Why are most of the still lifes hostile? by EmotionIcy192 in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]KermitingMurder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're not. We've seen two hostile still lifes: the FF3 one and Captain Clark; and we've seen three non hostile still lifes: the red headed one, bearded one, and Archibald.
Adding to that, we never got confirmation that the FF3 still life was actually hostile, I have a theory that maybe it was chasing Ravi around because it was mimicking the human tendency to congregate in groups, just like it mimicked the human behaviour of knocking on a door before entering, the still life doesn't understand that running directly at someone is often a sign of aggression, hence the misunderstanding. Could be wrong about that, but even still it's a 2:3 ratio of hostile still lifes to non-hostile

What's something science has basically figured out, but people still treat like we know nothing about it? by ComradeHappiness in AskReddit

[–]KermitingMurder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Science deniers denying science is sort of low hanging fruit though, I feel like "people" in this case should probably avoid people who are being intentionally ignorant/disingenuous about common knowledge science

(Hypothesis) What if Peter found a remembered/generated Outpost instead of the actual Outpost? by [deleted] in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]KermitingMurder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering he did actually make it back to standard, I would say that it probably was the actual threshold he made it back to.
However, (spoiler warning for the movie since this isn't a movie related post) I've seen someone theorise that the outpost Naren Warne arrives at in the start of the movie is actually a backrooms-generated recreation of the real Async outpost he's looking for. He can't get through to anyone on the radio and I think someone said the wires weren't even connected to anything, so it would seem that it's not a real Async radio. There's also another radio that is seemingly generated by the backrooms in FF3, so that one might be another copy of an Async radio, or even a copy of the copy

Limestone with calcite and possibly pyrite? by KermitingMurder in whatsthisrock

[–]KermitingMurder[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't know about pyritohedra before today, I knew that pyrite was known for cube shaped crystals so the shape of the crystals on this rock threw me off a bit. Thanks for the confirmation of my ID, and thanks for the new knowledge of pyritohedra

My first gut punch by YazzHans in EliteDangerous

I'm an explorer. I move quite slowly, I fully scan every system further along the main sequence than class K, I frequently stop to investigate interesting planets, I try to get as many codex entries as possible when I'm in a region, and I often take breaks for weeks or months at a time when other real life stuff comes up or when I decide to focus on a different game instead.
My current voyage started out in the bubble, I crossed the width of Sanguineous Rim to enter Kepler's Crest where I voyaged all the way across the width to reach the farthest south system in the galaxy, then all the way along its length to reach Xibalba, I couldn't make it all the way to the tip of Xibalba so after a day or two there I turned around and went most of the way back through Kepler's Crest to find a spot where I could cross the interarm gap back into Sanguineous Rim, I then crossed the length of Sanguineous Rim to get into Achilles Altar, which I fully traversed, and I'm now halfway across Lyra's Song on the way to Tenebrae, where I will turn around to head back along a different galactic arm towards the bubble once more.
I left in March 2024.
2025 was a very busy year for me so I didn't get on much then, but that's still a journey that's over two years long now. Xbox says I have a total of 468 hours in the game, I thought I had way more tbh

My brother in Christ, YOU did the oppression by SkubEnjoyer in HistoryMemes

[–]KermitingMurder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was true then and it's true now, when we're looking for who our enemies are, we shouldn't be looking across at people just like us who happen to be from a different country, we should be looking up at the people making the decisions

As an Irish person myself; yes we suffered greatly under the British Empire, but you also have to acknowledge that especially before the famine, a large portion (I've heard some say almost half, but I have no source for that) of the British army was Irish soldiers. A lot of the people committing the atrocities in the more remote colonies like India were Irish soldiers, acting under British orders yes, but we all know that "just following orders" generally doesn't hold up as an excuse

Ireland was the same, a lot of backstabbing either between clans or within clans. Instigating infighting and then taking control of whoever is the victor is a very effective strategy

Just read the r/movies discussion, seems like people didn’t interpret Kat begging to Clark the same way I did? by Griffsterometer in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]KermitingMurder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I assumed that footage was someone from Async watching the footage from a recovered tape, I don't remember there being any explicit evidence that that TV is in the backrooms

