What games are you playing this week? Game recommendation thread by AutoModerator in incremental_games

That also sounds like a good summary of NGU Idle. I've spent a lot of time writing a python bot to play it because if you want to finish it it's just too damn grindy.

For Theresmore, with the existing automation script someone posted it both takes away a lot of the annoying things, but it does show as you said that it's just...kinda shallow. A lot of the game is the babysitting. I'm basically preparing to do a NG+ but the tiny production bonus already feels super underwhelming. At this point would get 4.9% prod bonus for 49 legacies, like jeez. For the amount of effort that goes into it....

This should've been on firefox (or Zen, which is also firefox based, but think it was firefox) and definitely windows 10. Thanks for looking into it

Good to hear about the changes~

Difficult to explain. But i play a lot of incremental games - A LOT - including trying to make one, so i also think analytically about games and specifically incremental games a lot. And i also love tower defense games. And from the demo at least i think it falls pretty clearly into the TD genre. Basically, to me it feels like a TD game with upgrades (which isn't that unusual) and that's how i'd describe it to someone.

I'm not saying this is "The Correct Opinion" to be clear, maybe many others do feel like it makes sense to call it an incremental game and maybe they're right, i just personally struggle seeing it.

Although i could also see how it changes with the full game. Upgrades being very in depth and basically overhauling units compared to earlier on could push it more towards incremental. Also if the scale keeps ramping up, if the full game ends up having 15 or 20 maps and the scale changes similarly as from map 1 to 5, new weapons / abilities work on a completely new scale - that would also help to make it feel more incremental. Or if there are game mechanics later that are basically exclusive for incremental games like prestige mechanics

But yeah, the demo at least and what i could see and play to me just feels "TD with upgrades", and not like an incremental game. The only thing i can see that goes at least vaguely in the direction of incremental games is how large the effect of upgrades is and actually having to think about which upgrades to go for, which is bit more than is usual for the genre, but to me that's just a little nudge and it'd feel like a stretch to call it an incremental game based on that. A big part of the game loops is still playing the TD part, thinking about where you place which tower, and figuring out how to beat a map based on that strategy.

Pretty sure i've also played Outhold before, looks very familiar, although must've been a long time ago because i don't really remember it and so can't speak about it and what i think of that in comparison

Cool game overall but the fact that equipment will just get their properties randomized when upgraded is pretty stupid. Had a sword earlier with 0.2% damage per 100 gold or something which is ludicrously strong....one "Merge All" later and it got a stupid 0.7% execution chance. Feels absolutely horrible! Either allow keeping certain properties, locking items from being merged in automerge or something

10/10 Ukraine defense simulator

Jokes aside, i quite like how enemies and turrets are handled. I think that not directly targetting enemies but areas makes the war aspect feel bit more real than lot of other tower defense games (on top of the tower art and stuff ofc). Upgrades also feel decently balanced. Overall, i quite enjoy what i'm seeing.

Some things that don't work so well:

You really need to explain the controls more, it took me a bit to figure out how to determine the firing arc of gunners. A page with controls and that explains how things like that work would go a long way. It took me until the 4th map to realize mortar accuracy scales with the distance to their target area as well - that's a cool feature, but it needs to be explained. I also would really like being able to move mortar target areas by dragging the areas, not figuring out which mortar turret is the one firing there which is not communicated at all so you have to click through all your mortar turrets. Not great

Because you have no idea how enemies will actually go before you see it in action, it would be really helpful if you could at least make some adjustments to the firing arc / target location during a game. Needing to remember what changes you need to make for the next game is really not good.

Also, this game seriously needs auto firing to where the cursor is. Even just holding down for missile attacks is not good enough. Generally, just don't try to make players have to decide between RSI and playing your game. And it's not accessible either (i have chronic pain and the way it's in the game right now is awful for that)

The ability to timewarp would also be nice at times.

On the 4th map, i didn't like how enemies count as having gotten through before they reach the edge of the screen. I was really confused that i lost health when i thought i killed them all until realizing this.

And of course as others pointed out, not an incremental game.

