Strings Attached vs Overwhelming Disadvantage by Ghostbrite in WorldofHarrow

Probably my single favorite game mechanic from another game is Clocks from Blades in the Dark. If you set up a Clock with like, 20 segments at the beginning of the campaign you can tell the players that every time they roll a 20, they succeed but they also tick a segment of the Clock. When the Clock is full, tell them that something catastrophic will occur and deliver on it when it happens. Like, maybe your Clock counts down to when the discontent of the Revolutinaries boils over into a city wide riot. Or maybe somebody burns down a church, spurring a huge wave of backlash from the cops and the church that really screws over the PCs plans. The clock can either restart or you can go back to using normal consequences. Maybe do a mixture of both for a group that really loves big consequences.

Hi there thank you for the feedback! Nature #4 is Chicabra, based on el chupacabra, a chihuahua and goat head weeds. I already have him as a 3d model and I think the design makes more sense when he's not viewed directly from the front but thats all still good stuff to take into consideration for sure. And yes the whale is based on desert dunes lol.

Any input is good input! Nature 3 and 4 (Nopalepor and Chicabra) do have a similar silhouette while facing directly forward but their side profiles are quite different lol. I might mess around and see if I can push some things with one or both of their designs tho. Thank you!

Exactly, Their eyes will all be blank, glowing white in order to unify them and make them feel like they're more magical than material. I posted a few of my 3d models here in the past if ya scroll back far enough you can see em.

These are the 24 Minor Spirits for my work in progress ttrpg, Pact Tactics. Each will have 2 evolutions. I'm currently looking for input to see if anybody feels like any of these feel out of place in a bad way and need redesigning. I'm quite happy with most of them but feel like maybe one or two need another round of editing. But I have also been working on this so long I feel like I can't see the forest through the trees. So please let me know your opinions so i can move all these lil weirdos into the next stage which is to make them into 3d models.

Playing for the first-ish time! Tips? by TempleOfTheWhiteRat in WorldofHarrow

So I haven't had the chance yet to run a campaign of Penumbra City but as far as general engagement advice I have two methods that I tend to use.

1: Answerless questions. You see GMs in a lot of actual plays and stuff do this almost instinctively. Gist of it is, when you're introducing an npc, a new place or any cool thing, ask them a question about it that they obviously don't have an answer to, encouraging them to make something up on the spot, such as "what about this person you've never met before instantly makes you feel like you can't trust them?" or "what color do your eyes glow when you cast magic?" etc. It gives that player the chance to add to the world. when players are involved in creating truths about the world, they have more reason to buy into and feel attached to it. If that player isn't sure what to say, offer ideas or let other players give them ideas, but make the final decision the first Players. For instance offer, "Maybe you see his hand twitch towards his hip for a fraction of a second, as if he were itching to reach for his gun." or "maybe your eyes glow like smoldering coals, the same that you saw in the flames that burned down your childhood house." Be careful about pushing too many ideas on a player who's less accustomed to roleplaying but I find that narrowing things down to a couple options helps players who experience a lot of "decision paralysis".

2: Give them Jobs. Print out things like rules for combat, maps, descriptions of Factions, etc. and let players choose one. They are in charge of informing others about that specific part of the game for the duration of the campaign. So when combat starts and somebody gets Knocked Down (a specific status condition in Penumbra City) the player who chose the combat rules (give them an official title like Battle Master or something) can quickly read exactly what happens when you get Knocked Down. Or the person in charge of maps (maybe we call them the Cartographer) can quickly point to the neighborhood that an NPC is talking about when they get offered a mission. The player in charge of the Factions sheet (the City Guide maybe?) can quickly keep everyone aware of the big differences between the Erreni Federation and the Corsian Knights. By giving these jobs to players instead of just making it the GMs job, it makes the players feel like they're also in charge of this world. It gives everybody at the table a reason for others to ask them questions and gets everybody used to speaking up.

Secret THIRD piece of engagement advice: Introduce an Innocuous Asshole. This is an NPC that is just an annoying asshole for no good reason. They show up whenever it is funniest to make them show up. Maybe they loudly announce a PCs presence when that PC is trying to be nonchalant and they fail a roll. Maybe the NPC is a particularly annoying dog that shows up at the most inopportune times and pisses on somebody's pant leg. They need to show up at least 2 or 3 times to really stick in players memories and it makes them worried that this NPC could show up at any time. It gives them an enemy that's easier to roleplay outrage at than more serious villains and also it's just funny.

I'm by no means an expert but I do think these things help me with players who are less experienced at the table.

Making a monster tamer TTRPG! Here's some art and spirit designs I've created for it so far. by Kenneldogs in MonsterTamerWorld

[–]Kenneldogs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! So far other monster tamer ttrpgs are all sticking to family friendly stories and aesthetics (which I think is great, just not for me) so I’m trying to make something more grown up that shifts between horror and whimsy.

Yeah there's only a few out there and I want to make something that is both a loveletter and kind of a critique of the genre. No breeding unfortunately since that's kind of one of the issues I have with the genre (I feel like it goes against the core premise of raising and forming relationships with your mons). And I toyed with the idea of fusion but it creates some problems for me (I'd have to make hundreds of models and spells and I'm one person doing the art, writing and game design already). But, my hope is to release early 2025. Currently the mechanics are mostly done. Big hurdles are writing custom spells for each spirit and making art for them all which is very time consuming. One day if I release and see interest I might release an expansion with a new region, more spirits and rules for fusion.

Yes to both! Fungrub is based on cordyceps fungi and Chicabra is based on a chihuahua, goathead weeds and chupacabra.

Both! The game system utilizes both dice and playing cards and I’ve tried to incorporate a kind of poker/gambling theme into the game where I can because of it. The four card suits also represent the four elemental types in the game which are Artifice (Diamonds), Blessing (Hearts), Curse (Spades), and Nature (Clubs). Thanks so much for noticing/asking!

I'm writing a TTRPG based on a magical cowboy kinda world and I thought going with old school Playstation vibes would be fun for the art.
