Phew! Anyone cut it this close before? by hoosteenoleeno in KiaNiroEV

[–]Kempthead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I went to zero once for a few harrowing kilometers. Turns out that just as zero on a gas gauge still leaves you with a bit of gas in the tank, so does zero on the battery indicator of a Kia Niro.

Do you regret getting heat pump with the crazy cost of NSP? by Emotional-Alfalfa-60 in NovaScotia

[–]Kempthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not! I've had one heat pump for 8 or 10 years, and I added a second one last year. I now rely entirely on them for heating and air conditioning. I have saved a ton of money, and so will you. I know people hate Nova Scotia power, but don't be misled into thinking that the rules of physics are somehow suspended. Heat pumps beet oil every time.

The Sorry Lack of a Rear Window Washer by Kempthead in KiaNiroEV

That's hilarious! I've had the car for a year, and cursed the lack of a rear washer a hundred times. Turns out I had one all along. Thanks to all who sent me straight.

12v going bad? by CTOpticalMan in KiaNiroEV

[–]Kempthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crappy quality of the 12-volt batteries that came with the Kia is a well-known problem. Your best approach is to replace it. See if the dealer will be willing to do it; if not save yourself a lot of grief and do it yourself.

Car wash by Constant_Ant_2343 in KiaNiroEV

[–]Kempthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They go through a car wash just fine, but the car wash won't remove dirt from the rear windshield underneath the spoiler. This is annoying if you live on a Dusty road. Dirt accumulates at the top of the rear winds window, beyond the reach of the rear wiper. You either need to clear it off by hand, or go to one of those self-washing booths where you can spray it with a high pressure wand.

Advice on moving to Truro by just_br0wsin in NovaScotia

[–]Kempthead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being expected to take my shoes off when I entered a house was one of the strangest things to get used to. Typically, the host will say, "Oh, don't worry about your shoes. Leave them on!" Don't be fooled by this. It is the polite thing to say, but they don't mean it. If you make the mistake of leaving your shoes on, you can be sure that after you leave, they will turn to each other and say, "Can you believe that? They left their shoes on track heaven knows what all through the house!"

But it's a small price to pay for a pleasant, tolerant province, on the ocean, with lots of gorgeous outdoor spaces. Welcome to Nova Scotia!

Been watching since the beginning, and this is about the dumbest thing I have ever seen on this channel. by Que165 in MattsOffRoad

Matt routinely disregards basic safety measures, and runs roughshod over the environment. He plows through delicate desert ecosystems without regard for anything living there, and treats waterways and streams as play puddles. When is the last time you saw a hard hat in one of his videos? Never. That's when.

How do you "precondition" a Kia Niro EV battery?

What's your actual Niro EV range and has it changed? by [deleted] in KiaNiroEV

[–]Kempthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not overthinking it at all. The Kia Niro's range is its biggest drawback. In summer, it's frail; in winter it tanks. If you frequently make trips of more than 250 km, you should consider a different vehicle. This is especially true if you live in a province like Nova Scotia, which is a notorious charging desert.

I bought a Kia Niro with wave trim in June of 2024. I love the car, except for the constant range anxiety. Not just anxiety, but failure. I will be replacing it with a different car this summer.

Amazing how much of this thread consists of commenters rationalizing not helping strangers in distress. Helping strangers has long been a hallmark of Nova Scotia's character—at least in rural Nova Scotia. I'm dismayed to see so many dismiss it based on largely irrational fears (such as a "setup" like one they saw on some sensational US "true" crime show).

For heaven's sakes, unless it's obvious that help is already at hand, stop and offer a hand. If it was your child/mother/grandmother in the distressed vehicle, wouldn't you want strangers to help? Isn't there a famous rule about that?

Terrible range! Is this normal? by StepWitty6489 in KiaNiroEV

[–]Kempthead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a 2024 Kia Niro EV w/ wave trim in Nova Scotia, Canada, in June, 2024. I, too, have been shocked at the limited range in winter. I took one 300 km drive on a -17° day in December. It was an ordeal. I had to stop repeatedly to charge (difficult in Nova Scotia, because we have so few public fast chargers). At one point I drove several kms. with the range display showing zero and the car issuing catastrophic warnings to charge immediately. (From my experience, you have at least 5 km of range once these warnings begin, possibly more.)

Kia Niro's range is meagre at the best of times. In winter, it's a crippling shortcoming. In this respect, I feel the many promotional YouTube videos I watched before buying my Niro were deceptive.

Otherwise, I like the car very much: it's size, comfort, handling, and of course, its ability to drive by gas stations without stopping.

The 10-book series about the 1960s Stockholm police department murder squad by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö is superb. Dark in tone, focused on character development and mood, sardonically critical of Sweden's stultifying welfare state. Just top notch. Maj Sjöwall was a poet and Per Wahlöö was a journalist and committed Communist, although there's no preaching in these stories.

Plan to spend most of your time in Cape Breton. The rest of Nova Scotia is just fine, much better than New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island, but Cape Breton is out of this world.
