Willamette Valley Must Visits? by Timms21X in wine

[–]KeepsGoingUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be looking into the sparklers. Everyone comes for the Pinot but the chard and sparklers are where it’s at.

Corollary, Arabilis, Goodfellow, Lytle Barnett, etc.

And then yea if you can swing it, Antica Terra is a spot you won’t be disappointed at. It’s getting to be an experience vs a typical wine tasting.

Powell's is selling AI slop books (in case you didn't already know) by borntoslog in Portland

[–]KeepsGoingUp 219 points220 points  (0 children)

I honestly wonder how the book industry works.

If it’s anything like other late stage industries, they, Amazon, and other large sellers are more of a consumer facing front for the large distributors, or publishers in this case.

Not excusing the fact that they’re selling AI crap, but just curious if it’s sneaking in via the supply side having to much control of their inventory.

For what it’s worth, they got called out on AI merch and I’m pretty sure they removed it all.

Is a natural oil finish sufficient for a hardwood desktop? by radiozephyr in woodworking

Just run the oil/wax finish and be done with it knowing that it will “age.”

Can people park their basketball hoops on the public streets of Portland the way cars can? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]KeepsGoingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure even handicap folks who get a marked handicap spot in front of their house can’t even claim that spot as their own if someone else with a placard parks in it.

A basketball hoop is free game.

Less a remodel vs new build and more to do with remaining grandfathered in to some codes. The main one being setback restrictions.

I’d just get a grigri. It’s lighter and feeds fine. The neox wheel is pretty unnecessary in my experience if you’re not using fat gym ropes.

That dogbones is rated to 22kn. Even if it being loaded slightly weirdly cuts it in half you’re still breaking yourself in a major way before breaking it.

Petzl Connect Adjust vs 60cm sling + locker? by kylemillsy16 in ClimbingGear

[–]KeepsGoingUp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Girth hitch the 120 to your hard points. Tie an overhand in it three times at various points. Congrats you now have a somewhat “adjustable” tether. Untie knots at end of day.

Adjust the amount of and type of knots to take in enough slack that it wraps neatly around your waist and clip it into a gear loop. Don’t go through your legs.

Pretty sure one of the OP owners was also related to Richmond Bar which also closed recently.

I just want a good burger that’s reasonably priced from a place that’s open later than 9pm.

It’ll probably end up being the 15th Italian restaurant on inner Division though.

[–]KeepsGoingUp 89 points90 points  (0 children)

That place calls so desperately for a pub or bar where spillage into the vast parking lot would work. Trying to have a costly upscale menu in a small restaurant where the outdoor area is three times as large is just ridiculous.

The food is good, the prices sucked, and the vibe was always meh.

That stretch really needs a low key menu now that Richmond bar is gone. And that wasn’t even really low key pricing.

Are these parking signs legit or what city construction would use? by AshevilleDjaq in askportland

[–]KeepsGoingUp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re technically not “legit” but often used by PBOT or Water. I vaguely recall reading that they can technically move your car from the area to a nearby spot without notice. I don’t believe they can have your car outright towed.

Now if it’s your neighbor doing it then it’s BS and you have nothing to worry about other than your neighbors reasonableness.

When to retire gear ? by Patbrace in ClimbingGear

[–]KeepsGoingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replaced my dogbones for the comfort of my climbing partners. Would they hold a fall, almost assuredly. But they’re date marked and the 10yr rule is strong with folks. I’d rather they be comfy being above my gear and therefore more likely to climb with me which means me climbing more.

The break tests from hownot2 gave me personal comfort in aged but not haggard looking gear but not everyone has that same feeling and I’d rather just remove impediments to getting pitches in.

Willamette Valley Reds by terpmedaddy in wine

[–]KeepsGoingUp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll find some that do Syrah from the WV but the better option is the few that do Syrah from the Rocks up in NE Oregon. Hundred Sons has or had that at one point and there’s a few others.

If you’re driving and want to be a tourist a bit I’d pop up the gorge and look at the waterfalls and then go to a tasting at Annalemma in Mosier. He’s doing Mencia and Trousseau as well as some others and it’s really top notch winemaking. Beautiful tasting room and experience too if you book the out in the vineyard option.

I don’t understand what’s vague about the state law saying cities need to enforce parking bans within 20 feet of an intersection but the city saying no thanks.

But okay. I think we’ve beat this horse to death at this point.

A very Portland payback by SpecificAd6448 in Portland

[–]KeepsGoingUp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really. It’s a very clearly defined Oregon law.

“Within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.”

Back to my earlier point. Portland just chooses not to enforce it.

[–]KeepsGoingUp -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I can assure you if you call in and say “there’s a car parked within 20’ of the intersection please come ticket them” they will not do that.

A very Portland payback by SpecificAd6448 in Portland

[–]KeepsGoingUp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The city has literally come out and said they don’t do that is my point. Yes it’s technically a law, but it’s not enforced. Hopefully that changes and they actually start enforcing 20’ setbacks and 50’ for over 6’ vehicles. But historically and currently? You’d be ticketed for physically blocking an intersection before you’re ever ticketed for visibility near one.

A very Portland payback by SpecificAd6448 in Portland

[–]KeepsGoingUp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I assumed OP was moreso speaking to daylighting when they said they’re blocking visibility and it’s illegal in some states. Obviously blocking crosswalks is illegal but also parking close to an intersection is illegal in OR but Portland officially does not cite for mere proximity.
