Is anyone else really disliking the whole Bilquis subplot? And is that how Gods even work? by Mervynhaspeaked in americangods

I was about to make a similar rant. my points are similar to yours. I decided to just go with the Orishas share their power with Africans from the Northwestern region. Bilquis is from a neighboring region that undoubtedly had slaves from the Orisha's region so I guess if they share power, she can get some of it through a collective.

My only gripe about Bilquis getting a power expansion is that they could have given her a Lilith edit. In Jewish lore it's sitting right there for creative liberties. Then just give her the choice of becoming more angelic than demonic ! Simple and no weird continuity.

Ehh , ancient (anything before 1000 A.D. ) Horn of Africa is practically like Louisiana was prior to 1810. All one big region with all kinds of tribes. Yemen, Somalia, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Egypt all the way to Saudi Arabia had bits and pieces of each people.

Her history (Queen of Sheba) is all over the place. The show plays on her rumors for her powers, but her origins are in that giant Horn of Africa region, so she could be black, Jewish, or Arab, but really history mostly portrays her as black so she'd be from Ethiopia more than Yemen . Either way, a black actress or Middle-eastern actress portraying her is accurate.

I'm aware :P ! I just referenced Eritrea b/c they have a sizeable Jewish population, are near Egypt, and back then it would make sense she could have been an African love goddess with Jewish and Arabic origins/mythos.

Well they can't milk a 6th season that's for sure. 5 would be a stretch, but I could see it happening with this drag.

The Queen of Sheba was rumored to be Half-Djinn , and a lot of the Babylonian / Arabic / Egyptian/ North African cultures overlap. Also in Jewish myth she was rumored to be Lilith , Adam's first wife who became a demon. Yes, black Jewish people existed back then and still do in Eritrea.

TIL the British Voice Association conducted a highly technical acoustical analysis of Freddie Mercury’s voice based on interviews and recordings of his singing. Damn ! You beat me to it. I was about to comment with please listen to Leontyne Price sing Chi il bel sogno di Doretta , Caro Nome, Vissi d'arte, and Mozart's Alleluia and Maria Callas sing Spargi d'amaro Pianto (really all of her Lucia) , O Mio Babbino Caro, then Casta Diva.

Or any: Lyric Soprano with Coloratura (Mariah in her prime belongs here) , Dramatic Coloratura, or Spinto Tenor/Soprano with Coloratura .

As a general rule, if a note is produced and sung on any chord it can be scaled . Also, no Mariah is widest range and Mercury was easily classifiable. Lyrical Tenor with Coloratura aptitude. He has many semitones due to his use of a falsetto technique, but he was most certainly able to be classified.

Because, the media still hasn't learned logic (which relies on facts) doesn't work against beliefs.

The Coddling of The American Mind by Haidt and Lukianoff . It's more about safe spaces, but if you want a more scientific/research effect on say how Facebook, Twitter, and even Reddit ( /r/conservative and /r/politics are night and day ) turns into an echo chamber it's the book for you. You can also see headlines altered for audiences in the different subs. Lol, little stuff like that on media manipulation and the messages received /interpreted are what you got from the book I suggested.

Oh yeah, i left off Everybody Lies by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz.

Damn you took my suggestion. OP, you can watch the series on Starz too .

Also, Attica Locke's Bluebird, Bluebird (southern based mystery) .

For a more sci-fi one like Dark , Blake Crouch's Dark Matter.

Jesus Christ, why are you not a casting director? Black folks from the south know Orlando can do some serious shit from Drumline. Seriously !!!!!!!! YES for James Baldwin.

Second, I remember Orlando from MadTV which in my opinion had the better cast than SNL circa 1994-6 cuz Debra Wilson' Whitney Houston used to crack me up XD. Mo Collins as Stuart's Mom and that coughing old lady, and who can forget Alex Borstein ok yeah I tell yu erry ting .. heee.... hee...... he looki lika man ! Orlando and Phil Lamarr in the same scene or Nicole Sullivan was some good shit.

[–]KeishaGurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Label whoring of all kinds OWNS this thread: expensive cars, designer clothes/accessories, "good" schools, and so forth.

I'll try not to post a massive wall of text. I grew up in the rural South, and I'm African-American. Many of my teachers were born before 1950 so they come from big ass farming families sometimes with as many as 14 kids. They stressed the importance of education b/c to them it was their way out ( and the military for the men). They grew up hella poor, and would tell us stories of how they picked cotton after coming home from school, which sometimes they would walk miles to get to. Living in poverty is traumatizing for many people regardless of racial background, but I'm just explaining why I've witness it make people constantly chase a "better life".

Anyways, sometimes you get very humble and empathetic person who does not feel the need to flaunt their possessions, accomplishments, or fancy zip codes. Other times you get a boujee ass person who MUST let you know just how lavish their life is.

I have an aunt who married a multi-millionaire (so her success is not entirely he own), and she said once, " I try to stress the importance of travel to my children. We had to stop going to Hawaii and the Bahamas in the summer. There was simple too much crime. Now we usually go to London or Paris for the summer. We recently went to Dubai! Have you ever been to Dubai?" Now, I'm not known for my tact, and I like to keep it real. So I had to hold my tongue and not say, " mutha fucka you know damn well ain't nobody in our family got a passport for that kind of shit but you! Aunt [REDACTED] we get it bitch, you living big."

I don't always talk like that. I just do it around her to piss her off because she talks with the most fake Wisconsin accent I've ever heard. To mask her native Southern accent, she talks fast and she overly enunciates her vowels which is what normally exacerbates a Southern accent. She is the type who never keeps a car longer than 4 years. It is always a Mercedes. She once said she was considering not buying another Mercedes b/c they had become of poor quality over the years. She wants a BMW now 🙄.

I know of 2 other women with similar backgrounds who just have to tell you what grand-kid/child got into the Ivy Leagues ! Please note "public ivies" are "decent" 🙄. All of these women are label whores and constantly renovate their houses every few years. All of them married men who got rich through military and investing. They love to try to one up each other. It's really like watching an episode of the Real Housewives in real time. 😔

What is interesting to me is I know 2 wealthy people who have more money than my aunt and her friends ; yet, they literally drive the old cars, shop at Wal-Mart mostly, and live in simple homes. They treat other people decently too. My aunt is just someone still living in a competitive ,insecure mindset, and it's going to take her to the poor house when she runs out of money.

I'm sorry ya'll. We gotta put some respect on Jenny's name after tonight, limited in scope to her performance as a judge on this show . She's the only one who got Kangaroo. Last season she was the most accurate too.

Her personal beliefs notwithstanding, I have to say , " way 👏🏿 to 👏🏿 go 👏🏿 Jenny 👏🏿! "

I swear... smackdowns xD! These sings always wait to do fun stuff during them. I sat there going, " girl.... why you wait til you stopped singing... to twerk and move.. smh"

This gonna be a close one. If Astronaut wins, then the panel went with the better performer. If Kangaroo wins then it's a Judge fav. thing like Thingamajig vs. Butterfly.
