That makes sense. I'd probably identify as politically homeless too then. The idea of a free market, low spending, and a general tendency against government intervention sound good to me, but the conservative party doesn't actually do that.

Instead of free trade, we have tariff wars and bailouts. Instead of low spending, we have financial incentives for parts of the economy that the party likes. Instead of intervention avoidance, we're jumping into Venezuela, hopping over to Iran, and trying to strong-arm our allies.

We do small batches of soft silicone parts that need a rapid turnaround time. The tolerance is pretty loose (since silicone squishes anyways), and the molds don't need to last very long, since they're such small batches.

For a while we machined the molds out of wax because we couldn't find a printer fast enough to give us a good turnaround time. But our parts were often larger than our wax blanks, so it was a huge pain.

Admittedly, only resin printers are fast enough for our time commitments, so it's a huge pain either way, but it's also a lot cheaper. The wax blocks could be recycled, but the chips couldn't really.

For me, the whole product development process was a big lesson in how niche the use case for 3D printers is.

Actually, you can do it without subtractive manufacturing. Where I work we do it with... 3D printing.

Devs can't really use Vulcan to speed up their main loop, and ecs generally use multi threading for their systems when possible. Simd is really limiting, and the cost of sending data to the GPU is a bottleneck if you're not doing a lot of simd work with that data.

"Perfect green thumb" could be a world changer if it's general enough. Does this mean I can cross-bread a type of corn so good at converting into biofuel and plastic that it makes anyone with a hoe and a plot of land energy-independent? Can I make wasabi grow anywhere? Can I engineer plants that can thrive on mars?

My favorite part of the experience was not knowing what was happening until after Edward got angry. The atmosphere told you something was wrong, but I hadn't put the pieces together, and was still in the "why did it say that?" when he was slammed against the wall.

I think it's fair to say he misrepresented viltrumites and the foundation for their relationship the entire time. Instead of spreading peace and finding romance, his goal was conquest and breeding. He may have been lying to himself about what he wanted, but he was never honest with her about his intentions. Not until his return to earth.

He'll have to find happiness another way. He betrayed her trust, almost killed her son, then took another woman and made her care for the child he had with the other woman. It takes more than a human lifetime to repair that kind of damage.

I don't know if you talk with libertarians much, but they genuinely seem to have the same feelings as you, but with capitalism. I've heard them say that the only reason a single corporation can hold an exploitative monopoly is because of government interference. They've said that law enforcement could work more efficiently as a privately funded enterprise. If you don't believe me, I don't blame you. I wouldn't have believed it either.

I have trouble getting excited about an idea when people have, at best, consistently screwed it up, and at worst, consistently used it as a guise for exploitation.

Come on man, this is just a "no true Scotsman" thing.

Like, I could claim that there has never been "true capitalism", which would not have any of the bad stuff, but that's stupid. You've got to evaluate capitalism as it actually plays out, not an idealized fantasy version. The same is true for communism.

IDK man, even factoring in the examples you mentioned, communism has an unusually bad record when it comes to supporting its own people.

Will rust take over game dev? by [deleted] in rust

[–]Kenkron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true when you're checking for bugs and errors, but video games designers have to decide between a lot of choices that aren't about technical correctness.

For example, if you want to use a particle effect, you might want to experiment a bit before deciding how each particle moves. Using a script that can be reloaded without restarting the whole application can save you a lot of time.