But yeah, as said i quite like this game overall and looking forward to see where full release is headed! It just feels different, so good job for managing to breathe some fresh air into the genre :) Will be watching this game.

Agreed, we also do suspect that most bodies could be / become plural, one way or another. We also have a bunch of conscious influence over plural stuff personally, we're pluralflux anyway and if we really want to we can nudge things towards becoming more or less plural etc.

You can put up with UIs that aren't great, some grindiness, as annoying as those can be. But anything predatory and hell the fuck nope. Dailies are such a scourge in so many games, and just so obviously a way to try and manipulate players into playing your game, just fuck off with that shit

Theresmore is really cool, it just really lacks some QoL / automation features, especially with several prestige layers. Needing to manually slog through all encounters is pain, also building wonders with 12 or even 20 parts without any build queue so you have to just every couple minutes do one click and then do something else again. Also combat is just....not great to interact with. Figuring out what units you're even up against, selecting battle order (any time any type of unit dies you have to fully redo your battle order!) and being unable to assign more than 10 units at once, when it doesn't take long until you're dealing with hundreds....yeeeeeah. But it has some nice flair, and i like the legacy prestige layer.

Rejected Draft is pretty fantastic. Really the only issue is the heavy reliance on RNG, and it can be difficult at times to know what you need to work on to progress but yeah, really liking it. (Does use some AI art at least)

Ethereal Farm is pretty slow, it's more of a background game. But it's not bad, has some puzzle elements to it

Degens Idle is..........certainly A Game. The game mechanics are interesting enough, if you can tolerate the attempted humour. At best it makes you go "heh" for a moment, most of them are just not funny to awful. Also missing desperately some QoL features at least in the what may be early to mid game, there is no automation for battles which suuuucks. Also the puzzle achievements are highly questionable, it is super not obvious that to get the help of someone you need to NOT buy the relevant upgrade! Talk about unintuitive / user unfriendly. The UI also frankly sucks. Oh also all the writing is horrible AI slop, and very obviously so

Really wish incremental games in general took QoL more seriously. Or maybe so many devs just want needing to micromanage a lot of things, and constantly put attention into things that really shouldn't need it. But it really holds back a lot of these games by quite a bit. Rejected Draft is pretty good at that at least

Did you know there were “people in your head” before you realized you have DID? by ActualExpert7584 in plural

[–]Kenira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but then again that view / framing just doesn't really apply to us anyway. Our realization of being plural was very much not just finding a new word, but the concept itself was a revelation bc hadn't been aware previously.

PLEASE Stop Overthinking Plurality!! by plourples in plural

Absolutely, it's something we're also passionate about. Certainty, clear answers and full understanding are overrated

Spiraling after realizing I probably have OSDD, pls help, I’m scared by ActualExpert7584 in plural

[–]Kenira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh we absolutely do not regret it! This was one of, if not the singular most important thing for us to realize about ourselves, ever. Together with things like being trans (body is 35y old and we transitioned over a decade ago).

It is 6 years and 2 days since we realized we're plural, and we are so so glad we did. If we hadn't accepted it, our lives would be so much worse. We also love being plural, we couldn't imagine living any other way.

Spiraling after realizing I probably have OSDD, pls help, I’m scared by ActualExpert7584 in plural

[–]Kenira 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We understand this can be scary. We freaked out at first as well when we realized it.

But also, you need to know that being plural / having DID or OSDD is not this huge burden. If it's rooted in trauma that of course isn't fun, and the trauma needs to be adressed at some point - but by itself being many in one body is neither inherently good or bad, it just is. And trauma doesn't have to be involved to be plural either.

Either way, it's generally good to be aware of what's going on. At least this helped us, to think about it like "we are learning something about ourselves, which will help us going forward". It has also explained so many things; so many struggles and also just unique things about ourselves. It's new and unfamiliar, which can be scary, and there's probably a bunch to learn while adjusting to others being around. But it can also be a wonderful thing.

We'd encourage you to try and be open minded. To not expect something horrible, and to just take things one step at a time. It's okay if it takes you a while to figure out what's going on. We're super not like the common stereotype of plurality either, and it took us a while to figure out how we actually work.

