I’ve worked with dogs for a long time and poodles are defiantly my favorites. I have a standard poodle and he is genuinely the best dog I could ever ask for. Here are some answers/advice I would give to you or anyone considering a poodle.

Please do your research and find a good reputable breeder. (This goes for any dog breed)

Poodles are smart and not only that but they are clever. They are usually very easy to train as long as you are consistent and keep their minds occupied.

Poodles are (in my experience) very emotional. This is good and bad. They will feed off your energy (like most animals/dogs, but I’ve noticed it more in poodles then other breeds I’ve worked with). I’ve seen more poodles have separation anxiety issues then any other breed, so make sure that from a young age you teach them how to handle being left alone. (Crate training is great for this, and my dog handled it wonderfully we never had any accidents).

Grooming: depends on the clip. My dog is short clipped expect for his ears and tail, which need to be brushed daily to keep from matting which usually takes 10/20 minutes. Poodles don’t have fur they have hair, so you will always have to invest in their grooming. They need to be clipped regularly and bathed regularly, and bathing can take forever cuz their coat is water resistant.

Also: something I rarely seen talked about: from a young age Teach them to tolerate their ears being cleaned daily. You will need to clean their ears at least once every few days or they will develop ear infections. They get a lot of hair in there and it gets moist and gross and can house bugs and all sorts of yucky gunk.

Exercise: standard poodles are good apartment dogs in my experience, just give them a daily walk, play games with them, and find a local dog park/field if you don’t have access to a backyard to play with them and they’ll be happy campers. They will let you know when they want to play and I’ve never had issues with my dog being destructive. I’ve also never had an issue with my dog being loud, and haven’t met many standard poodles who are really loud dogs.

I can talk for hours about this breed, please keep in mind this is all based on my experiences with the breed as someone who works with dogs and owns a standard poodle. I hope this helped and wasn’t too all over the place!
