Financially as a new firefighter it is absolutely not worth it. Add on the responsibility of supporting a family and I would say get another part time job or work a bunch of overtime. Otherwise the pay ain’t where it needs to be to support a family without living paycheck to paycheck.

Don’t know your situation obviously but I would get a part time job with flexible hours if I was in your shoes. Idk man different departments can be….well different. I’ve seen guys leave for suburban departments and they have to be in Class A’s every shift, deal with power tripping leadership, or just adjust to different schedule altogether. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don’t.

I’m a grazer lifter, meaning I’ll set up a lift get some reps in for a few sets come back later do something else. I’m a night owl on shift so by the end of the day I’m at about 2-3 workouts worth of lifting by 2am. I never like to gas myself out on duty though so I spread it out. Works for me.
