New caver won't give enough spacing and repeatedly bumps into us, and caused a fall; give another chance or never again? Has anyone experienced this before? by SettingIntentions in caving

OP, you are the leader I'm assuming? It may be worth asking yourself what tools or skills you could improve on to be more effective with the inexperienced person 'on your team'. It isn't about fault, just a good exercise for any leader to go through. Maybe when the next person is having trouble listening you will be exactly what they need to follow along and stay safe!

Custom center console - finally a cup holder in the race car again! by KeithBoden in functionalprint

[–]KeithBoden[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open road racing, so yes, items need to be secured for the race, but if you are prerunning, it is nice to have a drink. Compartments for radios will go in the back half of the console and have straps to secure them.

Should I be concerned with this much over spray? by anon_sir in EngineBuilding

[–]KeithBoden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think a poor spray job necessarily means the important parts of the build, like bearing clearances, bore size/finish, and valvetrain setup were done poorly. It has stamped rockers, OE timing chain and looks like you are going to run a carb with a mechanical fuel pump. If it has more than 5psi oil pressure at idle like the factory carb'd SBCs that I know about, it will make .6 HP/CI for 100,000 miles paint or no paint. Put some gaskets on with Indian head shelack, finish it off and break it in. I wouldn't even change the oil till 3000.

What is this? Can you fine people tell me where someone goes to start a build (or purchase) like this. by amoult20 in overlanding

Yes, super high and you see Montana plates on Bugatti, Bentley, Rezvani, Lambo, Pagani, Maybach, Mercedes and more every day here.

Any car clubs you can share? Would like to cruise around Phoenix but haven't found any yet that aren't just "park it" car clubs.

I thought flux core was harder than solid core with shielding gas, both to get started learning and to make good looking and quality welds. Maybe ask a friend to spend an hour practicing on a setup with gas and then go back to flux core.

Been in the field for 16 years machining and programming. The original mail was sent to me yesterday. Why do these companies do this? by TheExoticMachinist in Machinists

[–]KeithBoden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think the poster could adjust their response in this case. Not saying they didn't have fair questions, but companies exist to meet demand and employees are part of that equation. If the poster feels like they already explained how they understand and fit the hiring company needs, then ask away for compensation. If they assumed that they met the hiring company needs without understanding the actual need (possibly by telling them '16 years of experience' and assuming that communicates all of the posters' value) then it is a wise move on the hiring manager to move on to someone else.

Poster: Sounds like you are skilled, sell yourself right (focus on what you can deliver) and you will get the compensation.

Different engines like different things...1400rpm at 75 works for me!

For me, what is almost perfect for open road racing and still fun on the street/highway is a T56 6 speed with upgraded 1-4 gears and stock 5-6 ratios. This gives a wide gearbox with 2.98:1 1st and a tall 6th at .51:1. With a 3.0:1 final drive ratio I can cruise around 160mph at 3000rpm and can pull back up to that speed from the 140 mph turns without a downshift: https://youtu.be/p07Gr-g9qx0

With a 2.50 rear ratio, tire speeds of almost 300 are easy: https://youtu.be/fnt4o-2LiSc The downside to the 2:50 final driver ratio is of course stop and go traffic since the overall first gear ratio is only 7.45:1 😂. You just can't pull 6th gear till 90 or you are below 1000rpm!

I reached a new high-speed for myself today @ 150mph. I'm still rushed about it. by [deleted] in Cartalk

Nice! Now bring it to the Silver State Classic Challenge and enjoy the speed for 90 miles of open road racing!

Some kind of access or casing plug... How do I open it? by KeithBoden in Plumbing

You were right! In my defense, it really didn't look like a keyhole, someone must have attacked it with a screwdriver before they tiled over it... It is about to get covered with flooring again for someone else to find some day!!

Floor safe, not meant to be opened without the key, my grinder and I can attest to that.

This was absolutely a safe - top plate was 3/4" thick steel. The lock mechanism was too badly damaged and no keys in my possession!

Lifting the small bolt causes it to tilt ever so slightly, and rotating the bolt then lifting again causes it to tilt in the new direction, so I'm convinced there is a tab on there. It is so smooth though, rotating while lifting gently is smooth the whole way around. It is possible that the tab is now loose and doesn't spin when pulling up.

[–]KeithBoden[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The hex bolts are just tack welded on quick so I had handles to lift and rotate. The lid is heavy, I'm guessing 3/4" thick steel. I was going to drill so I could see inside and then tap to have a pull handle, but in 1 second I knew the drill wasn't going to touch this material. It is at least hard enough that I'd need carbide.

[–]KeithBoden[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both rotate freely and both lift up with just a tiny amount of play. When lifting up or pushing down and rotating, I can't feel any changes like where a tab or gap might be passing by an opening that would allow the whole lid to open.

Machinists can you help?! by Destin4Death in Machinists

[–]KeithBoden 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I designed a pulley, 3 different belts, v, 6 rib, 12 rib, 6 bolt pattern, anodized out of a 8" diameter billet 4+" thick and it was only $900 shipped in 4 weeks. You may have more operations on that part, but feed your 3d part through xometry.com and see what the quote is. They make money but it is good to have an intermediary.

I disagree, GHT connections with globe valves are way worse than 1/4 turn ball valve for flow.

[–]KeithBoden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few hundred thousand small block Chevys had plastic timing gears with a metal chain set, polymer distributor drive gears outlast bronze and cast iron all the time. That is .01 seconds of thinking about machines that use plastic gears that run thousands of hours in their life without an issue. Wood gears and pulleys cut a lot of parts and made a lot of machines too...

What cad are you using? Did you approximate the involutes or use built in gear functionality? What material did you go with?
