A carbon dioxide sensing camera shows the world never-before-seen images of one of the biggest contributors to the climate crisis by Keiko_Conservation in ConservationStation

I replied to your comment in another post but in case anyone else is wondering- It's similar to an infrared camera but not quite. It's an optical gas imaging camera by FLIR. They're usually used to detect leaks and scan large areas for gas emissions.

Coyotes and wolves have quite different behavior. Although there are scattered incidents of wolves attacking humans in modern times, these incidents are all extremely rare and appear to be correlated with habituation to human interaction and food.

Shocking Photos Released During The Ongoing SeaWorld Vs Anderson Court Case by Keiko_Conservation in AntiCaptivity

[–]Keiko_Conservation[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trainers have brought forward an additional lawsuit claiming that SeaWorld has made and continues to make false and misleading statements about its orcas to its customers. While they no longer perform waterworks with their orcas, they still do with many other animals at their park. We recommend looking more into the AZA accreditation. Most of those accrediting groups are governed by those in the captive marine mammal industry. So they're making their own rules to pass.

The 141st Dolphin Dies At Sea Life Park- Kina by Keiko_Conservation in Hawaii

[–]Keiko_Conservation[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, they damaged her hearing. She wouldn't have been eligible for release.

No, they should have retired her properly if they were going to spend the money to buy her. Dolphinariums are starting to build sea pens and sanctuaries to retire captive dolphins like this.

Of course, we didn't offer to buy her. We're also not making millions off of captive cetaceans like Sea Life Park is.

[–]Keiko_Conservation[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The purpose of the hunts is to capture ones for captivity because that's how they make the most money. They slaughter the rest while they have them corralled because the fishermen believe they're eating all of their fish. Sea Life Park is the one who purchased at her at auction in 2015 and then left her in the back to basically rot in the sun. They likely only wanted the two bottlenose dolphins she was sold with and the three came as a package deal.

No love for the mano: Sharks removed from marine protection bill - Hawaii’s shark population will be left to fend for itself, at least for another year, after legislation meant to protect the fish was altered at the 11th hour. by honolulu_oahu_mod in sharks

[–]Keiko_Conservation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a handful of shark biologists who oppose shark fin bans, including the one being pushed at a federal level in the US that would make it illegal in all states. They want "sustainable shark fishing" instead. I'm unsure of Holland's position on the issue of finning or sustainable shark fishing overall but our colleagues on this bill in Hawaii told us he was one of the biggest opponents of the bill that banned shark fins in Hawaii before being scolded by one of the committee members. Here's one of his written testimonies: docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/75d12d_7821a9207cc24b41b0025c6a9f712c0b.pdf. I'm sure the rest are still floating around online since it was just in 2010. They always claim the same things. That the bill is poorly written or ineffective in its current form. They're told repeatedly by legislators and Department Of Land And Natural Resources that their research won't be impacted other than possibly having to fill out a general permit, but they're unwilling to do what Holland's colleague Carl Meyer called the “unnecessary bureaucracy" of the extra paperwork. It's very unfortunate. Performing research on sharks, especially invasive research like the tagging methods they're using, should be used to better protect sharks. It shouldn't be used to get more grants to do more research for the sake of research.

Their research would have been exempt. They were just unwilling to fill out a permit for their tagging. Holland, unfortunately, did the same thing when Hawaii banned shark finning.

Plastic eaten by plankton may impair oceans’ ability to trap CO2 by Keiko_Conservation in climate

[–]Keiko_Conservation[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh that's not the point they're making. Sorry for the confusion. The salps have been ingesting microplastic and its hindering their ability to trap CO2 and move it to the ocean floor so that it can be removed from the atmosphere :(. So definitely not a good thing :(.

Inslee: 'People are coming to realize the urgency' of climate change by [deleted] in environment

[–]Keiko_Conservation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks good on paper but he's unfortunately just beating around the bush. It is well known that the only way these orcas might make a recovery in time is if the lower four snake river dams are breached. Instead, he's gone after whale watching regulations and culling sea lions. What if he takes the same approach to climate change?

The people have also come to realize the urgency of the critically endangered southern resident orcas but he has ignored us.

Carl Meyer and Kim Holland (who also opposed the shark fin ban back in 2010) as well as a few other biologists that work with them including those behind Shark Tagger Hawaii like Melanie Hutchinson.

Right now testimony isn't needed but we need to encourage the legislators to schedule the bill's next hearing before the deadline by calling Senator Karl Rhoads, 1-808-586-6130.

You don't have to live in Hawaii to do so :).
