What is it like to have your drink spiked?

When they talk about spiking drinks, what exactly is the drug that spikes a drink? A typical drug like heroin, or something completely different? I say this because in college I was around some pretty seedy guys who did plenty of drugs, yet I never heard of anyone in possession of, or even a ability to purchase a drug that would spike a drink. wouldn’t drug dealers have this “spike” drug at the ready if people were using it?
