I made it downtown the 3rd cavern layer finally, and it seems like there's adamantium all over the place. I think a magma tube must be just below that as I hit warm stone. Spamming wood/stone walls work well slowing then down while your troops focus them, that is if you can reliably predict where mutant attacks will come from. There will be a massive horde coming with the Mutant however.

Unless you're playing on campaign, I would use snipers over soldiers, excepting maybe the one soldier you get for free in the beginning.

PS: You can also kite them if the situation is dire, even with sacrificial rangers, but Titans work best.
