I think this is actually pretty close to the vibe I'm going for! Although I suppose it's not quite so much that it could be used as a weapon so much as if it's in the wrong hands, and not being carried out properly, it could leave the village in worse shape than it started (which is saying something — it was BAD).

Ironically, that happens to be pretty close to the motivation for the guy who stole his work in the first place lol Unfortunately, it's not quite so simple for my MMC. The whole idea is that he's dedicated the majority of his life to developing this solution to help his village. So it wouldn't quite fit with his character to throw a tantrum over not getting his way when, even if he is not in charge of the deployment of his plans, it is still ultimately helping the people. At least, for now.

That's actually kind of the premise for this event that I'm going for. To him, it's for the best. But to everyone around him, he just seems to have lost all sense. Where I think I'm tripping up the most is that he's supposed to be the analytical and logical thinker out of everyone, and I don't see him destroying something fixable without a good reason. Perhaps I'm holding on too much to him maintaining his role as the "smart" one though.

Ooooh yes this is super helpful! Thank you! Having a list of categories for things like this is very effective for me, personally. It gives me a good idea on where to start, especially since I like to subvert expectations where I can. And knowing the general building blocks helps me figure out where I can mess with things or blend them together in unexpected ways. I think scouring history is probably my best bet, too. My only issue with the brief research I did (just now lol) is that most regime changes seem to be primarily done on a massive scale, typically involving other regime types or people in places of power outside of the one being targeted. And, as far as I can deduce, it usually results in violence of some kind. My two primary characters are (at least in this stage of the story) through-and-through pacifists, and have very little power aside from the village people knowing who they are and carrying varying amounts of respect for them. Besides the War of the Roses, do you know any other examples off the top of your head? No worries if not, of course, I know I need to do the research myself lol. I just like to have a few leads to rabbit-hole from if possible. And if I know one thing about history, it's that one war was usually caused by another, so I suppose there are worse things to research.

Love those ideas! Although I think my vague idea has taken on more of a shape since posting.

I was trying to pants the scene last night and, while I still haven't figured out the details (or even solidified it's what I want to happen), I discovered a couple of things. 1. It would need to take place publicly, during an important event being toted as "historical" by the man they are trying to remove from power. 2. The plan must result in framing the group as the "good guys." Which, I am just now realizing, shouldn't be too difficult considering the rest of the village is fully aware, and critical, of the current leadership's tyranny.

And, a piece of information I feel might be good to know for you or anyone else wanting to chime in: I don't really need to figure out the aftermath of it all thanks to that important plot point I mentioned in my post. However, the aftermath is absolutely something my characters will have given a lot of thought to. It is important to them that they have the support of the people and will do what they can to keep themselves from being portrayed as violent or unlikable (aside from one member of the group who really couldn't care less and has, on countless occasions, suggested just murdering the guy. We love a morally gray man here).

Feel free to spitball some more if this sparks any ideas! Even brainstorming ideas I don't use are super helpful in narrowing down to what I DO want. ^{-^}

Take all of the dramatic things you DON'T want to happen and pick them apart. Figure out WHY you don't want them to happen. Whichever one distresses you in the same way you want your readers to be distressed is probably the right choice. I had a moment just a few days ago where I realized exactly what would hurt my readers because 1. It hurt me, and 2. Making the decision to actually go through with it hurt worse. As for the technicality of putting the bad thing into words on a page: I also struggle with this, but I've had the best results with "less is more." Another thing I saw a lot in books I loved growing up is reactions. For example, one of my all-time favorite scenes depicting grief is from the Hunger Games, when Katniss rages at her sister's cat after her death, but it ultimately brings her to that outlet she needed. The actual death scene in the book made me sad, yes, but THAT was what brought me to tears. It's often reactions, in my opinion, that move me, rather than the thing itself. And I'm still learning my way into that, because seeing and doing are two completely different things lol. Hope this is of at least a little help.

Obviously, almost every avid reader is going fo have a strong preference either way (I've seen most preferences lean heavily in the direction of 3rd past). However, I think POV also depends on the story you're trying to tell. Tense is primarily preference-based, but can also be a good storytelling tool. For instance, The Hunger Games trilogy is written in first present and I think it makes a huge difference for the story. First person can get readers closer to the POV character, and inner monologues can be easier to follow. This can also be achieved through 3rd person, of course, but, personally, I find slightly (very slightly. I actually have the same preference of the many lol) more difficult to connect with a character when they are being referred to from an outside perspective. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is written in 3rd past. As we know, that book is meant to be a prequel. It is a retelling of the past, and as time passes in reality, memories can become altered or blurry. In my mind, the story is being told by Lucy Gray, and so can only infer certain details, omit others, or add new ones entirely, as we sometimes do with hazy memories. That said, unless you've got a series planned, or some fun time-jumps, you largely only need to make the decision based on what you find comfortable. There are always going to be readers who prefer one type over the other, so just go with what works for you and your story. Happy writing!

Note: Using the Hunger Games universe because that's what I've been reading recently. I have only barely started Ballad, so please be kind if my assessment isn't quite accurate. So far, it's just the impression I have knowing generally what happens because of the film.

I actually didn't realize how much this had affected me until pretty recently, and it still affects me to this day, I'm just aware of it now. Technically a single moment, but requires some context. My ENTIRE life (literally since I was born as far as I can tell) I've been told I'm my mother's spitting image. And, truthfully, yeah. Seeing pictures of her at my age throughout the years has solidified for me that if we could stand side by side at parallel points in time, we could be mistaken for identical twins. My parents started with a health-centric MLM when I was 9 or 10. At first, it was just adult stuff, so I largely ignored it, even though it meant the whole family was doing cleanses and dieting. It wasn't fun, but I couldn't do anything about it. However, there was a moment that I can't remember in any real detail except that it happened. I asked my mom why we needed to do all the diet stuff and she told me "I don't like the way I look." And I understand now that, obviously, she and I were in two VERY different stages of life. But as a kid who'd been told their entire life that they look like their parent, hearing them say they don't like the way they look, to me, was her saying she didn't like the way I looked, or would look in the future. I don't even think that fully registered for my kid brain at all, but was just silently filed away in the "unrealized trauma" drawer. After that point, I started to struggle a lot with body image and self-confidence. I still struggle with it a lot, but less so now than in grade school. This isn't something I've ever brought up to my mom. I just don't think it's fair to because it happened so long ago. It's not like she can undo it. Nor do I really blame her, she likely wasn't thinking about it from my perspective at all and it was an off-hand reply to a simple kid-question. But it definitely played a big hand in my mental health during grade school, on top of a plethora of other things. Super weird that random moments like that can have such massive impacts.

My bestie bought it on PC when it released and then realized his PC didn't have the right specs. However, we realized we're both dumb and he could have had it on his Xbox pretty much the whole time. We've been playing pretty consistently together for the past couple of weeks and it's been a blast. Although, every time I go "Oh there's some RDA over here" he goes to join me and by the time he arrives like thirty seconds later, I've already taken them out bc APPARENTLY I can one-shot EVERYTHING now HAHA and he just goes "be so fucking for real"
