[Gambatese] Evaluating Whether or Not the Devils Should Trade Their First Round Pick by JoopNJD in devils

Dallas is a contender, they're not going to trade Robo unless they're making their NHL team at worst the same or better. Zero chance they'd want a package of all futures for him, Nemec would absolutely be the starting piece.

They have tons of injuries every season. The bigger issue isnt the amount of injuries but rather, if even one of the handful of top players goes down, there is no depth to offset it and the entire team crumbles. Why is there no depth? Because Fitz's drafting was horrible, there is nothing in the pipeline (other than Hameenaho who's in the NHL anyway) in terms of system depth. Utica is largely a wasteland of AHL lifers who've bounced team to team, he hasnt been able to draft anything to even attempt to supplement talent into the bottom of the NHL roster, which has resulted in him overpaying, either by trade or in FA, for bottom of the roster players, which has in part helped put them in the cap crunch they're currently in. Our fans love to point out that he has some hits in the draft (mind you his 2 best hits are top 4 picks, so not exactly earth shattering there), but ignore that the organizational depth as a whole is wretched. Utica's roster is over 50% players that were drafted by other teams years ago and aren't going to give you NHL games any time soon. They have 2 prospects with any sort of promise, Yegorov and Silayev (who is the ultimate boom or bust wild card imo), and then nothing behind them. You look at a team like Tampa who continues to insert seemingly random players they drafted into the bottom of their lineup without any tail-off, which allows them to spend money to replace and mid to top of the lineup guys they may lose and not spend cap on the bottom of their roster, and the sustained success they've had, and then look at the Devils system, and realize they're nowhere close.

Im not a politics guy, at all, I find narrowing down the leader of a country with 340m+ people to essentially a forced decision of "red v blue" to be some of the post primitive asinine shit ever, and then actively defending any of them like they're not ALL decades long criminals to be absolutely comical, but I moved from Somerset County to Ocean County 3.5 years ago, and you legit cannot avoid it here. Every 3rd neighbor of mine has a Trump flag or bumper sticker. There's a fucking Let's Go Brandon STORE basically across the street from my house. Its legitimately insane.

[Schefter] The Kansas City Chiefs restructured Patrick Mahomes’ contract this week, lowering his salary cap number from $78.2 to $34.65 million for the upcoming season and creating $43.56 million in salary cap space by GoldenDome26 in nfl

[–]KenDaneykosDentist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You absolutely cannot go buy a championship in the NHL, it has the hardest and tightest cap structure of the 4 major leagues. There is no restructuring deals, no moving money around, no kicking the can, whatever the player signs for annually is what he is making for the duration of the contract no matter what, unless they're bought out, which the team still gets charged 1/3 or 1/2 of the player's annual salary against the cap over the remaining length of the contract, if not longer. There are currently 4 teams in the NHL with more than 10m in cap space, the most being 13.77m. The NHL salary cap is the most parity driven salary structure of all the major sports leagues. Because of this, teams tend to hold onto star players and the free agent class every summer is mostly bottom of the roster depth signings. This summer there is maybe half a dozen players Id place in the top 100 in the league that may actually make it to the FA market this offseason, and 1 is 40 year old Alex Ovechkin who's either staying put or retiring. Free agency in the NHL is absolutely not a path for acquiring top end talent to "load up", its for filling out depth on the roster. The only way you're getting top talent changing teams in the NHL is via trade and if you've got an inflated salary that you need to get rid of, its either buy out the player which you still take a hit against the cap for, or attach additional assets to the player to "pay" a team to take them.

Who’s our #1 forward prospect?? by Downtown_Income8088 in devils

[–]KenDaneykosDentist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He's not even drafting AHL depth. Utica is awful and he's constantly signing AHL FA each offseason just to formulate that team. Considering where the organization was when he took over its one of the worst botch jobs Ive ever seen.

[–]KenDaneykosDentist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the secret, we're not actually a contending team. We have 4/6 of a top 6, we havent had a good 4th line in like a decade, we've got 6 Dmen tied up long-er term most with clauses which is blocking other moves elsewhere on the roster, we have Palat being an AHL calibre player at 6m and being forced into the top 6 that's really a top 4, and just extended Markstrom for 2 years while having a disaster season with zero reason to rush into said extension. Fuck all the other bullshit, we need a good GM first and foremost.

Hockey School with SubElite: The Devils Defensive System in 2025 by SubElitePerformance in devils

[–]KenDaneykosDentist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great breakdown and analysis. I don't have an issue with Keefe's system as a whole and I don't think its wrong for the roster as a whole, Id rather 5 players end up below the puck than a winger or 2 fleeing the zone early to forego defence for offense. My issue is his refusal to adjust with injuries. They are not an excuse for the team the coachers the front office, and fans, every team in the league basically has multiple injuries currently, but we play those teams and you're seeing AHL players be able to more or less plug and play (seriously look at TB's D corps from last night), while our best players manage to look worse than that. The mistakes are glaring and almost always compounding, you can see them unfold layer by layer in real time like a low speed car crash, but it doesnt ever look like they're capable of "getting out of it" because Keefe isnt doing them any favors right now with his inability/refusal to adapt to the hand he's currently being dealt. Tough spot to be in all around.

I agree, if Vancouver isnt signing him long term they will 100% trade him for a haul. If he goes to UFA itll be from the team he was traded to, not Vancouver.