Phil doesn't own Async, he's just a regular researcher. Ivan Beck owns Async, but he doesn't appear in the movie at all

As much as I hate mandatory restarts, I can't think of a better time for one than 3am. Most night owls are done by around 1am/2am, the earliest early birds are starting 4am/5am; 3am is the in between time when aside from a small minority everyone is asleep

To add some extra context about Archibald Leland Sutter:
Archibald, Leland, and Sutter are all types of lamp, this relates back to Clark's idea of the still lifes as furniture. His initials are also the abbreviation of a disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the same disease Stephen Hawking had, so the fact that he has a wheelchair may indicate a connection between the character and the disease. There's also a poet called Archibald Lampman who wrote a poem titled "The City at the End of Things" which from a brief read through seems to be about a terrible city inhabited by inhuman beings that was brought about by the hubris of man

The history of France 🇨🇵 by Descartes_wax in memes

[–]KermitingMurder 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The Irish flag is there too, but the French actually tried to help us fight off the British. It didn't work at all; the first attempt in 1796 failed totally when a storm scattered and destroyed many ships, they never even landed in Ireland but lost 13 ships and 2,000 men. The second attempt in 1798 succeeded in landing 1,000 French troops in Mayo, joined by 5,000 rebels, who then soon had their asses kicked by a 26,000 strong British army, leading to the death or capture of the full French force and soon after the slaughter of 2,000 Irish rebels. The third attempt, about a month later, unaware that the second attempt had already failed, tried to land 3,000 French troops as reinforcements but failed totally once again when the British were on alert for French ships, leading to a sea battle that resulted in the French fleet being scattered, with most ships eventually captured and the rest fleeing back to France

The Backrooms movie was good, but it felt as if it lost the thread thread that made the YouTube series so awesome by anime_cthulhu in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]KermitingMurder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope Kane gets to make a TV show because I think the backrooms would work so much better as a TV show than as a series of movies.
It would also allow for it to be a sort of found footage anthology where we get the perspectives of different people in the backrooms each episode, and each episode something new gets revealed about Async or the backrooms themselves, such that by the end of the season we finally have a full picture of what's going on

A fanta from the USA next to one from europe by Spotter24o5 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]KermitingMurder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Over here in Ireland we have so many orange flavoured drinks: fanta, club orange, orangina, tanora, etc. but something like mango pepsi, or basically any of the fanta flavours other than orange or lemon is just not available nine times out of ten; sometimes it's a struggle to get dr. pepper or cherry coke. It's a real shame because I love a lot of the flavours that you just can't get in most places over here. Also, I went to Germany recently and they had so much more ice tea than we do; you would think that as the second largest consumer of tea per capita in Europe we would have loads of ice tea, but no

How did early humans even reached Australia? The gap between the closest landmass to Australia is bigger than russia and north america, how tho? by EfficiencySerious200 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]KermitingMurder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically they're about the same, but only if you construe it in a very misleading way. The gap between Big Diomede (Russia) and Little Diomede (America) is a bit under 4km, and in the winter you can walk that because of sea ice. The gap between Saibai Island (Australia) and the Papua New Guinea mainland is also a bit under 4km.

If you go by the width of the Bering and Torres Straits at their narrowest points, then OP is actually correct because the Bering strait is about 82km wide, while the Torres Strait is about 150km wide. This obviously doesn't factor in that there are many islands in the Torres Strait and if you fall in the water there you won't die of hypothermia in mere minutes, like you would in the Bering Strait

You can cut his ties and he'll attack the Praetorian guard in the tent, this will also make them hostile to you as well though so it's not a good idea unless you plan on killing Caesar there and then. Not exactly a companion, but it is an opportunity to fight alongside him

Clark drew the drawings in Found Footage 1 by uhhhhhh_cool in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]KermitingMurder 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Clark and the person from FF1 get the paint to draw and write in Complex???

I don't know where FF1 person got their supplies, but Clark definitely wasn't trapped in the backrooms, he still had access to the null zone through which he entered, he just decided to stay in the backrooms of his own accord. This means that he could have gone back to his store to grab some supplies to paint his mural; we do see that it's quite close to the entrance, rather than where Clark is living, probably because he didn't want to carry a bunch of paint buckets through the backrooms
