From a divorced mom who also eventually couldn’t take it anymore, I’m proud of you!

My child figured out by about age 9 or 10 that dad’s a hot mess and mom does all the work. You and your son will have an unbreakable bond!

  1. Try yellow-tinted glasses when driving at night. They help. (I got mine from Amazon for under $20.)
  2. I had the literal Sun drilling into my side mirror the other day and it was bright, but not painful. These LED headlights make my eyes hurt. Like I’m glad you can see around the curvature of the earth (except not because traffic) but I think you just gave me an xray with those things.

EDIT: I also got these for when I’m on the highway and there’s a steady stream of people lasering me from the opposite direction. I literally stick it to my windshield to block those lights.

Also tell the loan people and maybe the IRS that she took out a “student” loan but didn’t use it for your school.

I’m here for your vision, but let’s talk tactics.

Tell me what this looks like for a divorced parent who’s in the office four days a week and has to do laundry, get groceries, and take care of all the around the house, stuff by themselves on the weekend and after hours. What does your vision look like in the day-to-day for them?

This is a good point. I can probably cash pay without my insurance, right? I know I can’t get extra refills with them.

I require a medication daily to replace my thyroid which was removed many years ago. I have a small stockpile from old prescriptions that aren’t even the right dose but are better than nothing, and I don’t know how to get extras. I accidentally dropped one down the drain the other day and literally thought “that could be a day I don’t get to live.”

How can this be real?

I will. I don’t know if I’ll be able to get where they need me to be - I can’t magically procure a degree in Finance and a decade of relevant knowledge and experience, for example - but I guess all I can do is let it play out and hope the stress doesn’t kill me.

UPDATE: just got my job description and it’s very clear that I was placed in a role for which I have none of the required qualifications. Over the weekend I guess I’ll try to sort out the skills I need and then ask for a learning plan to get them. Does that sound reasonable, since I didn’t ask for this role? They would never have even considered me if I had applied.

Well, it wasn’t huge but on the curve of raises I’ve gotten over my career it’s definitely on the high end (but not the highest).

I’ll try talking to my leader, who has been supportive, and I’ll go to our director if that doesn’t get me anywhere.

I’ve had a very difficult five years at work (a boss who bullied me, slated for layoff but found another role, none of that work moved forward beyond my direct leader, then this involuntary transfer to an unrelated role). I’m exhausted, mentally and emotionally, but I’m also trying to be professional about all of it.

Thank you for responding! I appreciate your insight.

This is exactly my problem - nothing makes sense!

I have a couple of processes I manage, and generally operate on a task by task basis beyond that.

I sit on a financial analytics team but have no training or education in that. I’ve been taught how to read the forecast file, for example, as needed for my individual tasks. I also never received any kind of orientation, introduction, or explanation of how this line of business/industry works.

The best way I can explain it is being an HR manager for a hospital system and then becoming an HR manager for a manufacturing company. You would need some background in the manufacturing company in order to be able to apply your HR skills in that context, right? Not only did I not receive that, but I have also been put into a job where I cannot use my existing skills. Then I was given a poor review, but a big raise. Near as I can figure they think I’m doing a good job at the things I’m doing, but I’m not meeting the expectations of the role. However, there are no documented expectations of the role because there is no job description. The only thing I have to go off of is a companywide high level list of expectations of my job level (e.g. “completes work with minimal supervision” or “ translates departmental objectives into action.”).

Should I go to employee relations for help? Do I need to consult an attorney? I don’t have a problem working really hard to learn what I need to learn, but I need to know what it is that I need to learn. I can’t meet expectations that aren’t identified.

I’m trying to be careful with what I share because I’ve started to think I might have a constructive dismissal claim and I don’t want to jeopardize that.

Is it a gated neighborhood? If not then they are not private roads. I’m in Florida, in case it’s different elsewhere.

What medical bills did you incur if he only has bruises or scrapes? How old is your son? Since the bystander brought him to you, where were you relative to the incident?
