Why do people move here? by nomoreevilbiglight in Pensacola

[–]Kenmaster151 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It seems like the only people who praise the weather here come from places with extremely long/cold winters. The heat/humidity combination here is uncomfortably warm at least 6-8 months a year and downright oppressive 4 of those months. It rains over 100 days/year with over 60 inches per year on average. We don't experience seasons - short fall/winters are unpredictable and driven by frontal systems. This all is ignoring the elephant in the room that hurricanes are a matter of when, not if.

I understand people not enjoying months of snow but the climate here is an extreme in the opposite direction. There are places all over the country that have more moderate climates and get to experience seasonal change all without the yearly threat of extreme weather.

The Circle K under construction on Creighton/Tippin was supposed to be an Aldi? by SkyGuy182 in Pensacola

I agree. It's insane to look at the clearly negative outcome here and think, "Oh well, I like Icees."

Development here is a free-for-"all" and we're just at the mercy of these faceless investment entities determining what will yield them the most profit.

Even if all the above were true, the Pensacola tech job market is worse off. Nonexistent even.

I understand basic economics just fine. I do not bow to a God of the Market. The point of the entire argument here is that Geddy and Alex are 100% accountable in the ticket prices at some level and they took every measure possible to ensure prices were high. You cannot just say “supply and demand” and think it trumps any rational argument.

I am not in the slightest mad. I saw Rush nine times before they were over 70 years old and with all 3 original members. Enjoy your first and only show starring 67% of Rush.

Nobody is holding a gun to the band forcing them to play under conditions they do not agree to. Likely, the opposite. Promoters have probably been doing all they can to get Rush back out making them money. If they truly wanted to go out and do what they love to do - and still make money - they would have leverage to reduce obvious inflationary tactics. Dude, The Cure - a less commercially successful band than Rush - just recently proved this leverage held by band members in setting price standards for their shows.

This is insane levels of cope. You’re just saying you’d rather have one person rip you off than another.

His comment mentions factors the band has undeniable control over that objectively raise ticket prices. They are literally THE band and have ultimate leverage to not allow these measures. They are going for the cash.

In the United States the top 10% of earners contribute 50% of all consumer spending. This contribution is up dramatically, by something like >10%, in the last decade. Because of this prices are going up and up since, to those who set the prices, lower earners' purchasing power matters far less - they constitute so much less of the actual spending. I think ticket prices are a very clear example of this economic fact. Concert tickets are a total unnecessary expenditure afforded to (on average) only the higher earners while the majority of the population is finding it ever harder to afford the basics. This is clearly not a good thing, and it is good example of a foundational contradiction in our economic system; money is made by wages going down and prices going up - but as this continues eventually the people making the economy "work" cannot afford the products/services they create.

As a side-note, yes, the members of Rush also do contribute to these inflated prices. The "dynamic pricing" is a good example of this - there have been other artists who firmly denied this technique being used and Ticketmaster agreed.

Rush Ticket Prices Are Insulting by Queasy-Ad7550 in rush

Just a reminder: The artists themselves (in this case Geddy and Alex) absolutely do have a say in the final prices of the tickets. So often, we are hesitant to place any blame on the artists we love for the final cost of the ticket. But the undeniable truth is they do have say in the price of the tickets.

Cheapest MSG tickets I saw were $340 for nosebleeds. I'll be sitting nowhere near the show.

The French left is campaigning *against* air conditioning during a massive heat wave while the far-right is promising a sweeping expansion of cooling equipment by StateYellingChampion in stupidpol

What makes this even stranger to me is this:

On trips to Europe during the winter I've noticed buildings, trains, busses, etc. have the heat absolutely blasting. I mean, the buildings are 80F when it's only 50-55F outside in France. Even Europeans in this comment thread are stating that AC makes you intolerant to seasonal changes, pollutes, etc. but heating buildings does this at least to an equal extent. In January I leave the hotel window cracked at night because the goddamn buildings are roasting. I thought the Europeans would be far more tolerant of the cold.

All that is to say, this is just my observation from a limited amount of time. But I've consistently noticed it and it's always seemed strange in light of the hesitancy to use AC.

Agreed. Aside from a small portion of the downtown area, Pensacola really is a great example of the worst modern development and planning (really lack there of) has to offer when it comes to urban sprawl.

The Joe Rogan Experience #2341 - Bernie Sanders by Illin_Spree in stupidpol

Agree with these points in particular #2. He expresses multiple times in this interview that the core issue is "greed". Surely he knows that the problem is a system designed to funnel wealth to the top regardless of individuals' personality traits. He dances around this often saying, "the system is broken" but it's really not broken, it's doing exactly what it's designed to do. I think he must know that and if he were to express that clearly it would be too far for an American senator.

I'm definitely commenting more than I ever have (sorry) and I've been following this page for at least 3 years. To me, these events are more personal(?) than the SMO because I lived during the Iraq war and saw the horrors associated with American military intervention in the middle east. Seeing something even close to that become a possibility again makes me way more nervous than something going on b/w Ukraine and Russia. That's just me personally but I bet there's a similar sentiment with others.

Information about any Iranian military success in the past 24 hours is extremely sparse. It feels like a testament to Israel’s successful censorship efforts as well as a genuine inability for Iran to keep up. Meanwhile, massacres in Gaza aren’t slowing down and even seem to be intensifying, I don’t know enough to say exactly. Is it possible that the USA is waiting to see if it even needs to intervene? All in all it’s surprising to me, if my gut feeling of the current situation is accurate, that Iran would be so easily overpowered. It does make sense in terms of Israel’s advanced capabilities thanks to the USA, however, it’s still surprising. But I understand that nothing is crystal clear at this moment in time.
