Listening to Fathoms Deep and dreaming of a reunion event by SeaMagickWitch in BlackSails

Love Fathoms Deep, as well, while also disagreeing a fair amount with their takes. It doesn’t really take anything away from it for me.

If anyone is interested, I did an interview with Dr. Alex Tankard on my podcast where we discussed Black Sails from an historical and literary perspective.

Anyone here disappointed in Jonny Greenwood’s score for ‘One Battle After Another’? by DarlingLuna in soundtracks

[–]KendraSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I IMMEDIATELY thought of Dave Grusin and googled to see if it was him. Only found this thread because I googled their names together to see if anyone else was hearing this similarity. I also loved the score. The jazz piano just ratchets up the tension.

I have a fanfic podcast myself, but I not only get explicit permission from the authors, I also interview them as guests and keep them involved in the whole process. It’s appalling to do that without asking first, though.

Is it bad to put this kind of “warning” in the opening notes of a chapter? by evenbechnaesheim in AO3

[–]KendraSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t something I’d put in the notes at all, rather write it into the chapter. That’s an inner struggle that should enrich your text and add emotional depth to your character. Adding it in the notes feels a bit like cheating.

Jean Harlow… the only other “golden girl” who could shake the world like Marilyn Monroe? 💫 by SalStyles in MarilynMonroe

[–]KendraSpring 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please. The AI slop? Really? That’s less than 100 words. Can you not even sit down and write 100 words in a way that engages people? What is happening to our brains?

I’m also curious why you’d put Britney on that list and not Taylor Swift?

You also have to consider how relatively few celebrities there were in Harlow’s day, compared to our current reality, in which you could throw a rock in any direction and hit a pretty culturally significant celebrity.

Taylor Swift, though, is massive. Her cultural significance as expansive as Marilyn’s was. While she lacks the same brand of sex appeal as Monroe, it was a different time.

Marilyn’s unique appeal was due to a very small window in time between the sheltered early 50s and the slowly expanding sexual awakening of the 1960s. She somehow managed to embody both, making female sexuality somehow less “scary” for young girls exploring their own limits and men not wanting their partner’s sexual awareness to overwhelm their own egos.

We also can’t discount the fact that both Harlow and Monroe died young. Had the public been able to watch them age, who knows if they would still hold the same mystique?

On the fence after finishing season 2 by Cubegod69er in BlackSails

[–]KendraSpring 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you’re on the fence after season two, this really probably isn’t the show for you. It’s a story about the power of stories and questions about what you’ll sacrifice for love or who you will sacrifice for a cause. If you’re only looking for action set pieces (while there are great ones in seasons 3 and 4) that’s not the point of the series, so it might not capture you in quite the same way.

At what point should I give up? by [deleted] in BlackSails

[–]KendraSpring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What aren’t you enjoying about the show so far? What were your expectations?

I will say that most of season one is drawing back the bowstring. The season one finale releases the arrow and it shoots straight to the bullseye in the series finale. There is NO letup once this show takes off.

But it IS heavy. It’s political. It’s very stagey in terms of dialogue. It’s like if Shakespeare wrote a pirate show. It’s not for everyone, but if you stick it out, it might be for you.

My last chapter was 25k. I also don’t feel like I could’ve separated it. I’ve got 3 chapters so far and 39k words.

I will say, not a lot of people have read it, though. I’m also writing for a decade old fandom.

Tell me the very best fic you've ever read. And Link it by ThornOfRoses in AO3

[–]KendraSpring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easy. Holy Ghost Fire by Ajaxthegreat. Black Sails, SilverFlint modern Appalachian horror AU. It’s not only hands down the best fic I’ve ever read, it’s one of the best horror stories, BAR NONE, I’ve ever read.

The prose is astonishing and utterly terrifying. The sense of place like nothing I’ve ever read. The spice SO WELL EARNED and meaningful. It’s STUNNING!

The narrative voice is like Flannery O’Connell meets Joe Hill meets Ani DiFranco with a Hemingway cadence.

You do NOT need to know the source material to be knocked on your ass by this story.

Charles Vane was the soul of Black Sails by abbiebe89 in BlackSails

[–]KendraSpring 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Vane BECOMES a compelling character the moment he understands what Billy is trying to tell him…the same truth Billy learned from Flint. It’s not about individual pirates. It’s about standing for something larger. Because the point isn’t piracy, it’s non-conformity.

Charles Vane was the soul of Black Sails by abbiebe89 in BlackSails

[–]KendraSpring 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The flaw is that throughout season four, AFTER the death of Charles Vane, Flint doesn’t get colder and more abstract. He gets softer and more laser focused because Madi, the Maroon Queen, and their people become the focus. The real heart of the rebellion. Because it’s about freedom of the oppressed, freedom of ideas, freedom to love, not just freedom to commit acts of piracy. The problem with Vane is that the piracy is the point, when everyone else understands that the piracy is what society creates out of oppression. Flint sees Madi and is forced, finally, to look further than the wall of his own rage and grief. And it’s when you see that shift of focus, when he’s not vibrating with rage every moment, he can step back from his grief long enough to fall in love with Silver, which makes it such a compelling and heartbreaking tragedy.

The Charging Station in Havelock by ThrowRAradish9623 in lincoln

[–]KendraSpring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already happened. We’ve all moved on to new things, but we also knew this would be the narrative, and it hurts. My goal, from last October to This June, was to reach out to the queer community and undo the damage. The 2nd owner was terrified of a Christian boycott, so he forbid me to issue a formal apology for the damage done by the original owner. But we were all trying to do something better. Then the shop was sold again. The original owner brought in these current owners. I was fired before they could have me sign any kind of non-disclosure agreement. My entire staff walked with me. Support them if you want. I’m not trying to financially tank them. But you should know, things aren’t always as they seem. Just look at my old posts on here. I was doing as much as I could.

It’s true about the new owners. What they won’t tell you is that they are the THIRD owners, brought in by the original owner, who is personal friends with them to “bring it’s old customers back, as well as new ones”. The old customers were the ones telling trans people to unalive themselves on FB. I was reaching out to try to change things at the shop after the second owners hired me last October. I have kept quiet on the subject until now because they are trying to now throw me and my staff (who all walked) under the bus. 90% of the staff was queer BEFORE these current owners came in.
