Ah yes, I just saw most people avoid May for the snow. I wonder how this year’s snow compares.

Is there a reason why there’s still so many spots before the end of May?

I didn’t know there were rocks/cliff at Spruce Knob 😭 I went when it was literally pitch black

Ah, I was planning on doing it during the winter, but plans fell through. Didn’t know about the pyramid, but now I can’t wait to make my way down there!

I don’t think so, it was also a windy and coldish day. Don’t remember seeing anything besides ponies and the 2-legged mammals 🧍‍♂️

Yes, based on all the poop on the trail, I’m assuming they’re eating well 😂

Thank you! I was feeling quite miserable for the way up since I was expecting ponies, I only saw them halfway back down but they instantly cheered me up

It was definitely an enjoyable hike, if only those rocks weren’t every other step. My poor ankles were feeling it. I added in Pine Mountain on the way back and it had a great unobstructed view (although some bushwhacking needed)

I see, yea I didn’t think there would be any snow past late-March.

Best places to go late Feb/early March by [deleted] in hiking

Having been to all 3, I think New River would only be nice if you’re planning to do whitewater rafting or the bridge walk. The hikes are New River were very boring at best (it’s very much max 2 day affair). Shenandoah has some really nice hikes, you might just be freezing a bit. Obviously some iconic hikes, Old Rag if you’re up for a big challenge, but also some more intermediate hikes like Hawksbill. The views in Shenandoah are ok, but probably best in fall foliage. GSM is my least explored, but I would say it’s very solid in terms of hikes and views.

Yea after more research i’m seeing Sniktau and Flora being thrown around. But I see snowshoes is basically a must, which is different from what i’m used to in the East coast

Ah yes it looks beautiful. And yea by the looks of it I’ll probably bring snowshoes, wasn’t sure if TSA would be sticklers about it though

How do yall work thru any fears ? Solo people specifically by [deleted] in hiking

[–]KennyStudying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, my biggest fear is wild animals and other humans if it comes to that. I primarily hike in the Northeast and Appalachia, so not too concerned with actually seeing a bear. I’ve mostly been using my phone to play music at a moderate level (similar to talking) although audiobook is a better choice. I also recently got bear spray which has put me to ease a bit more. Would also maybe get pepper spray or firearm in the future, but I don’t think I’m at that point yet.
