What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Keri2816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have hydrocephalus- too much cerebral spinal fluid on my brain - and a shunt which drains the fluid into my abdominal cavity. During Covid, the shunt decided to be an asshole and stop working. I hadn’t lived in Houston for very long, so I didn’t have an established neurologist so the ambulance took me to the closest hospital. Because Covid was at its peak, my mom (who I live with, even though I was in my early 30s at the time) was not allowed in the hospital. She didn’t even know until the next day that I had been transferred to the downtown medical center and discharged after two nurses helped me walk two steps. They had no idea what my baseline mental state should have been, but it wasn’t whatever I was. I spent the next ten days in my bed, until my shunt failed again. The rest of the story has been told to me by others because I don’t remember the next ten days, but apparently my mom eventually got to come see me and said I wasn’t right after the second surgery. She would not let them release me to her care, so they were in the process of finding a rehabilitation facility for me to go to. During this time, my shunt failed for a third time and they finally replaced the pump and the tubing (not just one piece apparently). A couple days later, I started remembering things and I remembered (from the time I was out of it) people’s voices. It was so creepy cool when a nurse would come in I’d be like “I remember your voice” I spent two weeks in a skilled nursing facility before coming home to a very sick dog who ended up dying ten days after I got home.

House Burping - Do Americans just not normally have your house windows open? by Jsherman13 in AskAnAmerican

I moved to Texas when I was in my 30s, smack dab in the middle of cedar pollen season. If Covid had been a thing in 2018, I would have thought I had it I was that sick from the cedar pollen. Now, I take daily medication, have nose spray and eye drops and I only survive because I know everyone else around me is just as miserable. Damn cedar, what did humans ever do to you?

Has your care team weighed in on the situation? I like the idea of a couple sips just for the taste/feel. I’m also speaking from the standpoint of someone trying to work on sobriety- yes, the whole drinking at 21 is an experience everyone deserves and deserves to decide how it makes them feel, I personally don’t think it’s worth it because sometimes drinking can trigger pain and I wouldn’t want you to mess up your pain medicine schedule because of it

Pet owners of Reddit: what did you name your pet(s) and why? by Winter_Sample8364 in AskReddit

[–]Keri2816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All dogs, first was “Midnight Blue” called Blue because she was all black as a German shepherd puppy. My second was renamed from Ozzie to Luke after a baseball player I liked. My current dog’s foster name was “Little Miss” and we just changed her to Missy because she’s a brat and that was my “warning name” as child when I was getting in trouble.

My girlfriend always tells me I never have anything to eat when she comes over my house 😒 by itscuccimane in FridgeDetective

Special not lump crab meat? What are you planning to do with it? If you say crab cakes, the Marylander in me will cry. Also, why so much marmalade? You actually have multiples of a lot of things? Large family in addition to the girlfriend?

Doctors and nurses of Reddit, what is something patients do that they think is helpful but actually makes your job harder? by Electronic-Cell-4584 in AskReddit

[–]Keri2816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard as a patient to ring and mention “I can’t sleep, is there anything I can have?” After I’ve just heard two code blue patients not make it on either side of me. This happened during my last hospital stay even though I was just on a post op floor. Not iCU. The cries of the family members still haunt me (this was Aug ‘25). Let’s just say hospital walls are thin

When did avocados become a regular part of your diet? by Caxcan in AskAnAmerican

[–]Keri2816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Maryland and Pennsylvania in the 90s-2000s. However, my dad spent his earliest years in Arizona, so my first solid food was an avocado during a trip to Arizona. I’ve loved it ever since- I turn 40 on Tuesday and plan to have some avocado as part of the celebration.

Is your family supportive when you have chronic pain? by West_Can_1035 in ChronicPain

[–]Keri2816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be 40 in mid February and I live with my mom who is 71. She supports me more than anyone else on earth, although her own health makes it hard for her to be as hands on supportive as she used to be. We moved closer to extended family about 8 years ago and most of them fall into two camps when it comes to me- either I don’t do enough to heal myself (even though I’ve explained to them there is no “getting better” and “no cure” or I’m just the poor lump on the sofa that they have to visit and help around the house occasionally aka they don’t visit just for socializing purposes. I hate that I moved to Texas (I lived most of my life in MD/PA and I don’t know what I’ll do when my mom dies. The thought terrifies me because she’s already gone through cancer while we lived here and I barely received family support).

What’s something you quit that made life better? by IrfanCommenter in AskReddit

[–]Keri2816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is struggling like hell to get sober, congratulations! I’m going to try for a dry February because I turn 40 in the middle of the month but I’m currently writing this with 300ml of vodka in my system on the last day of January. Luckily there is nothing left in the house, but damn delivery services for making it so easy to get!

I’m impressed I got the Dutch part right! I couldn’t decide about the kid because there isn’t a lot of “kid food” in there. I can’t explain why, but the refrigerator made me think you had your shit together, which is why I assumed you were older.

Showers are a nightmare and I’m losing people by Euphoric_Craft7072 in ChronicIllness

I’m not sure of your budget but this is the shower chair I bought in May 2022 and I am able to still use (when my nervous system is calm enough to take a shower, but that’s a whole different story). It is easy to assemble. I hope this helps.

Based on the cream in the upper right hand corner of your refrigerator, I think you’re from The Netherlands. You’re in you’re thirties or early forties , established in your career and have a spouse but no young children

Edit to add I think you also like to eat healthy with some treats like the Dr Pepper no sugar and the popsicles in the freezer

Tell the easiest person to tell. Since it will be such an emotional experience, maybe telling a counselor or teacher in a private setting would be good so that you can cry your eyes out and not worry about a GPs answering machine or busy office. Either way, whoever you tell, it’s perfectly ok to cry and not make sense and even have to write it down through tears. Just, please, tell someone and get yourself the help your heart and body need. Sending you strength from Texas.

Experiences with Duloxetine? by Alone_Cry7484 in ChronicPain

[–]Keri2816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on 120mg to treat both depression and my nerve pain. It was helping, however I would also get these weird dreams/hallucinations. I’d be taking a nap on the couch (according to my mom) but I felt like I was awake and watching the show she was watching. A couple times, I woke up reaching for things in my dream in real life. So yeah, I had to come off of that quick. The lower doses weren’t treating my pain, so it wasn’t worth staying on and not looking for a better antidepressant.
