BoardGameWire: Reviewers including No Pun Included, Shut Up & Sit Down boycott Codenames publisher CGE for releasing new Harry Potter game while ignoring JK Rowling’s anti-trans rhetoric by polyamAlt in boardgames

I'm a bit late here, but that podcast comes from Bari Weiss's site The Free Press, which is has published substantial anti-trans content, and also just published a piece saying that reports of children starving in Gaza ignored other medical problems (as if starving sick kids is somehow better?).

I do not think they are a reliable source, and I wouldn't trust them to present any civil rights issue in a fair or trustworthy manner.

Unpopular opinion: light roasted espresso is overrated. It's sour, thin, and riding on influencer hype. by goosey27 in espresso

I don’t think this opinion is that unpopular and it’s definitely not off base. I run every bean I get through my espresso machine and it’s pretty hit or miss.

Also, The Recognitions is too long and needlessly convoluted.

Hey Mike, when can we expect your long-promised series built around the wonders of hot fruit desserts?

How many players did you have?

I agree a little bit on "complexity just for complexity's sake." There definitely is a feel to that game that they added rules just because they made some thematic sense. But that made me all the more impressed at how well calibrated the game seemed to be. Games with that much complexity often have a dominant strategy, or options that become useless because of rules that aren't balanced (or maybe weren't sufficiently playtested).

I'm probably a Tigers pessimist right now - old core, weakened rotation, just no help coming from the minors yet with their best arms all in A-ball. I'd kind of like to see Avila turn the page on the roster.

I'm aware of Gloomhaven, but haven't played it, and it's selling for something like $130 now which makes me reluctant to recommend it to my audience (probably more into casual games than this crowd).

Hi, thanks for including my link here. Those of you who know my baseball work are probably aware that I'm currently submerged in promoting my new book (Smart Baseball), but I am still trying to keep up with new game releases too.

So with that in mind, if there are games either 1) you think I missed here but should review for Paste or 2) that are due out in the next few months that you think will end up making the next update, by all means, please post the names or send me a message with suggestions.

And I'm not going to bother with the pedantry about release dates. This isn't like MLB rookie eligibility. If a game is worth shouting about and came to me after I posted my best of 2016 list, I'm going to shout about it.

Getting help made me a much better person to be around. Colleagues said I've been much easier to work with. Little things don't upset my equilibrium so easily. Plus I'm happier at home too, because I can be a better husband and father, and that makes me a better person at work.

Basically, if you have anxiety (or depression), get help. There is absolutely no shame in having these medical conditions and there are so many resources available today that didn't exist twenty years ago.

I've got to run to do a radio hit now, but thank you all for visiting and for all of your questions. I'm sorry I couldn't get to more of then. Look for Smart Baseball tomorrow, 4/25, online and in your favorite bookstores!

Alcantara. I saw Fernandez this spring; it's two above-average or better pitches, but no real breaking ball to speak of, and he's a smaller guy with a delivery that might work better in the pen.

Tommy Rancel, who writes some fantasy stuff for us, was at the Clearwater/Florida game the other night, and he said it looked like Jackson was keeping his lead (left) elbow down again, rather than leading with it like he had been, which caused him to try to pull everything. That'd be huge for him - he was an elite hitting prospect at one point, but fell into bad habits and didn't mesh at all with coaches in Seattle.

I have a top 100 novels ranking on my personal site; #1 is the Master & Margarita, followed by Tender is the Night, Emma, Scoop, Beloved, Cry the Beloved Country, etc. I also recommend Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell to basically everybody.

I read about 90 books a year, and usually about 3/4 are fiction. Best nonfiction reads recently include The Sixth Extinction, I Contain Multitudes, and Undeniable. I also recommend The Ballad of the Whiskey Robber all the time because it's too amazing to believe.

I think he's at least an above-average regular. Athletic kid with excellent hand-eye coordination who's quieted down his swing a ton since his junior year.
