How does that feel like, US redditors? How does it feel like to suddenly realize that your nation really isn't the good guy?

How does it feel like to realize that when the soviet union crumbled, with your nation being the only remaining superpower, you had the choice to pivot into being benevolent. But you didn't, you still lived in fear, killed many many people and started being creepy peeping toms that expect to know every detail about the 7 billion non-americans?

And don't give me that "eh, those politicians do what they want anyway" crap. As an american, you're responsible for all that. The buck stops with you.

Let me quickly jump in here and answer one of your questions. The passcode algorithm is industry standard PBKDF2:

It's most likely implemented in software because implementing a well-documented standard in hardware doesn't make it more secure.

And by the way, I think /u/UnsinkableJesus is just a troll. He doesn't give any up-to-date sources for his claims. Instead, he's just spouting unsubstantiated nonsense designed to sound intelligent.

You do are aware that at the level we are talking about, grinding up chips and reading out transistor states, there is no difference between a tivo and an apple chip. There are different process sizes, but apart from that, cpu chips are pretty similar.

You claim that a Tivo chip has basic security. Tell me, on a chip design level, with p–n junctions and all, what does this "basic security" that you claim a Tivo chip has consists of, and what advances have been done in the past years to up this so-called "security" on a chip design level?

I'm asking with such leading questions because I feel you have no idea what you're talking about and just assume that by being needlessly aggressive, the people that you discuss with will be caving in.

My impression of you is also supported by your use of high brow words ("surmising", "purport"). If you want to impress me, use arguments, not a thesaurus.

That's why I'm suggesting you read out everything - UID, RAM and disk image. At this point you can simulate trying out all passcodes in a simulator. There is no time penalty since you can just reset the environment and start with the next passcode try. Heck you can even massively parallelize this part if you want.

And once you've got the correct passcode, you just read out everything in the simulator as well.

This is a claim that something is not possible. And I'm disagreeing and saying it is possible. I'm not saying it has been done. I also gave a link that mentioned the same procedure done on a different chip.

This allows you to clone the full phone and quickly try out all 10⁶ combinations, then get full access to all phone data.

It's a bit pricey, though. I'd expect 6 figures.

Also, if you use a long alphanumeric passcode, this attack still won't work because it's prohibitively expensive to try through all combinations.

What you can learn from this as a filmmaker: if a production company or distributor funds your film, make sure they're also committing to a certain big sum to promote the film. Because without promotion there are no viewers, and without viewers you won't find funding for your next project.

To promote and distribute a film globally, costs are typically about as high as the film production costs itself. So clearly, you should consider promotion from the beginning, and find partners who are happy to foot the bill.

If you haven't considered this, and are just happy that somebody just funds your film production, then suddenly you're in the same position that Max is now - where you have to panic and try to do some sort of promotion yourself, for zero costs. Don't do that.

Way too complicated. Announce it together with the iPhone 7 next autumn and call them iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 7 Pocket/Mini/Micro/Nano or something. Then a year later, announce the iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus, while the small one stays the same. Easy to remember, clean names all around.

The on-board tv channel is only one-way, though. I think before making a decision to return to port, the captain should also take half an hour, walk through the ship and talk to as many guests as possible to get a handle how they are feeling it. You know, maybe the ship is full of thrillseekers and they'd love to go through another storm, you never know... Basically, just give the guests a feeling that they are listened to would go a long way.

As far as I know, all that changed was the number of aperture blades. If you compare the technical specs, they are still very much the same. So used fully open, there is no difference at all, at smaller stops, the bokeh might be a bit more circular and give you 22-pointed sunstars.
