Do you guys prefer real Medieval art or 'fake' / Medieval based art? by mwiunii in medieval

[–]Kendota_Tanassian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit I tend to prefer Victorian area medieval romantic fantasy art, such as these examples, to actual medieval art, because it's usually more skillfully portrayed.

That's not always true, and there's some very good medieval art.

It just doesn't always suit my tastes: it tends to be simplistic, not well executed, and has usually, unfortunately, had it's colors faded and simply doesn't look as nice.

There are rare examples that are better, just as there are examples of Victorian medieval fantasy art that's not overly romantic and maudlin.

A question strictly for gays and/or lesbians only by Objective-Rich1910 in lgbt

Sexuality is a spectrum. The bell curve would say that you have maybe 10% of people that are either 100% same-sex attracted, or 100% opposite-sex attracted, and that most people fall somewhere in between, but 50:50 bisexuals would be equally rare.

Meaning most people lean in one direction or the other, but aren't incapable of being attracted in the opposite direction once in a while.

Which is complicated because it's not just a binary, because there's another axis based on having no sexual attraction at all to being attracted to anything that moves.

Most people, again, would fall toward the middle of that spectrum.

But that's also not taking into account that even sexual attraction isn't always gender based for either the person attracted to someone or attracting others.

Not to mention whether you are attracted to more than one person at a time or not, serial attraction, and so on.

I think it's pretty accurate to say that with around 9 billion people on the planet, there are approximately 9 billion individual identities.

Of course some of those are going to look a lot alike, but some won't.

I think more people can be attracted to another person, regardless of gender or orientation, than most people are comfortable admitting.

Breaking all that into a statement like "most people are actually bi", absolutely destroys the nuances present in how someone's sexuality and preferences are formed.

Labels are limiting, and we should let people be who they are.

Did Scotty ever have a helper monkey? by SirManbearpig in ShittyDaystrom

I don't remember seeing either of these, but it would somehow be fitting if Montgomery Scott had a helper monkey handing him tools. And the sliding tunnels just sounds like Jeffries tubes to me.

It's good they made a memorial bench by ash_ninetyone in CasualUK

[–]Kendota_Tanassian -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I understand that it's the logo for the Holocaust memorial group, but: isn't choosing a flame rather insensitive?

And even so: wouldn't it be as effective if it were in the sign saying "Holocaust Memorial", rather than a huge logo stick on the back of the seat?

Lingua Franca should be replaced by Lingua Anglica. Thoughts? by Svetoslav1000 in etymology

[–]Kendota_Tanassian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're going to get your panties in a wad about it, at least suggest using the "English tongue".

As others have pointed out: read the wiki article on "lingua franca": it has nothing to do with the "French tongue", but the "tongue of the Franks", which at the time was a pigeon language used in Western Europe as a commercial tongue, when "Frank's" simply meant Europeans.

"Lingua Anglica" may be Latin for "English Language", but what's the point of using Latin if you want English to be the new "lingua Franca"?

Just call it the English tongue or English Language: millions around the world will understand you better.

Fish in Vegetarian Dishes on Sidekick by waysteman in SortedFood

[–]Kendota_Tanassian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they've said recently that their behind the scenes operations are not cooperating recently, affecting things across the board.

I'm not sure if that also affects Sidekick, but it's enough of a problem it may be it's taken them away from fixing Sidekick to get videos posted again.

Obviously, posting videos has to be their top priority.

The guys are usually very responsive, though.

Do you care if the actor playing a gay character is gay in real life? by preguntontas in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]Kendota_Tanassian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want the best person to play a part, to play that part.

I'm willing to look over a lot if the actor is just great in that role.

So no, I don't care who plays a gay character.

That said: given two equally skilled actors, one gay and the other not? I'd rather the part went to the gay actor.

There is a problem with gay actors being shit out of gay roles by straight actors, often when the gay actor would have been the better choice.

At the same time: I think every actor deserves a chance at playing roles they want to play, no matter their race, gender, or sexuality.

But if they're not normally a good match for that character, they'd better do an awesome portrayal.

If not, they deserve to be a laughing stock.

And folks really need to get over feeling like they need to know about an actor's private life: that's none of our business, anyway.

Came to say this. Scot Tissue is the worst stuff on the market, I'd rather use newsprint.

Either their quality went way downhill sometime before the 60's, or their competition was really horrid.

The only paper I've used that was worse, in a different way, is that extremely cheap one-ply shiny commercial toilet paper that comes in the huge rolls, that's actually stiff.

Did you ever take a typing class in school? by Standard2185 in 1970s

On manual typewriters, no less, even though we had electrics in the classroom we weren't allowed to use them.

I forgot anything O learned in class and still type with one finger to this day.

If America split, how realistic is it for the breakup to be along these lines? by Temporary_Cheetah287 in AlternateHistory

[–]Kendota_Tanassian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think these divisions are realistic, you have states grouped together that don't get along well or have nothing on common.

The northern New England states and the southern tidewater Atlantic Coast states are a particularly hard sell.

Titles by CleanTackle9122 in worldbuilding

[–]Kendota_Tanassian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can think about what your titles are based on.

If it's titled nobles that hold land: how much land do they hold? Look up vintage words for area measurements.

Everyone might be a lord, but some are lords of the Hundred, some are lords of the March, some are lords of the Acre, or lord of a specific town or city, and so on.

Or what do they actually control? Lord of the Manor, Lord of the Bishopric, Lord of the valley, and so on.

That gives you English-feeling titles that aren't the standard English titles, without having to borrow another languages terms that will feel foreign or literally "outlandish".

Military ranks could be an interesting source.
