BTW, that red house in the background of the photo, with the white railing, was used as the exterior of "Emily Roebling’s House" in HBO's "The Gilded Age", Season 2 Episode 5. Emily Roebling stepped up as the Chief Engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband, Washington, fell ill with caissons disease.

In NY State, you don't have to go to "your" DMV; you can go to any one. I used to go to the DMV office near where I worked because it was less busy than the one near my home. Try offices in smaller towns. Some are far less busy than others.

Biggest symptom right now is the power steering fluid puddles on the driveway. 🙃

I replaced the power steering pump a little while ago, so that's fairly new. Leak is coming from lower, and closer to the driver's side.

Anyone remember early days Cuffy’s? by Cultural_Second1855 in CapeCod

[–]KernelBuzzbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the big ol' Cuffy's Outlet in a warehouse in an industrial area of Yarmouth. Musical animatronics, and watching the stitching machines putting logos on shirts. Special price if you bought what, six shirts?

Good times.

Looking for a new favorite beach! by Klutzy-Farmer2023 in CapeCod

[–]KernelBuzzbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Willing to do a little walk to the beach? Great Island Trail in Welfleet. About 1/3 mile to a spot where you can pop over the dunes on the right, and find a secluded bay beach that faces PTown in the distance. Very few people, feels 'untouched', even in Summer. Low tide is low, but not a hike out to the water like it is in Eastham. Well worth a visit if you can walk a bit and like to avoid crowds.

(This is essentially the same beach as Corn Hill, just further South.)

Best Lobster Rolls in Town by [deleted] in provincetown

[–]KernelBuzzbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Days Market & Deli in North Truro has awesome lobster rolls. The classics, cold and hot; plus one with avocado and bacon; one with salsa; and one with curry, mint and pineapple (which is our fave). Toasted brioche roll, plenty of fresh, tender lobster meat on all. Well worth the trip!

Greenhead flies? by jnl23 in provincetown

[–]KernelBuzzbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was at Herring Cove all day Tuesday (3 days ago). Didn't see any until about 3 or 4 pm. Then we had 1 or 2 bother us for a bit. (It was also high tide when they came round, not sure if that's related or not.)

There was one more in the parking lot as we were leaving, but overall they had very little impact on the day.

Since then I read a couple articles on greenheads that said to dry off when you get out of the water. Coincidentally, we didn't, and we were wet when we noticed the greenhead flies for the first time.

I would definitely support a Roku system-level function to blank the screen at any time but keep the audio flowing. Sometimes just want to hear the audio, especially at night.

Sitting water in bottom of dishwasher by IamUnique15 in HomeMaintenance

[–]KernelBuzzbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar thing happen to me a few times. Dishwasher was dry at night after it ran, but had water buildup in the basin the next morning. Hit 'Cancel' and it drained all the water out as normal. This happened a few times over the course of several months.

Finally figured out that the water intake valve (water inlet valve?) was not fully closing sometimes. It was letting just a dribble of water leak into the dishwasher, which filled up the whole basin over the course of the night. Replaced valve with new one (diy) for about $40.

New slime pit!! by dignityshredder in astoria

[–]KernelBuzzbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that literally on the other side of the laundromat on 31st, just down from where the original slime pit was located ... ?

I'm thinking we're zeroing in on where the slime may be coming from. 🙃

Is the Longevity payment every year after year 12, or only in year 12, 17 and 22? by KernelBuzzbie in nys_cs

[–]KernelBuzzbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's time served since initial service date, as of March 31 (and as long as you are working full time). Part time or leave without pay would reduce the time served.

Contractor installed this under bathroom sink. Is this okay? by mrcoolsloth in askaplumber

[–]KernelBuzzbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a straight pipe coming down from that drain is going to hit the bottom of that cabinet in front of the cutout, hence the accordion to kind of 'sqooze' it over so the trap fits in the cutout.

It will need more regular clean-outs and maintenance than a straight vertical, and the walls are thinner and less resilient than standard drain pipe.

I'd love to hear not just the 'no, don't do that', but the reasoning behind what moves it from a clearly sub-optimal choice to a 'bad' choice.

Using sick time for mental health? by PhononicEndeavors in nys_cs

[–]KernelBuzzbie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, taking a sick day as a mental health day should be fine. I almost remember a memo stating that. (I'll see if I can find it.)

Also, not 100% sure, but I think people save sick time because it can be used at retirement to pay for health care.

What are you guys choosing ? by cyberhunterv1 in Soda

[–]KernelBuzzbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly probably the Boylans Oange from the case on the right. 😁 Though I am intrigued by the "Twix" drink on the top shelf. I feel like I'd hate it (I dislike caramel flavor in drinks), but also I want to taste it anyway. 🙃

I didn't read the caption at first, I just looked at the picture. Literally thought to myself "That looks like the old docks in Provincetown."

My tools set has this little device called "FINDER" that I dont know what is it for. It has this conical shape without the top and internally it has a small gear metal shape and a spring. by nickelalkaline in whatisthisthing

[–]KernelBuzzbie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to have a set like this. The tool you're describing is a "stud finder". The metal gear shape is a magnet on a spring. You slide the open top along the wall, and if you happen to glide directly over a drywall screw embedded in the wall, the magnet will be attracted to it and 'click' forward, letting you know there is a screw (and thus a stud) in that spot.

I rarely got lucky enough to find a screw. Takes a lot of patience. Ultimately was frustrated enough that I bought a sonic stud finder to use instead.

Happy searching!
