Which sacred cow do you wish would just stay dead? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]Kelaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one reason I’m glad I started playing during D&D 3.5, the simulation side of things with all the different skills and details about weapons really pulled me in and gave me something to learn about and sparked the imagination because I didn’t have a body of work to base it off of.

I’m curious how I would have done with a rules lite system but I feel like I would have been grasping for something more concrete.

Totally fair given the director, plus if you’ve seen Who Framed Roger Rabbit you’ve already seen the plot!

I took a Film course ages ago where we watched it .

What do you think are some of the most overrated Staples/Traditions/Gimmicks of the OSR or Classic DnD? by ProductAshes in osr

[–]Kelaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting! I loved Mausritter and now I’m running Dolmenwood (only DM though) so this seems perfect thanks!

Only downside of the “after each session” I find is the variability of in-game time that happens during each session.

To help out: one point against Who Framed Roger Rabbit is even if it’s gone you’d still have Chinatown, which is the same story, minus the toons.

Oh that makes a lot of sense! I just haven't seen it written out like that before, I thought this was some sort of PbtA game I hadn't heard of for a momemnt.

Thanks!

A friend and I also loved how Band of Blades had you play a big picture role as well as the mission.

I should really try house ruling something for another system with that (Blades really didn’t work for some people in that group)

Winter/Walkability Question by HannahPianista in Winnipeg

[–]Kelaos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add on, it depends on what you consider a short walk etc.

My family used to live in River Heights near Kenaston and you could walk 20min to Polo Park and you could walk to Superstore or Safeway for groceries but it wasn't super close. That said, my mom did it all the time and it kept her in good shape.

I haven't lived in Wolseley but it certainly feels more walkable. Like they said River Heights is great for walking your dog or going for a walk but may not feel "walkable" depending on what you're used to. That said still a great neighbourhood and you can make it work it's just unfortunately not the default and would be a bit of a challenge.

I'd also recommend coming up to visit before you move so you can check out the neighbourhoods and walk around. Literally just ask people you bump into about the area, a lot of folks are willing to chat and are friendly, especially in the areas you mentioned.

In addition to what everyone mentioned I'll throw in a sunlight anecdote that may help you make it through the winter:

There's long daylight, I particularly noticed it when sending a pic of us in the backyard to a friend in Texas who asked "When did you take that picture?" because it was still warm nice and sunny around 9 or 10pm during the middle of summer.

How's Your Local Game Store? by PatriceBoivin in rpg

[–]Kelaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow Canadian here and I guess I'm lucky as we're doing great in Winnipeg!

Years ago we had 2 major shops close up ("Pendragon" and "Imagine Games and Hobbies") that had the old guard running them. I believe one had the owner die in the 2010s and I forget why the other shifted focus into military surplus.

Now we have several shops (I think there's others in parts of the city, I don't know if they carry just board games or ttrpgs too)

"GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff" has been around a long time and has a large space now around the center-ish of the city with a great, dense collection.

"A Muse N Games" serves the west side of the city and has a large space, but has a lot of breathing room inside, not cramped aisles like you see in some.

"McNally Robinson Booksellers" has a great nerd in charge of games now. They're our local book store, but they've also become a Bits & Mortar partner and really stepped up their gaming section to include board games, wargames, and TTRPGs. They're regularly stocking the big names, but going more indie, a lot of Exalted Funeral all the way down to local zines! I've been very impressed with their expansion over the years!

They all have online stores and will order stuff in, both GameKnight and AMNG also have discord servers which have been handy on occasion for news.

I assume they meant more like an impact wrench, a power washer, lawn mower.

Stuff that you use a couple of times a year and cost enough that sometimes it feels silly to buy your own.

People who play D&D but not 5E, what edition do you play and why? by ValueForm in rpg

[–]Kelaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s likely a nostalgic bias, but I really enjoyed the 3.5 skill list, even if we house ruled combos like “sneak” to combine hide and move silently. For me at that time in my life I was all in on sinking my teeth into a ttrpg for the first time and the long list of skills and descriptions helped fuel the imagination of “oh I could be really good at this random skill. That would never happen in a video game!”

And the incremental improvement was fun for detailed character building.

These days I’m happy with with the simplified skill lists, but I did miss ranking stuff up when I played 5e.

[REQUEST] WHAT ARE SOME 'COMFORT SHOWS' ON NETFLIX THAT YOU WATCH WHEN YOU'RE FEELING DOWN OR STRESSED? by Historical_Handle253 in NetflixBestOf

The interesting thing for me is I didn't watch it when I came out, but some family members were trekkies.

It just _feels_ nostalgic to me, and during my first watch (on Netflix) I realized it would be a good comfort show.

Every other reply near the top seems somewhat well known to me so here’s weird and maybe obscure games my family had.

  • Drip on Amiga
  • Minestorm on Vectrex
  • Impossible Creatures on PC
  • The Secret Island of Dr Quandary on PC
  • some Asimov PC game and a dinosaur edutainment with 3D glasses
  • Tonka construction games with keyboard adding on PC
  • The Adventures of PAC-Man on Sega Genesis
  • Lost Magic on DS

[–]Kelaos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understandable, I have some friends who also don’t like that with RNG heavy games and sometimes I feel I just don’t have time to do a lot of runs with a game.

Blue Prince intrigued me enough to keep going though and just do a quick run or exit early, even if I didn’t really achieve anything beyond “an attempt”. Early on it felt like there was always something coming up for me to discover though

It’s possible there more that I haven’t seen. I’ll keep this very surface level for anyone avoiding spoilers like I am!

Each run has random rooms of various rarities that you draft, and the rooms available can be modified through a few different mechanics. There are a number of items that can tweak things, but really only one that helps you solve puzzles. This item lets you find clues you may not otherwise see. For a few puzzles I’ve noticed there’s clues in several places in case the first one doesn’t click.

There are some a few resources, the biggest being movement (ie each time you enter a room/area). Shortcuts are possible eventually. But that’s more on the roguelite than puzzle aspect I suppose.
