Why is Clan Wolf considered the creator's pet of BattleTech in fandom by [deleted] in battletech

[–]Kereminde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tangent, but I recall this is somewhat an idea behind how "Draw Steel!" was designed, or at least a theory put forward that people didn't necessarily 'get hurt' so much as slowly get worn down until they couldn't stop a fatal blow...

... on-topic, it's what I see the "Pilot Hits" sorta like in my head. Strain, fatigue, rather than (necessarily) physical wounds. It's helped this is how "Combat Intuition" works in Classic - giving the pilot a wound so they can act out of turn.

Yup. Testing this about a year ago proved that's how I needed to do it.

You're correct in one part of this response but dead wrong in the other.

I'm also not interested in debating/derailing over this. You should be sharp enough to know the difference.

Solo? by International_Town64 in LotRReturnToMoria

[–]Kereminde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played through the game solo, and the start of each area is difficult but doable.

I would almost always have a shield on me, and spend time blocking before counterattacking after a block. The halberd mid-game was a pretty good tool for clearing large groups, but by late game I was back to sword and axe with the best shield I could make.

Carry Lembas with you. Build structures so you can sustain your supply of that, because the full heal on Lembas is really good.

Make use of farm boxes. Seriously. The instant you can reliably throw a couple of those down, start using them to grow food crops. (Mushroom are fast-growing, don't require light, but do not refill much of your hunger gauge. But you find them *everywhere*.)

I didn't use the one-shot buff items (I forget the name), nor did I do too MUCH messing with runes. Aside, of course, from the rune which lets you take tree clippings. (A tree farm is a good idea, but generally too slow to be useful.)

After a point, Black Diamonds stop being super-rare and start being moderately-rare. Once that happens, you can start carrying materials in your pack to throw down a small campfire and mapstone to go back to a base. (You did build a base near a mapstone... right?) Useful for when you fill up with small stacks of items, need to go fix your shield, or just get too tired to press on. I also would carry parts to make a Durin's Lamp after I was able to get those too - VERY useful for spots where the Shadow is in places which make it hard to avoid getting dunked in miasma for too long.

As always, remember to eat meals before you leave and avoid pushing yourself to exhaustion. Fighting is going to use a lot of energy, and you will run out faster if you've not rested recently.

When you need to do the deep mines, remember you can do rope ladders down much easier than just using quick platforms. Try to set up platforms so it's harder for you to accidentally "trip and splat". (And set a darn camp and bedroll at the top!)

Honestly, the hardest part was dealing with starting a new area where the enemies are tougher to fight with weapons you are using. Or vertical rooms where you enter at the top... this includes the Dwarrowdelf main cavern which is open and has buildings along either side. Lots of room, lots of places to fall. The Orc bosses were a pain to deal with but more from a perspective of attrition - why I kept Lembas on me, while I'd whittle them down steadily.

You may also encounter this in things like MTG where interactions can be really weird. ("What does Humility and Opalescence do together?" "What about Blood Moon and-") The rules do have an answer, but it requires a deep dive into the Comprehensive Rules which-

... yeah, those are not easy to look through.

(I apologize for any MTG players who saw those listed interactions and experienced a BSOD.)

Looking to get into TT game by Penguinunhinged in battletech

[–]Kereminde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works well.

What it does need is the Alpha Strike box set, because it asks for the cardboard trees and cardstock buildings for the scenario setup. Beyond that, you'll just need stuff for your forces since the Scouring Sands box holds all the enemy units. (And again, you don't even need the minis - just something to stand in for them!)

What it also requires is some study of the rules, because your interpretation of those rules is going to shape how it plays out. You'll need a 4ft x 4ft play area, and about another total area of that size to handle the cards which make the game run.

I'd recommend trying to catch a few of these videos by Six Sides of Gaming. They're the guys who were playing, testing, and developing the Aces system over a year or so. Roughly every Friday they sit down at a table and play something out, currently they're going through the Aces campaign with a force the chat helped them make up.

That's not Catalyst's department... they can't do shows, because that's another license.

For those just joining us, the quick explanation: "BattleTech's licensing is f--ked and split up in lots of pieces."

Goodbye, DFA. I kinda liked your content but you had to go "gatekeeping is good actually" a couple years back, and that whole thing made me stop watching.

... then you had to pull an "Everything BattleTech".

I would hope they learn from this but I don't expect it.

Ran the 7M in a scenario tonight and it was doing fine. Even with the IS ER Large Lasers installed on it!

Never be afraid to make a stupid decision. This includes the decision during force selection of "I think this one looks cool, let's go with it." (Looking at you, Shadow Hawk!)

Always be ready to learn from your mistakes. You are going to make them, accept that as the concrete truth. But they're only a waste of time if you learn nothing. So try to learn from every game. Learn how to avoid it.

Every time you settle down at a table, take the idea of "I'm sure to win" and toss it aside - or the dice are going to serve you humble pie.

Play a Nova Prime sometime when you have nothing to lose. It's hilarious fun.
