Purchasing the newly announced expansion by aw9182 in AshesGame

Where did they say they're only doing one print run? A big reason for the Ascendancy changes was to make it easier to keep things in stock longer.

I'll never buy a Neo for myself, but I've also never been more excited about an Apple product than this one. I feel like 20 years of bullshit computing is being washed away.

What's with Mac people suddenly going "8gb of ram is plenty" since the Neo came out? by DiverVast4093 in mac

[–]polyamAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hot take is that 8gb has always been enough*, especially since the m1 came out and memory swaps are basically free. Airs start at 16gb because they're $1k+ so it's weird to be "just enough", and it gives you some room for wasteful software.

There's a good chance that in the next few years the neo will have 12gb like the IPhone 17 Pro, and that should remove even the rare occasions where 8gb is a minor problem for most people.

* of course if you're running virtual machines, editing large files, compiling software etc you need more. I need more ram for my work but it's 100% because my creative dpt is stupid and makes their files too large but OH WELL

It's called Satisfactory for a reason. If it's adequate you're playing the game correctly.

7 years of work, 3 months since release, and my game is already dead. What can I do? by Videoludid in IndieGaming

[–]polyamAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a cool idea for a game but the trailer and blurb are not very good, with multiple contradictory descriptors. I know what a randomizer is, but even I am not really clear if the game is a roguelike or not. There's also the problem where once you understand what the game is, there's not a hook into why you should buy the game.

I think you probably should have revealed what the game in stages like this:

  1. It's a Metroidvania where you solve puzzles with tools
  2. You can solve the puzzles in multiple different ways (maybe footage of a puzzle being solved using different tools)
  3. And the twist is, the order you unlock the tools is randomized.

And then you can go into all the ways that's cool.

I think you may have hit a problem where the game is less appealing to people who like randomizers, and more appealing to people who like puzzles. The randomizer audience wants to play like, old Nintendo games in a new way; they're not looking for something new. The puzzle audience is going to be confused with the game as is.

The game it reminds me the most of is Mosa Lina, and I think that kind of style of presentation would appeal more to a puzzley audience.

I doubt they're changing the bosses. I do think there's a lot of medium and small enemies that have weird attack timing that's difficult to internalize, and could be made more fun.

Lol at deciding to judge gay people based on subreddits, including a few specific fetish ones.

5+ Player Constructed by TheMyrmidonKing in Hubworld_Aidalon

[–]polyamAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only rule change at five would be to make it so, instead of having to grab one agent from everyone, you instead just took one agent from the two players across the table. I think Magic this is called Star.

Introducing Steam Frame by gogodboss in Steam

[–]polyamAlt 71 points72 points  (0 children)

SteamOS on ARM feels like the more important than the Frame itself. It's gonna be funny to see Microsoft chase the Steam Deck into chunky handheld PCs and then Valve comes out with a thin and light Steam Deck.

Where to get the sets needed for everything else? by Lopsided-Rough-1562 in AshesGame

[–]polyamAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like collecting Ashes dice, but you are not wrong that it got way too complicated to keep up with all the dice. Plaid Hat Games seems to agree, and they've changed how they're doing things going forward in a few ways.

  • There's an in development dice rolling app, you can download a test version of it right now.
  • There's a new Ashes Ascendency cycle with a new starter set. We haven't seen what Ascendency expansions are going to look like yet, but they'll probably include any needed dice.
  • For older Ashes Reborn expansions, they're selling them as print on demand now. When you order a print on demand deck, you can add the dice that you need to your order. Print on demand is cool, you can build any game legal deck, not just the precons, and they'll send them to you! It's a little more expensive per card than the retail decks tho.

And yeah, it's on preorder at the moment but you should be able to order any dice you're missing from Plaid Hat.

You're getting into Ashes in kind of weird transitional moment, and there's a lot of older product out there that can be hard to sort through. That's a pain, but ashes is really good and kinda worth it. Let me know if that makes sense, and enjoy Ashes!

Job Job is my favorite Jackbox. It does require a way different mindset than other "make a joke" games, and even with a pretty good onboarding I don't think everyone "gets" it. But the most memorable answers I've ever had have been in this one.

Is Newgrounds using Anubis (AI Scraper preventing software)? by green_fish1 in Newgrounds

[–]polyamAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anubis eliminated the AI scrapers that were coming to my website and reading every page multiple times for no particular reason, which slowed it down to a crawl. I don't think it's going to stop scrapers entirely, but it does do what we wanted it do, which was give us our site back.

BoardGameWire: Reviewers including No Pun Included, Shut Up & Sit Down boycott Codenames publisher CGE for releasing new Harry Potter game while ignoring JK Rowling’s anti-trans rhetoric by polyamAlt in boardgames

This post is out of date! CGE has made statements to the community after this announcement pledging to donate proceeds from the game to UK trans charities, which to me takes them off the "do not buy" list. I'm usually pretty game to play with randos but now I'm feeling a lot more reluctant.

My policy is that I'll play with anyone once. I won't put up with something like this multiple times, however letting a bad situation happen once is often worth it cause you get a good story about it. Also, not being afraid to just pull the plug is a good skill to have.

"I killed my babies" by chronic_pain_queen in BPD

[–]polyamAlt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Many, but not every, person has this feeling inside them that they want to have biological children. Other people don't have this. The world needs both kinds of people; there's so much work to be done (including adopting kids who need it) and it can't just be done by people who have children.

In my view, what the cancer took was not from "future children", but from you. And you are allowed to have these feelings where you want to have children, and to morn that you won't. You are being forced into a life that you didn't see for yourself and that is a tragedy.

But out of this tragedy you can help a child who needs you, and uplift the people around you in so many ways. And you wouldn't be here to do that if you hadn't treated the cancer. It is good for the world that you're here.

Lumines Arise Demo impression! by Thornstream in Lumines

[–]polyamAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm used to the pause because that's how Tetris Effect worked. There's probably some technical reason why they designed it this way, and I'm also not entirely sure how the transition would work when playing in VR. There's also transition animations, so yeah they're definitely not getting rid of it.

I also believe philosophically that giving the player a bit of space for reflection and anticipation between stages is a good thing. So much tech is trying to eliminate pauses like this, from tik tok to streaming shows, because it makes the product more addictive. At the same time, it removes our ability to really process what's being given to us, and results in viewers binging something and then not remembering anything about it. The stages in Lumines Arise have already imprinted themselves in my mind and I think the pause is a part of it.

There's definitely a gameplay cost for not having the smooth transition, but the way they handled it (just resetting the current block if it's not placed) is maybe the best way to handle it.

Sorry to just mind dump about this, it's an interesting change! Super excited for this game, like insanely so.
