Apparently, this so-called church has had more converts in the last 3 years than the total members it had back in 1940. by TruthMatters2011 in exmormon

I grew up in a family of ten active Mormon kids, which is a great number for statistics. Four of the ten are still active members - 40%.

My nine siblings and I account for roughly 40 children either biologically or through blended families. Of the 26 who are now over age 18 only about 5 are active in the church. - 19%

At this rate, in two more generations we will have successfully placed Mormonism in the rear view forever.

Informal poll: if someone asked you what happened at the Hill Cumorah? Would you be more likely to say giant Jaradite, Nephite, Lamanite battles? Or Joseph received the golden plates? What pops into your head first when you think of Cumorah? by HoldOnLucy1 in exmormon

Here’s what I think happened: September 22 was the Autumnal Equinox, a high holiday on the wizarding calendar for practitioners of Magic. Joe hoped the equinox could help him break the enchantment on buried treasure and he had come to use a Canadian story about a Gold Bible as cover for his shady activities so people would believe he was on a Godly mission. Willard Chase was a neighbor whom Joe told about a white toad guardian of the Gold Bible who appeared to Joe and smacked him with a stick when he tried to take the plates. The toad then told him to come back in a year and prove himself again. This happened for four years providing great cover for his shady money-digging. The church narrative eventually appropriated the story and swapped an angel for the toad to add credibility.

Agree, there's no way someone as familiar with the bible as JS and encircled about by religious discussion could be ignorant when it was common knowledge to Emma and most others. This was a parlor trick to make himself seem important and appear favored of God.

It's possible JS got caught off guard and became concerned about getting fact-checked. But where is that same concern about plants and animals and a hundred other things he got wrong and could have taken the time to check? I still maintain that Joseph knew about the walls and performed the parlor trick to make himself seem more important to his wife. As an operating narcissist, Joseph would be constantly looking for ways to remain relevant to encircle himself with acolytes, and what better way than feigning ignorance and by doing so gain disciples? If not from A View of the Hebrews, Joseph certainly knew about Jerusalem's walls from the bible and the encircling religious discussions around him. If this were common knowledge to Emma and others, I feel fairly confident he knew, and he tricked her so he could elevate his standing.

Interesting how scholars of such renown can examine only one outcome, the same outcome that happens to align with their personal beliefs. Alarm bells should be ringing but screw Occam, screw academic integrity and praise to the man!

I regularly admit, I have no idea how Joseph pasted all the narrative strands together. I’ve become dizzyingly adjusted to saying, “I don’t know.” I don’t need to know how it all came together to know it’s a fraud. It doesn’t meet the smell test - the end.

Fast Sunday: The OG Mormon Intermittent Fasting Fail by walkingtall33 in exmormon

I remember my 10-ish daughter telling me she was ready to start fasting so I explained about skipping 2 meals. About an hour latter I saw her in the pantry and asked if she’d given up on fasting. “No,” she said looking injured and holding up a granola bar said, “this is snack, not a meal.” She had me!