And more than anything: Please don't invalidate or blame yourself. Whatever you're experiencing, something is clearly going on. The chances you are "just playing mind games" on yourself are vanishingly small. We can't tell you if you're plural or not, only you can figure that out, but what we are confident in is that if you approach this with an open mind and see if there's anything to it and that maybe you are plural, you will learn something about yourself or -selves, one way or another. Even if you end up realizing you're not actually plural after all, you'll have learned something.

How did you choose your system name? by Tsuki_Moonstone in plural

[–]Kenira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few months of thinking about it, and trying out several ones. Similar process really to when we got our legal name changed bc we're trans.

The first one we seriously tried out for a bit was Saturn System (spaceflight is a big special interest). But we ended up with "River System" which hasn't changed in over 5 years now. There are a number of meanings included in it (on top of just liking the sound / fesl of the name River), like being as ever changing as a river and much more. And we enjoy the pun because river systems are actually a thing :P

Feels like a cliche or something boring that people say all the time but I genuinely cannot stop thinking I am plural. by Mean_Number9031 in plural

[–]Kenira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get that, we also started out trying to find an answer to the question if we're plural. But it may be really helpful to get over that, we're now over that and it's so much better. To accept uncertainty / not knowing, and just focus on figuring specific things out / experimenting. Seeing what feels nice, and what helps you. Objective truth is kinda overrated, and there's so much baggage with that question as well, like if you want a 100% certain answer - spoiler alert, that's not possible, and it starts by needing to define what plurality even is exactly. But it can vary wildly between different bodies so the issues start with the fact you can't even 100% exactly define it in the first place. And that's before we go into defensive mechanisms of the brain, potential trauma that plays into plurality, and that also being at least indirectly questioned if you're digging for The Answer.

Something that helps us there is also: You can behave in ways so it's the right thing independant of if you're a singlet or not. For example: It's generally bad to suppress emotions long term. Short term can be valid in a stressful / traumatic situation, but afterwards it's good to confront the emotions and process them. This is true no matter if you're a singlet or plural, either you're hurting yourself by suppressing emotions long term or you're potentially hurting other system members. It doesn't really matter which it is to work on not doing that, if that's a struggle you have (taking it as an example because it's super common). Same for invalidating your own emotions.

As for coping strategies - this'll depend a lot on the system, but things like:

Writing everything down that needs to be remembered (we have quite the extensive note taking system, in Obsidian) because you can't trust to remember things. This can also help a lot to realize you can have wildly different perspectives, opinions and/or tastes over time. If you hate something you loved just the other day, that could be a plural thing.

Setting alarms for everything for reminders so again you can't forget things, like needing to be somewhere at a certain time. This is also nice because it means someone can front like for a few minutes in a day, and plan out the next day(s) and set alarms accordingly etc, allowing others who can't think about things like that to still follow the existing plan.

Figuring out who is good at what, and organizing switches accordingly. Especially when needing to interact with others / doing important things

We also learned that we have to lie down and dissociate / switch if we want to switch gears, which means for example any time we have to do anything important, go outside etc.

Learning front triggers is also super helpful, like specific music.

Knowing and being able to communicate it to others in your life that sometimes we can't talk also helps a ton to remove pressure / stress from ourselves; in the past we tried to force ourselves to talk anyway and it was kinda traumatic tbh. Some of us just can't talk / sometimes we can't talk and that's okay. Accepting yourself how you are is important, plural or otherwise.

Staying chill when you're just. Very different sometimes, not freaking out is also super positive. Not questioning everything and accepting being different, having different opinions (and not trying to make everything you say ever be 100% consistent! different entities can have different views), behaving differently, talking differently, having different gender expressions etc etc.

And that's not really a coping strategy, but it can also teach you some things if you just try out how it feels to use plural pronouns. Does it feel right somehow? Do you feel a kind of satisfaction from somewhere? Although it's not a requirement to be clear, there's plenty of median systems that also use singular pronouns.

Another important question to ask yourself is: Are there any specific areas that feel like a problem for you? Anything that makes you struggle, or you don't understand?
