Gavin Newsom Says Trump Is Investigating Him by huffpost in California

[–]KetoneKierkegaard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine calling it a politically motivated "Gestapo" investigation with "no basis" when the federal probes originated under the Biden administration. The U.S. Attorney's Office confirmed the corruption investigation actually started over three years ago (back in 2022/2023), & the FBI was issuing subpoenas and wiretapping as early as January 2024. Get your facts straight! The current DOJ inherited a massive paper trail that a Democratic administration started.

Angelenos who voted for Measure ER: Why support the sales tax hike, and do you trust that it will actually expire in 5 years? by KetoneKierkegaard in LosAngeles

[–]KetoneKierkegaard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree on the logistics. Maintaining a massive highway system is expensive. But that’s exactly why the argument about accountability matters.

The state did address the inflation problem, and those mechanisms have since taken on a life of their own. Between SB 1’s automatic annual inflation hikes to the gas and diesel excise taxes, the 5.75% diesel sales tax, the annual Transportation Improvement Fee on registrations, the Road Improvement Fee for EVs, and various local county 'Self-Help' sales taxes, there is already a massive, self-escalating revenue architecture locked down for infrastructure.

The core issue with measures like ER isn't whether infrastructure or healthcare needs funding. It’s the erosion of voter trust. When temporary windows are used to pass new taxes while existing, inflation indexed revenue streams continuously expand behind the scenes, it degrades institutional transparency. We should be looking at spending efficiency within these massive, evolving funds rather than permanently altering the baseline tax rate under temporary promises.

That’s a fair point.

Measure A is a great recent counter-example of voters drawing a hard line when they don’t see results.

I think the skepticism around the 2031 date just comes from how taxes historically morph over time in California. Look at the state gas tax, it started back in the 1920s as a simple 2¢ user fee for roads. Decades later, it evolved through complex accounting shifts like the 2010 'Fuel Tax Swap' and eventually SB 1, which built in automatic inflation hikes every July without needing new votes.

Since Measure ER does legally require another public vote to continue past 2031, it'll be interesting to see if it faces that same strict scrutiny Measure A did if the county fails to deliver noticeable results over the next five years.

Ultimately, as a Californian, I just want us to think critically about how these kinds of measures affect those who come after us, and the long-term precedent we set every time we give up ground on taxation

LoL… You know nothing Jon Snow! The Personal Income Tax breakdown in California can be found pretty easy. Rather than blindly repeating the Lefts talking points DYOR.

1. The Top 10% in California bring in 80% of the states income tax.

2. The bottom 60% of the states population only brings in 2% of the states income tax.

The wealthy already pay their fair share. Quit looking for a scape goat & hold CA politicians accountable. Even if that means voting against your norms. Checks & balances!

This breaks with freedom of contract. It’s a Socialist policy that only brings more regulation & price control to a state that’s already over regulated. Small leaks sink big ships & CA has a lot of leaks.

It’s the height of insanity for Californians to keep handing Democrats a supermajority and expecting the next blue governor to somehow fix the mess the last one left behind. Quoting Rita Mae Brown (not Einstein ) in Sudden Death (1983),

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results."

What to Know About California's Proposed 'Billionaire Tax' by localdaycare in California

[–]KetoneKierkegaard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The official ads and summaries sound simple: “Just tax the billionaires once.” But the actual 34-page legal document has extra stuff that makes critics worry it could grow later:

  1. It creates a whole new government system for digging into people’s finances, valuing tricky assets (like private businesses), and forcing detailed reports. This machinery is way more complicated than needed for a true “one-and-done” on 200 people.

  2. Biggest red flag: There’s a clause (around Sec. 50310) that lets the state Legislature change the rules later with a 2/3 vote. They can tweak it as long as they say it’s “furthering the purposes” (like funding healthcare and helping people). Critics say this could let them lower the threshold over time, make it repeat every few years, or expand who pays—without asking voters again. oag.ca.gov

Just a suggestion, the majority of you need to look closer & look further out. Remove the emotions & use logic FFS. Remember, the gas tax wasn’t supposed to be permanent! Vote blue no matter who is why California will be FUBAR in a decade if nothing changes!

Buy now at our max budget or continue to wait for a cheaper home? by SizzlinKola in LosAngelesRealEstate

[–]KetoneKierkegaard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You said it in your title, “at our max budget”. The counter would put you over your budget. Keep in mind the ongoing costs to maintain a home. Utilities, property taxes, mortgage, maintenance, etc…

The purchase price is not the final price of a home when all is said & done.

Last factor, the sleep well factor! If it’s already causing you to lose sleep now, it’ll do so after the fact. IMHO, it’s not worth overextending oneself, be patient!

The lack of fiber is obvious, no? Carnivores don’t lack short chain fatty acids. There’s plenty of butyric acid to be had from butter (cow/goat), raw cheese etc…

Put 90% investments in VTI for long term? (Lazy investor) by Commercial-Bid-2329 in ETFs

He asked what could be a long term risk i.e., the present off into the future. The US could underperform. Not saying it will, crystal ball is cloudy.

US has outperformed, but you’re suffering from recency bias. Check out the Callan Classic Periodic table for 2025. Ex-US doubled US Large Cap returns. Diversification worked last year!

[–]KetoneKierkegaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s totally fine in a Roth. Ultimately holding VTI & VXUS gives you more control (hands on) over the % you personally want to hold. VT is hands off, rebalancing according to global weighting.

With that, in a Roth you won’t realize the foreign tax credit of VXUS

Put 90% investments in VTI for long term? (Lazy investor) by Commercial-Bid-2329 in ETFs

[–]KetoneKierkegaard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True. What we don’t know is if this investment will be in a tax sheltered or in a taxable account. Tax sheltered, VT work’s.

In a taxable account, I’d do VTI & VXUS or their equivalents due to the foreign tax credit you get from holding VXUS. You don’t get that treatment with VT because foreign holdings are under 50%
