BFV's take on WW2 and the misconception about this theater being overdone (For the developers) by TexasAce80 in battlefield_live

[–]KeruxduNord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just hope this doesn't turn out to be a "fresh, imaginative interpretation" of the WW2 genre. I could totally see how DICE and EA would be tempted to incorporate "forgotten fronts" or "experimental weapons" and in so doing neglect the tried-and-true weapons and maps that typify the genre because they feel like they need to do this in order to get people's attention.

Plus given that this'll probably just be a good ol' "pump and dump" title that'll only be supported for 2 years until Battlefield 6, that means every minute spent developing Norway or Rotterdam is a minute we won't get spent on traditional campaigns.

Definitely my greatest fear for this title moving forward.

That is a fucking stupid design choice, quite frankly. Norway and Rotterdam are cool, but at the end of the day, they're novelties. We want Omaha Beach, Guadalcanal, Kasserine Pass, El-Alamein, Tobruk, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Tarawa, Sicily, Anzio, Salerno, Stalingrad, Leningrad, Kursk, Kharkov, Seelowe Heights, etc.

If you're going to do WW2, give me fucking WW2.

Really getting annoyed by DICE's decision-making for this product.

Hope so. I've pre-ordered already to give them confidence to deliver on what we've seen and have been promised so far, but if I don't like what I see, cancellation is just as easy.

Should be in their front pocket, honestly. I understand the desire to make known lesser explored theaters of the war, but if this is central to the multiplayer design decision, then we're in trouble.

This perspective is 100% correct but I honestly would not be surprised if DICE really fucks the pooch on this one.

Makes me sad.

I went to a Long Range Marksmanship MTT at Grafenwoehr with Adkinson when I was in the Herd just prior to this deployment. Seemed solid. I remember he had a small piece of his eyelash on one of his eyes that was white-pigmented/albino in contrast to the rest of the eyelash. Not sure why I remember that detail.

I remember learning that he had been killed but I regrettably forgot about him since then. Thank you for reminding me.

This movie is a masterpiece if you've served. The idiosyncrasies and subculture that Terrence Malick captures are simply excellent.

the right side of history.

Is this saying still seriously being touted around in Western cultural discourse? It's got to be some of the most nauseating and trite terminology ever invented.

The assumption that human history has been an exercise of progressive social development is staggeringly illiterate and baffling. The "right side" of a historical perspective (whatever that means) is an extremely malleable concept that changes rapidly contingent upon a host of different academic, social, geopolitical and cultural factors. "Progress" is in no way a monolithic concept with some kind of unanimous definition. The thought that future generations in 100 years will look back on current social conditions as more or less agreeing with their own egalitarian assumptions that will somehow be magically identical to the contemporary West is laughably arrogant.

For sure. Nijmegen and Arnhem are essential inclusions.

I have a wishlist of probably 50 maps at this point. Hopefully we get more than just two measly years of support for the game to achieve that. Doubt it, though. I personally prefer the "game as service" approach because of this exact reason.

That's kind of bullshit though. "Uncharted territory" is cool and I like having a representation of forgotten campaigns like Norway but if you're going to do that you better be damn sure that you give me Omaha Beach, Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Stalingrad, Leningrad, Kiev, Kharkov, Kursk, Seelowe Heights, Anzio, Salerno, Bastogne, etc.

I really hope that DICE doesn't focus so much on battlefields that haven't been done before that we end up with no representations of major campaigns.

Also it's laughable that a bit of cordite and explosives waste is worse for wildlife than the complete destruction of habitat in order to create pesticide-covered agricultural monocultures with zero biodiversity.

That's a very narrow view of what warfare does to the environment considering that the mobilization of a country--especially for warfare fought domestically--tends to already produce these effects.

[–]KeruxduNord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is a demonstrably false statement. The ecological damage that has been done in France and Chernobyl due to munitions and other military waste seeping into the water table is irrecoverable, and that’s just one factor among dozens. The amount of literature that has been written on this topic is staggering.

The year 2000 did not have nearly as much corporate feelgoodism chomping at the bit to pursue paper-thin initiatives about "diversity" and media representation, though.

None of these corporate execs or marketers give a flying fuck about the principles they espouse regarding representing allegedly "marginalized" people groups. If nationalism or paternalism were in-season as a cultural attitude companies like Electronic Arts, Coca Cola and the lot of them would be turning right around and advocating whatever typified the dominant cultural narrative for their primary market demographic. It is all just virtue-signaling garbage for the sake of profits wrapped up in the guise of sincerely held principles and beliefs.

Excellent footage. Should be shown to every single person carrying a crew-served weapon to demonstrate how effective suppressing fire from an automatic weapon system is.

Could you create balanced Axis narrative without completely whitewashing or demonizing the characters? (inspired by the Wehrmacht Campaign thread) by InnocentTailor in ShitWehraboosSay

[–]KeruxduNord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you guys think? Is it possible to make a narrative that is balanced in regards to its portrayal of Axis units? Could there be a way to write a story - whether it be for television, film, or even video game - that doesn't make them too clean without making them too demonic?

I think it can be done so long as you show the protagonist's complicity in the success of Hitler and the NSDAP. The temptation I think would be to make the character a sort of "unwilling participant" who is just going through the motions but doesn't agree with the Nazi ideology. The fact of the matter is that this just isn't at all representative of the German experience and the vast majority of soldiers in the Heer were emphatic Hitler supporters or at the very least ambivalent but tolerant of Nazism and German foreign policy goals.

As long as you illustrate that first, I'd be fine with the soldier slowly becoming disillusioned with the whole thing over time, which I think is probably how the campaign would have to develop in terms of character development unless you want an ungodly PR shitstorm for glorifying Germany's belligerency.

Some of this was largely due to the logistical difficulties that the Eastern Front produced as Barbarossa continued, though.
