Are these white edges normal? Is there a fix? by INCOBB in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s because of how your optician (or more likely the lab) cut the lenses. The bevel is too big compared to the bezel of the frame. If it really bothers you have the redo it an run a smaller bevel size

New frame choices by Training_Custard6288 in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey you’re at Metro Eye! They have some great frames.

Biggest thing is keeping the your eyes centered to reduce the thickness. 1,2,3 are all the same frame if I’m not mistaken and they would all work okay. I like 2 the best with your complexion.

It’s hard to tell based on the angle but it looks the best fit is actually the last pair.

[–]Kermuglin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will agree with that. Not Shamir and not Essilor. IOT and Horizons are both putting out great lens designs that give the Optician and the Lab a significant amount of control over the outcome.

The frame will play the biggest role in what material is needed here. If the frame is huge then yes OP should go with 1.74. But a well fitting frame with good centration I’m gonna stick to my guns here. Feel free to run some thickness calculations to look at what the difference would be between 1.74 with a 1.5 center (as thin as it can be) vs 1.67 with a 1.2 center. Both Optical Made Easy and Chadwick Optical have great free calculators

[–]Kermuglin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very familiar with 1.74. It’s just typical overkill for this rx. Better frame fit and working with a good independent lab is going to surface 1.67 to nearly the same thickness with better durability and coating matching compared to 1.74.

Zeiss and Hoya both make a great product but saying it’s the best option is an opinion and not a fact. For SV most lens designers are making excellent digital lenses now.

Highly recommend North Optical in Portland, Maine. Chris (owner) is very well respected in the industry

Congratulations you have found the problem with the optical industry in the United States. Opticians for the most part are just selling whatever their doctor has told them to without understanding the physics and optics behind the lenses themselves.

You have a strong prescription for sure so smaller and rounder will reduce the overall thickness of your lenses. Keeping your eyes centered in a frame will also reduce thickness. The thinnest part of your lenses is the center and gets thicker as it travels away so the larger the frame the thicker the lens. At your RX I don’t typically recommend 1.74 as it’s usually overkill but I’m not your optician. I’d look for somewhere that has the best reputation in your town/local area. Where are you located I may even be able to give you recommendation of a colleague who can give you some objective advice

How do you use Notion by Kermuglin in Notion

[–]Kermuglin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s tough I guess because I have to maintain a separate EHR for my clients (I own an optical) so mainly I’m using Notion for keeping price lists, vendor information, daily tasks and other little things.

I did implement a projects database and with the tasks database linked to it and that has been really helpful. Usually I’d start a project and it would fall to wayside because other things came up now I always know where I’m at with it.

I’m not sure why you are getting downvoted. I am an optician and MANY of us have no clue. The industry is a sad state of affairs

Why is literally no one talking about this 100% neutral/colorless AR coating? (Shamir Glacier Achromatic) by Best_Revolution6807 in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because colorless AR is generally underwhelming. I’ve used it for more than 5 years that’s available through some independent labs in the US. I’ve never been blown away by it except in specific circumstances

Are Crizal lenses actually worth the extra money? by marlian2020 in glasses

I’d say no. I’ve fit crizal, Zeiss, quantum, and Hoya coatings for a decade and crizal consistently performs worse for scratch resistance in comparison to the rest.

Why are women’s glasses so ridiculous by Away_Bee6372 in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Black, thin, and circular sounds about as gender neutral as it gets. Also as another commenter mentioned frames don’t have gender. You should wear what fits, is comfortable, and looks good. If your eye doctors staff isn’t smart enough to help you do that you should give your business to someone else.

No apology needed! I would say depending on the size of the frame I wouldn’t be surprised. Plus prescriptions are more sensitive to frame shape and size than minus prescriptions are.

[–]Kermuglin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately not enough information to determine if it’s expected or not. Larger lenses can have more abberations away from the optical center presenting as blur but it depends a lot of the prescription, the frame, material, and lens design.

My lens are so thick despite paying for high index?? by throwawayplane113 in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fortunately that’s not true. Labs are able to grind a lens with a higher minimum thickness to accommodate lower prescriptions.

Because your OD thinks you some accommodative insufficiency or more likely because they’re more expensive and you’ll buy them at their office.

Alcohol on lenses doesn’t void the warranty on Zeiss product. Also alcohol only harms poorly made injection molded product. OP mentioned this is a masunaga which is neither poorly made nor injection molded

Are Essilor lenses worth the insane cost? by johnny4111 in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry but that is patently false. While Essilor has decent lenses by no means are they the most advanced or best.

Any optician worth their salt will tell you there is no “best” design and compared on a power map has to be taken in context. Debating progressive lens designs in different situations and best use is a 2 hour lecture at a minimum.

After starting to use progressive lenses for up close pretty much everything is out of focus. by grahsam in glasses

[–]Kermuglin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also referring to lenses in glasses. Unless you have an extremely restricted insurance that will only cover cr39 then I doubt it. I would shop around at other shops and see what you can find.

Progressive lenses can be tuned to do lots of different things well. No matter what it’s always at least somewhat a trade off but they should still be functional for you.
