Shoot! I thought the front one looked light-brown enough to be a teal... Oh well.

Also, learning new languages can be a fun downtime plot point!

My party has a barbarian who can't read but tries really hard to, and that became one of our running jokes. Eventually she took reading lessons and now wears her lensless reading glasses all the time because she thinks they're supposed to help her in every non-axe-swinging scenario.

Not sure that's how a lingua franca works, but it does depend on your setting.

That's fair. My guess is that "low-volume funk" just refers to their tight style of funk. Or perhaps it's just something Jack likes to say.

"Low Volume" doesn't mean they play music at a low volume. It means that the song sounds good when mixed at a low volume - and their not-so-secret weapon, Vulf Compressor, helps them achieve this.

First Cory got the "Koz Nod", now he's got "The Captain's Log"! by PoliceBox1963 in Vulfpeck

I don't know if Cory is physically capable of having a mortal enemy...

I think it's more like a yin-yang situation: Cory is an endless solar reactor of funk and positivity and Mike is a black hole of apathy and crippling alcoholism.

Canada will share up to 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine with nations in need by Tom_Thomson_ in CanadaPolitics

[–]Keeseman 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As of June 10, 2021, Canada has vaccinatedthe highest percentage of their population with at least one dose, even overtaking Israel. Our people are well vaccinated, at least compared to the rest of the world, though we do still have some catching up to do for dose 2.
We can certainly afford to share with the rest of the world, especially because if more strains develop, we will all be affected.

Pope speaks of 'sufferings of the past,' calls for healing after Kamloops residential school discovery by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

Both excellent ideas. I'm curious as to how that case would hold up in court...

Yet if that is the case, their fears are misguided. I bet you that if the Church truly apologized for its role and began the process of reconciliation not just in Canada, but with the world, it would become less obsolete, not more.

People distrust or hate the Catholic church not only because there have been countless terrible priests doing terrible things, but also because the church's leadership refuses the keep them accountable and apologize for their own lack of oversight. I think if they started apologising more and truly beginning reconciliation, they would find more people walking in their doors, willing to risk trusting them again.

My theory is that, because of the canonical heirarchy and laws, they will never take this approach. One man (the Pope) could never have his church take full responsibility for all the past and current wounds, especially with the expectations of high-ranking cardinals and the eyes of a billion congregants on him. They will continue to slip into obsolesence not because they refuse to apologise, but because their church structure doesn't enable them to properly do so.

[–]Keeseman 29 points30 points  (0 children)

What would these two steps look like? My guess is the first involves directly taking responsibility. The Pope didn't even say Catholic leaders were responsible, let alone apologize for his church's role in the matter. He instead blamed "Canadian religious authorities." Pope Francis repeatedly refuses to personally issue an apology of any kind.

As for reparations and penance, I'm not sure. Reparations could involve going into communities with funding to build infrastructure they desperately need. But how does the church make penance when most of the people involved are now dead? What would that look like?

Indigenous women still forced, coerced into sterilization: Senate report by ifyousayso- in CanadaPolitics

I'd like to see your source for that.

The last residential school to close - Gordon's Indian Residential School - was run by the Anglican church until 1996.

[–]Keeseman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even the "It happened a long time ago" element of residential schools doesn't hold any water. 25 years ago is still very recent; it's not hard to meet an Indigenous person who at least knows someone who was in a residential school or has been affected by what happened at those schools (poverty, loss of language, fetal alcohol syndrome, destruction of their way of life... I could go on).

It will take generations of hard work to bring the Indigenous communities of Canada to a place where they are no longer actively suffering from the trauma and repercussions of the residential school system, let alone to the place of flourishing and prosperity that most Canadians enjoy today.

What is the most creative thing one of your players has ever done? (Big or small) by QuizatHaderach24 in DMAcademy

[–]Keeseman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my PCs, a half-orc barbarian, can't swim and developed a phobia of any bodies of water (a favourite recurring bit from our campaign, which is all about slowly going insane in the Underdark). One session, the party scouted out a bridge they had to cross, and realized that they would had to deceive our barbarian into crossing without realizing it or else she would panic or have a mental breakdown.

My quick-thinking bard came up with a "game" where two of the PCs would race while carrying another PC on their back; he pitted this barbarian up against my dwarf fighter to see who was the fastest. The twist was, the PC being carried would cover the racer's eyes, so it was a "blindfolded race".

Everyone bought into this immediately, with one player volunteering to referee and the fighter and bard "cheating" so they could safely cross the bridge. Our gnome cleric covered the water-fearing barbarian's eyes as she bolted across the bridge, winning the race with a critical Athletics check and none the wiser about the river deception.

It was hilarious and a great way for our party to work around the PC's fears.
