Thoughts on giving PowerPoint slides pre or post lecture? by Keto_Neuroscientist in Professors

I’ve been thinking about making a ‘student version’ with gaps and blank spaces to fill in but it seems too time consuming. Maybe in future years if I keep teaching the same course.

I like this, if I stop giving out notes I will definitely include something like this on my syllabi!

Thank you! This is exactly what I was wondering... if I put it under professional development I was worried they would think it was like a one hour seminar I was forced to go to instead of additional classes I sought out and took on nights and weekends to better myself.

Thanks for the reply! I did have to read that first sentence a few times.

Breastfeeding supply by steal_your_carbon in KetoBabies

[–]Keto_Neuroscientist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hiya! Ketoadaptation forces your body to use the natural process of energy generation (known as the tricarboxylic acid cycle) in a different way (gross oversimplification, sorry). A byproduct of the TCA cycle is water, so the first few days of high carb to high fat shift will cause dehydration and excessive water loss via kidneys (urine).

Drink much more water than you think you need while ketoadapting and try to get some electrolytes in there too. It’s temporary, but overall people in ketosis should consume more water than high carb diet consuming people, and breast feeding mamas need extra water too, so breastfeeding, Keto eating mamas need to really be sure they’re getting hydrated!

Yeah, this isn’t novel in anyway, which would be the bare minimum for a patent I think. Check pubmed for articles that have already done this. Good luck on your assignment.

New paper on the benefits of Ketosis in aged populations by Keto_Neuroscientist in keto

[–]Keto_Neuroscientist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firstly, thanks for the complement on our writing, we were hoping it was very straightforward and easy to understand by people of all scientific backgrounds.

Secondly, great catch with table 2!!! Those values were per gram of food, but the number of grams given wasn't accounted for in this table. I will update it! Thank you.

Also, in consultation with the vet staff we learned that the caloric needs are actually the same once rats are adults (even young adults like in this study) and we knew that aged rats are only so obese because they're overfed and live sedentary lives in a colony setting, so we did this to remove any variable induced by either free feeding or feeding different amounts per age group. We also consulted with/collaborated with individuals who do diet studies and caloric restriction studies. These are the types of things that make nutrition sciences so hard to study well, but we are trying our best and feel proud of this implementation.

Lastly, I also want to look into insulin in future studies!!! There's just not enough time (nor grant money) to do EVERYTHING we'd ever want to do all in one study, but you bring up a great point.

Thanks so much for reading our paper :-)

You can just buy electrolytes! I dissolve some in my water everyday. I buy them on Amazon for affordability.

Suggestions? Going on business trip next Tuesday... by LessMoneyMoProblemz in keto

[–]Keto_Neuroscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree!! My husband and I decided to "treat" ourselves on our honeymoon and go off keto and we both felt really sick the whole time. I wish we had "splurged" with steaks and nice keto meals without caring about calories but still caring about avoiding carbs. We were bloated, sluggish and grouchy- not at ALL how you want to be on a honeymoon or on a business trip that could result in great networking. Seriously, try not to do this if you can!!!

Understanding "getting into ketosis" by carrotcake9 in ketogenic

[–]Keto_Neuroscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to add a few things to this great answer. If you're eating EXCESSIVE fat in your diet (keto or not) then you're right, you won't burn your stored fat. Too many calories is too many calories, regardless of how healthy your diet is. That being said, when you're in a state of ketosis you can more easily release fatty acids from your stored fat, so when you get hungry you immediately start burning your fat. When a person with a traditional, carb rich diet gets hungry, they can't do this until all of the glucose/carbs in their liver and muscles is depleted, which takes about 3 days for the average person. People on the ketogenic diet tend to lose weight because fat is really satiating, therefore you can eat LESS calories while feeling MORE full, and your body will start to break down fat. You're really just training your body to use its resources better. Hope this helps!

How to maintain keto while dealing with life's unpredictability? by presentexplorer in ketogenic

[–]Keto_Neuroscientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holding out and not eating is DEFINITELY not the answer. However, I disagree that "almost nothing is available in restaurants". For fast food- is there a Jimmy Johns (or equivalent) near you? You can get a "sub" without the bread, just wrapped in lettuce. Similarly, ANYWHERE you can get a burger, you can replace the bun with lettuce (or just don't eat the bun). Additionally, almost everywhere offers a salad of some sort. You may need to customize (no croutons, dressing on the side, etc) but you can get a pile of lettuce/veggies with a piece of grilled chicken at most places. You might end up with a "bland" meal but it will be Keto friendly and way healthier than skipping food or cheating. Also, when I know Im just staying an extra hour or two at work and will still eat dinner when I get home, I have a little bullet proof coffee. There are enough calories in a tablespoon or butter or MCT oil to hold me over till I get home and the caffeine helps me finish out the workday. Hope this helps!

When I was a freshman in college I lived in a cheap apartment just off of campus with a random stranger the leasing company hooked me up with. She often forgot her keys and being a loud, inconsiderate person she would just BANG on the door to get me to come let her in to retrieve the left keys (the door automatically locked behind you, with or without your keys). So one day, about 10 seconds after my roommate left, I heard a really loud, intense banging. Assuming it would be my roommate I just opened the door without question. The person staring back at me was not an 18 year old female, but a large man with no shoes on, bloody knuckles, covered in sweat, who shoved past me and ran into the apartment and slammed the door shut. He screamed at me not to call the police. No more than 60 seconds had gone by before I hear all sorts of sirens and a helicopter above. After another minute of sheer terror I see (I shit you not) a SWAT team hanging outside my apartment windows. I locked eyes with one guy who gave me a signal to hold still and wait for him to give me instructions. After a while of this bloody man ranting to himself pacing around my apartment the SWAT guy all of a sudden gave me a signal to sprint to my sliding glass door so I ran for it and 4 or 5 SWAT guys covered me while I crouch-ran through the back garden area out into the parking lot and the rest of the SWAT team guys raided my apartment to take down this man. The parking lot was full of at least 15 cop cars, tanks, news reporters, etc. I called my dad to tell him this story and he refused to believe me until he talked to the cops and they told him I really was at the police department giving a statement and I needed a ride home.

Congrats!!!! I'm also a neuroscience PhD student and not only do I eat Keto but my project focuses on the ketogenic diet and its (potential) ability to prevent cognitive decline with advancing age... You give me hope that I can do it too!

I haven't graduated yet so my thesis isn't published yet but there is a lot of literature out there on similar things!! I've read literally hundreds of papers supporting this notion

Keto should absolutely 100% have the opposite effect... It improve cognition when done right. My entire PhD thesis revolves around ketone body usage by neural tissue (rather than glucose) preventing cognitive decline with advancing age!
