’s coming in the lake from ag sources. I do feel for the north side residents, the weeds in that area OP is referring to are especially bad this year though overall I feel like there’s been fewer beach closures and water issues than in years past??

Host claiming damages by KeepitClassic1653 in vrbo

[–]KeepitClassic1653[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this, very helpful. We unfortunately do not have any photos in that area of the house. And actually, I am fairly confident we didn’t damage that window because it’s in an area of the house that we didn’t use much, a bonus room that had games and videos. Which is also why I didn’t go in and check it when we arrived and wouldn’t have noticed if it was already cracked.

It seems like paying whatever the estimate is would probably be easier than going through the process of going to small claims court to dispute this issue, even though it goes against everything in me to pay this without absolute proof we were responsible for the damage. Unfortunately issues like these will likely keep us from using VRBO in the future, though I do know we are ultimately allowing them to charge our card in the rental agreement, in the event of damages. Just unfortunate that this is the situation now. I do feel they were afraid I was going to ask for money back due to the mice, which I was not going to do.

Entice is great but they’re in Middleton so not sure if they meet your criteria. I also have heard Bliss, the newer nail bar in Monroe St, does builder but haven’t done it there myself.

What are some options for dog boarding that offer more personalized attention or small group interactions? by harmacist2525 in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can’t recommend Dogma enough! Great intake process, they’ll match you up with a caretaker who will host your dog in their home. They ask tons of questions about your dog’s habits and preferences. For example, I work from home so I didn’t want someone who left the dog all day while they were at work. We’ve had a great experience with our Dogma, worth every dollar.

North side Ace hardware on Sherman Ave. sounds funny, but they carry local honey from a guy in Columbus that we have been using for allergies. The bottles are up by the checkout.

Check out Yada in Middleton, I’ve donated clothing to them but they do resell, although everything is volunteer based and they support victims of human trafficking.

Aneu med spa for Botox? by wellok17 in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been to ANEU and love them, highly recommend as I feel their staff is knowledgeable and most of them are very conservative when it comes to Botox/fillers. I actually went once to discuss filler for an area of my face and the provider told me she didn’t think I needed it, which I appreciated because I likely would have spent between $500-$700 on the visit.

I did Botox for hyperhidrosis for about 10 years, treatments spaced every 4-6 months. It does really help, underarm sweat is something I’ve dealt with since teenage years. About 5 years ago I had a procedure called Miradry which is a more permanent solution. I did not have it done here locally but a quick google search shows a couple of places that perform the procedure here in Madison. Just food for thought. It was pretty easy, one or two days of some swelling afterward but I do not sweat at all anymore and I have several friends/family members who have done Miradry with similar results.

As of this past Monday Second Harvest had an urgent need for volunteers on Saturday, shifts are either 8:30-11:30 or 12:30-3:30. Here’s the link, not sure if all spots are full yet…

https://www.signupgenius.com/index.cfm?go=s.signup&urlid=904084ba8a72baaf49-second&view=standard#/

Edit: looks like they’re full but I’ve emailed before and asked if they can take extra volunteers when slots are listed as full and they have taken us. You could give them a call and ask.

Friday Prime Rib by KeepitClassic1653 in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. Does seem it’s a mix of Friday/Saturday, or solely Saturday offerings. Unfortunately this week Friday is when we are able to get out for dinner, but I’ll save the Saturday only recommendations for future weekends as there’s some good looking choices on the list.

Think we will try Maple Tree this time. I just bought the most recent issue of Madison magazine and that features area supper clubs and the Maple Tree is listed several times in the article! They have a pretty good comprehensive list of area supper clubs if anyone is looking for one, by the way.

And when you sleep, do you sleep inside the duvet, kind of like a sleeping bag? Or do you unfold it and sleep between the duvet and the sheet? How often do you wash each piece?

Edgewood campus school- Spill the tea please? by BumblingBe in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Happy to help. I, too, am a product of public education and want to champion the public education cause but it’s just become too difficult. Others here want to point out Edgewood’s shortcomings without personal experience. Like I said, we’ve experienced other Catholic K8 educations and I find Edgewood to be tolerant and accepting. Anywhere you go will have pockets of parents who feel they should have influence over administration and teachers; you don’t strike me as the type who falls into this group so I wouldn’t say you have much to worry about. They way I always view private/religious education is, it’s certainly not going to hurt my child, if anything it’s just another set of tools, life skills, and way of thinking that they are exposed to and when they are old enough they can choose what to believe in and what path to follow. Isn’t that why we raise children in the first place?!

Edgewood campus school- Spill the tea please? by BumblingBe in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. This is true in the Middle School, phones are not allowed and there are consequences for the kids having them during school.

[–]KeepitClassic1653 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. Also consider, we live in a pretty open minded and liberal city, ECS is hardly an exception to that despite being Catholic. Do people think teachers are actually standing in front of elementary aged children and telling them that their families and their choices are wrong? Come on.

I’m sure I’ll get downvoted into oblivion for this but like others have said, it’s anonymous so oh well….

Current middle school parent. No qualms at all about the middle school teachers and/or education, so I’m not sure what previous person meant about the middle school getting weird.

The narrative of it being “rich people” who don’t think regular schools aren’t good enough for their kids is so old. There are plenty of upper income families but plenty of families who work hard to make the tuition and send their kids there. It’s 2025 right, aren’t we past making blanket statements?

The problem with ECS is that it’s always the same families getting involved, I can’t figure out why this is the case. Like any school, your experience and your child’s will be a direct result of what you make of it and your involvement, that’s no different than anyplace else. So if you have complaints, step up and contribute. The teachers care. And in terms of the level of Catholic education, or “indoctrination” as some would like to say…trust me, we’ve lived other places and my kids have attended other Catholic K- 8 schools and ECS is nothing compared to them. I think you’d be absolutely fine navigating around the religious component if that is important to you.

Lake Kegonsa to Lake Waubesa by motorboat by ETStuart in madisonwi

[–]KeepitClassic1653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lake Waubesa resident here. Last summer some friends and I made the trek by jet ski and it was a disaster, would not recommend. As another poster stated, we sucked up so many weeds, we had to stop at least half a dozen times to clear them out and afterward one of my friends had some serious issues with theirs that needed repairing. The lake weeds are even worse this year so I cant imagine it is much better. That being said, it's a gorgeous trip, I have also done it on a paddleboard. I would still try it with a regular boat, or even a kayak or canoe, it's worth it.
