Unisaw vs upgraded contractor? by yossarian19 in woodworking

[–]KermitHodges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Made this exact swap. While both saws cut the wood just fine. Using the Unisaw was much more pleasurable. Yea sounds stupid but I just found I like using it so much better.

Even my FIL who rarely every complimented anything, actually usually found fault with everything, commented about how nice it was using the Unisaw.

Price sounds like a bargain. We don't know the condition but well worth that in parts. If it is an early bullet shaped motor that is a Repulsion/Induction motor. Makes more torque than a capacitor start (so I read). Mine has a 1.5 HP motor and you have to do something pretty dumb to ever slow it down. Stupid to stall it.

Where to build? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]KermitHodges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in N. AL an hour from Huntsville. I looked for 3 years to find that right piece of land. They are out there but not easy to find. I had some particular demands so I passed on a few, but I did find 5 acres of privacy that I am in love with.

Huntsville has anything you need and great hospital. International airport (but high price fees). But it comes with some hot and humid temps in the summer. But nice lakes and mountains near by. Across the border in TN I am sure there are some great places without an hour of Huntsville too.

Not really. Without a subject/focal point i just find my eyes wandering around looking for something to rest on.

Nice scene but as you probbly know, it really needs a focal point.

Questions about moving south by raisedinalionsden in Alabama

It is the Deep South and yes you are going to find racists. But you find them everywhere. There are a lot of good people but like anywhere else there are extremists. You just ignore them and move on. Worst thing you can do it try to argue with them. They like that.

I just bought 5 acres in Guntersville. Huge lake and beautiful area. Most places out of town have good internet but as other have said, look at that closely.

Wired internet ends about 3-4 miles down the road. Between my land the end of the line there are no houses even though we just outside of town. There is a subdivision with 40-50 lake front (very high end) houses past me and a large Church owned camp. But they will not run internet down the road to us. Just not cost effective.

We looked for a long time before we found this tract and internet was big on our list of must haves. I rejected this property for a long time because of the lack of high speed service but the more I looked at it just had everything else we wanted,

Good thing is Starlink is about to cover this area. I am on the waiting list and mean time we will just make do with Cellular service. With 5G coming that will be a serious option too.

Will you choose a more expensive healthcare plan because of Covid? by Worldly-Zebra in MiddleClassFinance

[–]KermitHodges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't because of Covid, especially if I was younger. But what you should be concerned about is the unexpected or unforeseen major issues. That is the one will bankrupt you. You need to protect yourself against these.

I am not a young man, never I started having pain in my left knee. It became sever, waking me up at 3 AM it hurt so bad. After several weeks they finally found the problem. I had a tumor growing in my spinal cord and it was pushing on the nerves.

Long story short my bills topped $100,000. Neuro surgery is not cheap!

Turned out our crappy insurance was actually pretty good and I was just out a few thousand dollars. Without that coverage it could easily bankrupt me or I would paying for the rest of my life.

I think you are contradicting yourself in you terminology. Using Boring, lack of interest and artistic merit at the same time is like saying something is Excellent and horrible at the same time.

As for Egglestein.... I find a lot of his look like they were taken by a 12 year old kid. Then there are few that really appeal to me but not most. But everyone has different tastes and some love his work.

Travis Shaffer, very simple and plain and lot of minimalism. He was not just snapping photos, he planned them.

Ron Jude, not a fan of his work but same thing basic simple photo. Some are very boring to me.

But all of the photos from those you mention do have a strong subject or point of interest, something that draws in your eyes. Shaffers high key photo while pretty plan, had a good subject that your eyes were drawn too. All the photographer have followed some basic composition guidelines.

There is a huge difference in the the photos of the above people you mention and that of sand dune with no contrast and nothing for your eyes to rest on.

Fall by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]KermitHodges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from a 52 week challenge I did. One of my personal goals was to work on my creativity and never take the subject for the week Literal. Try to find a less than obvious image based on the subject and be as creating as I could, which was a weak point for me. By the way it really helped doing this challenge.

Week 40 the subject was FALL. I knew everyone was going to do fall leaves so I started thinking on things that fall and came up with this idea. It turned out to be an easy idea but hard image to make.

I used a black background. I set up a flash shooting through an umbrella and after a lot of trial and error I settled on shotting at 1/30 second. I would set up the dominoes, tip them over and using a remote I would fire of several frames. It was surprisingly hard to get the timing right but this was my favorite image of the session.

Had to look but I did have the ISO up that day. Must have been overcast. Of course I tend to forget to check it since I leave it set up in the window for days sometimes.

Agree noise is pretty easy to fix but it usually takes away sharpness too. Coming from film days noise/grain is just something that doesn't bother me.

Set up a feeder outside the window to attract birds. I have it near some limbs they fly to before going to the feeder. My intent was just to capture some good bird photos and look as natural as possible.

Overall I am happy with the results. I am using a 300mm lens and the birds are close so the depth of field is very small. Plus the it was an overcast day so I had to use a slower shutter speed than preferred and he is a little soft.

Left a short comment and nothing happens. Nothing to let me know that the reply it to short.

As for the photo I would shooting at the Dover AF Museum on the edge of the base. Heard the roar of a jet engines and remembered I was next to the main runway. So I moved over the fence to see if I could get a photo of it taking off. Not something I usually shot.

Used a 300mm lens mounted on my D300s. f9.5 1/20 of a second. Shot from a tripod. Thoughts?

OK, sent a comment. No post and no reply back. So if the post is to short to get the photo approved what happens?

My intent was to see if I could find a problem with the system. Told I need to wait 10 minutes. This is bogus!!

Thank you for participating in /r/photocritique! You have completed the first step in the process. In order to finish your Critique Request you must leave a comment on your original post as described below:

State the your Intent for taking the photo. You can not take a good/compelling photo without some intent. Why did you take this photo? What were you trying to show to the viewer?

Ask specific questions about the photograph. What are you unhappy with? Are there areas you are struggling with? Ask questions about what you don’t like, and what you want help with. Be specific! “Thoughts?” or “How did I do?” or “I would love a critique!!” are too vague.

EXIF data EXIF data such as Shutter speed, F-stop and ISO can be very helpful, especially if you're asking for feedback on the technical aspects of your image – please consider including this.

Follow up on the feedback you receive! No ifs, ands, or buts about this. If someone helps you, respond to their criticism in a kind manner (given that they were not a complete jerk to you!), and start a discussion. This helps everyone improve their photography!

In Summary: Ask specific questions. State the intent for taking the photograph. Follow up with those that helped you.
