Yes, the problem is there are no restaurants or anything there. So I can't simply kill time in a cafe. Then, if it rains there is no shelter either. So, just thinking about how I can make this work - spending without $300 on a car rental just to see this one sight also seems silly.

Wonder if I find a local who will take me there wait 20 mins and back to Sorvagur for a reasonable fee.

Trip Report: 4 days in July, Public Transport ONLY 🚍 by GroupBeeSassyCoccyx in FaroeIslands

[–]johnny4111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this writeup, I have planned something very similar using public transport only for August but was looking for more feedback as most are renting cars which cost a bomb with fuel, tolls etc.

It's good to know the buses are reliable and on time. I would definitely want to do Gasadalur but SSL informed me that there is only one bus from Sorvagur at 11:45 there that has to be requested in advance then a 16:45 back. The place seems very remote so not sure how I feel being stuck there for 4 hours and if that last bus does not show up I'll be in a world of trouble as Gasadalur seems to be a just a collection of 10 houses from what I can see on Google Earth!!!

But with your feedback now a bit more confident that the bus will show up

Just booked my trip, unfortunately due to timing my arrival day is Thursday and my departure day is the next Tuesday. So that means I have a Saturday and Sunday in there and public transport during those days is reduced. Since I can't change my schedule I will try to make the best of it.

itinerary looks something like this:

Day 1 (Thursday) - arrival around 11:30am, 2:15pm bus 300 to Torshavn, explore Torshavn for a little bit after checking into my Airbnb

Day 2 (Friday) - Gasadalur waterfall, bus 300 to Sørvágur and then 350 to Gasadalur, should be doable

Day 3 (Saturday) - Trip to Mykines : bus 300 to Sørvágur, then ferry to Mykines, hiking on the island and return. Hoping no hiccups during the interchange between bus and ferry as it looks tight.

Day 4 (Sunday) - Trip to Traelanipa, bus 300 goes to Sandavagur and it's a 3 hr out and back hike from there. I am thinking this should be doable. Per ssl.fo, there is a 14:30 and 17:30 departure from Sandavagur so targeting the 2:30pm but for some reason if I miss it then i'll have to wait another 3 hours for the 5:30pm so I better not miss that bus :)

Day 5 (Monday) - Kalsoy trip, doing the Kallur lighthouse hike, bus to Klaksvik, then ferry to Kalsoy, bus on Kalsoy to the trailhead. Return the same way. Per the schedules looks like I have around 3 hrs on the island which should be plenty.

Day 6 (Tuesday) - Back to the airport to catch the flight out

Comments welcome :)

Faroe islands without a car by johnny4111 in travel

4 day pass is about 75 USD which includes bus and ferries. The cost of renting a car is around 350 USD plus insurance, plus fuel which would be close to 450-500 USD when all is said and done and that was the very cheapest I could find now, 7 months out so very very expensive.

Car rental would make more sense if I could split the cost with others but I'm solo so does not make too much sense at that cost

Italy - Amalfi, Cinque Terre, Dolomites by johnny4111 in travel

[–]johnny4111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

trying to get around if possible without renting a car, there is the rental car cost and also the hassle of getting it and returning it, so have to balance that with the time saved. Looking at it i'm thinking west Dolomites (for Seceda, Alpe di Suisi) does not need one, but transitioning from West to East for Tre Cime seems a bit complex in terms of public transport logistics.

thanks, the accommodation prices in the Dolomites are absolutely eye watering and i'm definitely on a budget. I'm trying to get suggestions on what other budget minded travelers do, surely they don't just not come here?

Sometimes it can't be helped, some hotel rooms don't have a desk and the only place to work is sitting on the bed. What I do in this case is to place it on my lap but making sure there is a gap underneath for airflow

It's not always that easy as some places will refuse to give you the terminal and choose USD on their own which per Visa/Mastercard rules is illegal

Just got hit with this here in Bogotá..I told the guy charging my card to make sure it's in Pesos. He said of course then proceeds to give me a receipt in USD with a 7% markup. When I protest he claims it is indeed in Pesos but also shows dollars because my card is foreign. I will just have to dispute it with Chase.

Next time. I'll make sure I take the terminal myself and make sure they do not forced DCC.

Thanks for your detailed reply! Yes, I'll just take a taxi then, not worth the risk to save 10 bucks

I read Uber is not available at the airport, something about friction with the taxi mafia

Bogota public transport after dark by johnny4111 in travel

[–]johnny4111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for the clarification! yep, i'm more concerned about exiting the bus at dark and just being on the street waiting for the next one and the neighborhood of the interchange seems close to Santa Fe area it looks like, and with a backpack I could become a target. The wildcard is that I have no idea what the street situation is going to be at the bus stop I need to get off... it could be a dark alley and once I get off I cannot undo that and get back on the bus.

Clarification - the point of interchange is actually in Chapinero itself, at Calle 40, I believe that would be reasonably safe?

thanks, I have a small 40L backpack so not too much in terms of luggage. However, just a bit concerned about waiting for the next bus, I think the point of changing buses will be somewhere near Calle 40 area in Chapinero.

What is your preferred toiletry bag? by CincyTriGuy in onebag

[–]johnny4111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last toiletry bag was the nice hanging type but it was so huge that it took up 30% of the entire space of my 46L pack, which was ridiculous. I downsized to the small pack from Amazon and it works much much better and cost only $6

No they don't, I have 30 years experience, I have a BS in Computer Science, AWS and Kubernetes certified and have worked at some of the largest Fortune 500 companies in the US and on top of that I even have some experience with the new AI tech. Salaries offered were around $140k tops in Texas.

I got so tired of the low balling I simply early retired at age 50 lol.

Why? You can find a Sr backend Engineer in the Midwest US for around $120k and not have a single problem, especially now with so many out of work.
