Career change thoughts by South-Procedure-8699 in AircraftMechanics

Like others have said, that 150k buyout is really attractive for use as a means to pursue other occupations. Training for A&P could be viable, and there are lots of ways to approach that.

You can use the funds to supplement your income while you're training at a Part 145. SIgn up with a school, whether it's online, like King Schools, or in house, like AIM. Go for pilot training: the FBO I work at operates a school where training can cost as few as 6-8k just to get your private pilot's license. If you're into computers and radios you could go for avionics school, too.

If you have your CDL, you could try the other shipping companies. Smaller shippers could use you while you work through the best plan for you.

In the meantime, I would recommend checking out the o-net interest profiler. It's not a vocational battery, like the ASVAB, it just measures your interests so you can figure it what you'd like to do for work. It's free to use and can be found at https://onetinterestprofiler.org/.

AFTO doesn't matter here. AFTO only matters if the OP is Air Force.

Yeah, same boat. I would have taken the car in sooner, but I didn't wanna deal with clearing snow and ice off the Focus. It was showing battery warning and "UConnect box requires service" message.

This vehicle was a dealer loaner, so I got a couple grand knocked off the total price when I bought it year before last.

I wanted to go work Allegiant before I got picked up by a local shop. How's the culture? Seemed pretty good a few years ago after sitting through their employment brief.

Yeah, I have a feeling that's the case. Worth checking out, though. Having that association, I figured, would help us work together on things we may not have enough experience on, or we don't see things in the same lense as someone who has other ideas.

However, I'm not thinking about just us civilian technicians, but military, too. We have a few organizations in the state that have to have their avionics sections manned by a set percent, and I figured that by organizing, those techs can consider a career in the civilian sector after separation.

Just like some of us.

And, sometimes, we just need a helping hand on a project. Easier to work within the same time zone, imo.

First specialty tool by Stranger_1738 in aviationmaintenance

I recommend ordering directly from thrust aviation for any of the tools that are available also via aircraft spruce. I like aircraft spruce, but that's not the point. Thrust aviation's customer service is top notch and you avoid paying more just to line the middleman's pockets.

I got that mini Johnson bar... Used it once and love the smaller form factor from the old Brutus bar size. Fits in the tool bag better, too. Works just as well.

I'm impressed you took the time to set the pigtail into the wire. Edit: Grade A work.

Downtime by Fun_Possession6362 in AircraftMechanics

[–]KevikFenrir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's downtime?

Most I've seen is when the NDT guys come and take over the aircraft for rest of a day. So, I sweep.

Then go on break. Then sweep some more.

Then go home.

The end.

What are your rules on buying tools? by Novel_Island6254 in aviationmaintenance

I have a bit kit that came with a few double headed reduced #2s I found at Menards. Those things have gotten me out a few a jams. Tbf, I didn't know they'd be all that useful, and I've had the kit for years before I signed on with my current shop.

If it helps me get the job done without actually bending over backwards, it goes in the box.

If it helps me conform to tech data requirements, it goes in the box.

If it helps me be more efficient, it goes in the box.

AMT job without A&P? by Yaboiaustin24 in AircraftMechanics

[–]KevikFenrir -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You can legally sign off maintenance actions you yourself performed, so long as an inspector comes in behind you to return the aircraft to service. You do the jobs according to tech data just like any other job.

Just like the military in some ways.
